The papers consist of correspondence and writings which document Abraham Robinson's professional life and work. Draft and printed copies of Robinson's books and papers comprise the bulk of the papers. Student memorabilia, diaries, and biographical material are also included in the papers.

Diary kept by Albert Dodd while at Yale College (1836-1837) describing his relations with men and women, a manuscript of his poetry (with printed engravings of Hoboken and Manhattanville), and three letters to his family from Bloomington, Illinois (1841-1844) where he had gone to practice law. The letters describe modes of travel, hunting, the habits of wolves, and conditions of health and hygiene in the area. Included also is Dodd's obituary from the Hartford Daily Times, June 1844.

Personal and professional papers, notebooks, and photographs of Albert E. Waugh, Professor and administrator at the University of Connecticut from 1924 until his retirement in 1965. Materials document his career, political activities, research interests and retirement.

Correspondence and writings of Albert Jay Nock, author and editor. Also included are writings and correspondence about Nock (mainly materials collected by Robert Crunden for his book on Nock, The Mind and Art of Albert Jay Nock, Chicago, 1964), and materials concerning Ruth Robinson, a close friend of Nock; in fact, the larger part of the collection consists of correspondence between Nock and Miss Robinson. Important correspondents include H. L. Mencken, Ellery Sedgwick, Brand Whitlock, Newton D. Baker, Jacques Barzun, Lewis Mumford, and John Dos Passos.

Diaries of Albert Lemuel Judd, Katharine Wells Judd, Ethel Gardiner Judd and notes from the diaries of Albert Dunham Judd, members of a New Britain, Connecticut family involved in manufacturing and active in community affairs. The papers also include five memo books and three miscellaneous documents.

Correspondence, diaries, bills, receipts, legal papers, genealogical notes, and miscellanea concerning the Allis family of New Haven, Connecticut, and members of the Colton, Stockbridge, and Foote families, 1840-1895.

The papers consist of a journal, clippings, a printed article and other items of A. B. Brown, a physician. The journal and clippings record Brown's experiences as a member of the Frederick A. Cook expedition to the Arctic in 1894, while the article and a letter are concerned with the work of the Yale Mission in New Haven.

The papers consist of correspondence, legal papers, diaries, estate records, account books, notebooks, deeds, and miscellanea of the Alsop family of Middletown, Connecticut. Several generations of family members are represented in the papers including: Joseph Wright Alsop (1772-1844), Joseph Wright Alsop (1804-1878), Joseph Wright Alsop (1838-1891), Joseph Wright Alsop (1876-1953), Mary Alsop Oliver Alsop (1815-1893), Richard Alsop (1726-1776), Richard Alsop (1789-1842), Charles Richard Alsop (1802-1865), and John De Koven Alsop (1879-1926). Family mercantile interests in Connecticut and related operations in Bolivia, Chile, and Peru are documented. Files relating to a legal case involving the firm of Alsop & Company, the United States government, and the governments of Bolivia and Chile (1865-1914) are included. The personal papers of several family members are also arranged in the papers.

Sermons, speeches, diaries, and commonplace books of Amos Sheffield Chesebrough and four letters from Joseph Hopkins Twichell. The diaries were kept during a trip to Europe in 1857 in which Cheesebrough visited London, Heidelberg and other German cities. The sermons, which make up the major portion of the papers, span the period when he was pastor in churches in Chester, Glastonbury, Vernon and Durham, Connecticut.

Diaries, correspondence, writings, clippings and approximately fifty photographs of family and friends of Andrew Watt Warden. Warden's correspondence with family and friends centers on his interest in social issues and on their responses to both world wars, particularly World War II.

The papers consist of correspondence, diaries, writings, memorabilia and photographs. The correspondence (1897-1964) which includes family, friends and political associates documents Walling's involvement in political causes. The letters also reveal Anna Walling's feelings on personal matters, social questions and her reactions to meetings with prominent persons both in the United States and abroad. Her trip to Russia (ca. 1905-1907) with William English Walling where they toured the provinces and met many literary and political figures is described in her letters home. Important personal correspondents are Melville Anderson, Gelette Burgess, Harry Cowell, Hutchins Hapgood, Ray Nash, Charles Edward Russell, Katherine Maryson, Jane Roulson, James Graham Phelps Stokes, Rose Pastor Stokes, Upton Sinclair and Gaylord Wilshire. There are also a number of letters from prominent political and literary figures of the period, among them Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, Zona Gale, Arnold Genthe, Jesse Jackson, Vida Scudder, Irving Stone, Henrietta Szold, Norman Thomas and Rabindranath Tagore. Despite her prolonged love affair with Jack London only a few copies of his letters are in the correspondence, (She gave many of his letters, manuscripts, etc. to the Huntington Library.)

The papers consist of correspondence, diaries, writings, childhood, school and college materials, housekeeping and social records, reports, memoranda and correspondence from the many organizations in which Anne Morrow Lindbergh took an active interest. Also included are voluminous mail from members of her reading public and memorabilia, both objects sent by admirers and items collected by her on her travels. The death of Charles Lindbergh in 1974 is documented by mail from friends, members of the public and organizations. Anne Morrow Lindbergh's writings make up the largest part of the papers and include her diaries (1929-1972, 1982-1988), drafts of her books, working notebooks, speeches, articles and stories, and published reviews of her work. Also in the papers are printed copies of her publications. Her personal correspondence with friends and family runs over many years. Correspondence with friends includes letters exchanged with Anne Carrel, Harry Guggenheim, Corliss Lamont, Harold and Nigel Nicolson, Vita Sackville-West, Igor Sikorsky, Truman and Katherine Smith, Helen and Kurt Wolff, Jean Stafford and Mary Ellen Chase. Her family correspondence contains letters exchanged by Anne Morrow Lindbergh and members of her immediate family as well as members of the Morrow, Lindbergh and Cutter families.

The collection contains correspondence, personal and family papers, and financial records that document the life, interests, and work of the American philanthropist Annie Burr Auchincloss Lewis (1902-1959).

Correspondence, diaries, proclamations, and drafts of letters chiefly relating to the Civil War, but also including letters from the Jacksonian period. The major portion of the collection concerns the siege of Fort Sumter with letters from both Major Robert Anderson and General P.G.T. Beauregard. Included also are a diary kept by General S. Wylie Crawford during the siege and two letters from Abraham Lincoln. Other portions of the collection concern Lincoln as a political figure; the relations of Jefferson Davis and General Beauregard, with letters by both principals; letters by and about General Sherman; and letters on the controversy between Andrew Jackson and John Randolph, with letters from both.

The papers consist of nine journals documenting the military career of Arnold More Knight in India and South Africa. Also included is a volume of Sikh scripture, written in Panjabi, and captured by Knight after the Battle of Aliwal.

Twenty-one diaries, 1821-1879, of Asa Fitch, scientist and entomologist. The diaries reflect in considerable detail Fitch's life and thoughts from early adolescence through his education at the Rensselaer School in Troy, New York and the Vermont Academy of Medicine in Castleton, his career as a scientist and state entomologist in New York, and his retirement. Also included are papers and genealogical materials relating to other members of the Fitch family.

The collection includes a small amount of correspondence; a notebook including Oughterson's account of his travel to and first days in Japan in 1945; a form for examining those exposed to the atomic bomb; clippings and articles about Oughterson; obituaries including a lengthy memoir published separately by John F. Fulton and Eugene Davidson; photographs; and articles on military medicine and the atomic and H-bomb collected by Oughterson.

The Avery-Copp Papers, which span mostly from 1820 to 1930, contain correspondence, writings, printed material, electronic media, and other papers related to the lives and relationships of the Avery and Copp families and their relations, who for generations lived in and around their homestead, now the Avery-Copp House Museum, on Thames Street in Groton, Connecticut.

The papers are composed of correspondence, legal and financial papers, and memorabilia of several descendants and relatives of Samuel (1693-1740) and Elizabeth Tracey Backus of Norwich, Connecticut. Papers of Samuel Backus's grandson James, his partner Rufus Backus, and James's brother-in-law Dudley Woodbridge concern mercantile establishments, commerce, and shipping in Norwich following the Revolutionary War. There is also correspondence between several family members of this generation, as well as a diary of James's brother Elijah, which he kept while studying in New Haven (1778). Papers of James's son William Woodbridge Backus document his investments and financial dealings, genealogical interests, and philanthropic endeavors for the last fifteen years of his life.

The papers consist of correspondence, newspaper clippings of a historical and religious nature, journals, and other papers of the Bacon family. Included are sermons and writings of Leonard Bacon; papers and journals of Leonard Woolsey Bacon and Benjamin Wisner Bacon; correspondence and printed material pertaining to the affair of Delia Salter Bacon and Alexander MacWhorter, a licentiate; and correspondence about the scandal between Henry Ward Beecher and Theodore Tilton regarding Beecher's affair with Tilton's wife, Elizabeth Tilton. Additional papers include diaries of Leonard Bacon; notebooks, letterbooks, manuscripts, and printed matter concerning the Congregational Church in Connecticut; correspondence, manuscripts, printed matter, newspaper clippings, and photos of four generations of the Bacon Family; and correspondence of Leonard Woolsey Bacon.

The papers consist of family correspondence, autograph albums, diaries, notebooks, financial records, photographs and memorabilia, principally of Leonard Woolsey Bacon, a physician, and of his first wife, Emma Waleska Schneeloch. The largest part of the papers is made up of Bacon's prescription books (1892-1937) containing diagnosis, prescriptions, and name, age and occupation for each patient. Also in the papers are the financial records of his practice (1907-1919) which, together with the prescription books, make an important record of the practice of medicine in New Haven in that period. In the family correspondence is a long series of letters (1886-1892) from Leonard Bacon to Emma Schneeloch during their courtship. Much of the correspondence is made up of letters from various members of the Bacon family who were opposed to the marriage. Emma Schneeloch sang with her sister, Emilie, with a band that traveled to the West in 1891. A diary kept by Emilie of this trip is in the papers. Also included are student papers from Vassar (ca. 1917-1921) and other memorabilia kept by Emma Waleska Bacon Evans, daughter of Leonard and Emma Bacon.

A shipping firm based in New York trading with Europe, South America and various ports in the United States. The principal partner in the firm was Simeon Baldwin of New Haven. The records include account books, correspondence, papers dealing with the general business of the firm and papers dealing with the individual ships. The records for each of the 124 ships consist of bills of lading, manifests, freight lists, settlements of earnings, letters of instruction to captains, captain's accounts and other documents for each voyage. Two diaries are in the collection: Simeon Baldwin's business diary for 1821 and Charles Baldwin's diary of a voyage in the brig Duroc, 1830.

The papers detail the personal lives and professional careers of several generations and family lines of the Baldwin family. The legal, political, and business activities of family members in Connecticut, New York, and elsewhere are documented. Major topics include: family, women, law, education, Connecticut and New York politics and government, New Haven, Connecticut, and Yale University.

Scrapbooks, manuscripts, diaries. letters, and personal papers documenting the lives and careers of American humorist John Kendrick Bangs and his son, Francis Hyde Bangs.

Correspondence between family members. Includes letters between Rebekah Clegg Bateman and her husband, Thomas Bateman, her son, William Bateman, her father, Arthur Clegg, and her sister, Elizabeth Clegg Wilson; letters between Rebekah Bateman and her brothers, William and Thomas Bateman; one letter from Thomas Bateman to his son, Thomas; and letters between William Bateman and his brother, Thomas, and his father, Thomas. Many of the letters are written by and to children at school. Also included are hymns, poetry, prayers, and excerpts from sermons written down by Rebekah Clegg Bateman; and a travel diary written by her son, Thomas, about a visit to the Lake Country.

The papers consist of ninety-four family letters (1810-1853), the diaries of Sarah Robbins Battell and three of her daughters, and twenty-seven letters (1889-1894) to Robbins Battell.

Papers related to the Litchfield families of Beach, Webster, and Dickinson. In 1916, Bessie Rachel Beach (1893-1976) married Leonard Dickinson (1895-1946). The parents of Bessie were Milo D. Beach (1861-1959) and Louisa Webster Beach (1862-1951). The papers relate to these three family lines.

Correspondence, writings, speeches, diaries, clippings, printed matter, sermons, and other papers of two centuries of Beecher family members. The papers relate principally to Henry Ward Beecher (1813-1887), popular 19th century clergyman and orator, and members of his family. Among those represented are his father, the Reverend Lyman Beecher (1775-1863), clergyman; his brothers, Edward Beecher (1803-1895), educator and antislavery leader, and Thomas Kinnicut Beecher (1824-1900) and Charles Beecher (1815-1900), both clergyman and antislavery activist; and his sisters, Harriett Elizabeth (Beecher) Stowe (1811-1896), author, Catherine Esther Beecher (1800-1878), pioneer educator and writer on 'domestic economy,' and Isabella Homes (Beecher) Hooker (1822-1907), well-known suffragist. Also included are papers relating to the Scoville family (mainly Annie Beecher Scoville, 1866-1953, teacher and lecturer), as well as other related families. The papers cover an extremely wide range of cultural, political, social, and religious issues and topics of 19th and early 20th century America and include correspondence from a large number of well-known men and women. The papers were previously known as the Beecher-Scoville Family Papers.

The papers consist of correspondence, writings, photographs, printed material, and other papers documenting the personal lives and professional careers of the Beer family. Extensive files of correspondence and papers for family members from the 1850s through the 1980s detail the lives and activities of such family members as William Collins Beer, a lobbyist for J.P. Morgan and Company, International Harvester Company, and the government of Italy, and a close friend of Mark Hanna; Thomas Beer, a prominent American author of novels, short stories, and articles; and Richard C. Beer, a foreign service employee stationed in Hungary during the 1920s.

Journals, letterbook, medical notes, and essays of Benajah Ticknor, doctor and surgeon with the U.S. Navy. Of primary importance are the journals which describe journeys made by Ticknor with the Navy to South America, the Far East, and Europe.

The papers consist of correspondence, diaries, writings, clippings, photographs, and topical files documenting the career of Benjamin Frank Heintzleman, particularly his term as territorial governor of Alaska (1953-1957) and his work promoting industrial growth and economic development in Alaska.

Student notes on lectures in literature and the classics Perrin attended in Berlin (1876-1878), notes for lectures at Adelbert College and Yale University, corrected proofs for a volume of Plutarch's Lives, and miscellaneous personal papers, largely relating to Perrin's office as writer of the presentations for the honorary degrees at Yale University commencements (1902-1911). Included also is a small amount of correspondence about his publications and five volumes of diaries (1896-1913).

Includes circa 100 letters (1838-1855) to Alvah Hunt, of Greene, Chenango Co, N.Y, describing current political issues, especially Whig politics, from Millard Fillmore, Hamilton Fish, Horace Greeley, Washington Hunt, William H. Collection consists of manuscripts (correspondence and drafts of writings), illustration material (drawings in all media, photographs, book dummies, and printing blocks and plates), and publication proofs by various authors and artists including Louisa May Alcott, Alexander Anderson, Louis-Maurice Boutet de Monvel, Gelett Burgess, Harrison Cady, Palmer Cox, F. O. C. Darley, W. W. Denslow, Jo Mora, Peter Newell, and Symeon Shimin, as well as work produced for the McLoughlin Brothers publishing house. Also present are penmanship exercise books, samplers, and other school work produced by American children including John Hancock and his brother Ebenezer, letters of advice written to children by prominent figures such as Samuel Clemens, Charles Dodgson, Benjamin Franklin, and George Washington, and writings created by and for Native American children. The collection also includes Shirley's own collection files which document how she created her collection.

The papers consist of correspondence, writings, legal and financial documents, and other papers of six generations of Bidwell family members. Principal figures include Barnabas Bidwell (1763-1833), lawyer and politician in Massachusetts and Kingston, Ontario; and his son, Marshall Spring Bidwell (1799-1872), lawyer and politician in Kingston and New York City.

Correspondence, diaries, account books, daybooks, legal papers, deeds, and land books of the Boardman family of New Haven and New Milford, Conn., which had extensive real estate holdings in Connecticut and the Western Reserve. Family members include William Whiting Boardman, (1794-1871) lawyer and probate judge of New Haven, Conn.; his father Elijah Boardman, (1760-1823) U.S. Senator from Connecticut who had holdings in the Connecticut Land Company and the three Ohio townships of Palmyra, Boardman, and Medina; his brother, George Sherman Boardman, (1799-1825) and his son, William Jarvis Boardman, (b.1832) attorney for the Valley Railroad Company, and holder of real estate in Cleveland, Ohio, New Haven, Conn., and Chattanooga, Tenn.

The Board of Capitol Commissioners oversaw construction of a new State Capitol building in Hartford.

The letters and sermons consist of materials pertaining to Nathaniel Bouton, John Benedict Bouton, Harriet A. Bouton, and other Bouton family members. Nathaniel Bouton was pastor of the First Congregational Church in Concord, New Hampshire; a historian; and a member of numerous organizations. John Benedict Bouton was a hatter and volunteer soldier in Company H of the 8th Regiment Connecticut Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. Included in the letters and sermons are correspondence, sermons, a diary entry, and photographs.

The Brass Workers History Project was a group of historians and film makers who were interested in researching the experiences of Waterbury brass workers in the early 1980s. The project collected oral history interviews, original archival materials and copies of reference material. The project culminated in a documentary film called Brass Valley and a book with the same title. This project influenced the Mattatuck Museum's oral history projects and its history gallery.

The papers consist of correspondence, writings, speeches, scrapbooks, photographs, diaries, and other papers, primarily of David Josiah Brewer, lawyer and justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. The material includes Brewer's personal and family papers, although there are some papers relating to public matters, notably the Anglo-Venezuelan boundary dispute. Also included are papers of five generations of Brewer family members, including Josiah Brewer (1796-1872), the father of David Josiah Brewer. Nearly all of the family material consists of correspondence and is largely related to family matters.

Correspondence, financial records, diaries, scrapbooks, account books and memorabilia of the Bristol family of New Haven and New London, Connecticut. The major figures in the collection are the descendants of Simeon Bristol (1739-1805); his son, William Bristol, and his grandsons, William Brooks Bristol, and Louis Bristol, all prominent lawyers, judges and members of the state legislature in Connecticut.Nearly a third of the papers is made up of land deeds for New Haven and New London counties (1765-1854). The voluminous correspondence (2,569 letters) extends over several generations from 1798 to 1879. Of particular interest are the fifty-one letters by Louis Bristol written from Paris to family members and to Timothy Dwight Edwards describing the Revolution of 1830. Between 1829 and 1857 William Brooks Bristol wrote 581 letters to his brother Louis, chiefly on the question of buying and selling railroad stocks. Additional papers of the brothers include records of their law practice, account books and business corrspondence. Also a diary (1834-1844) kept by Louis Bristol recording his life as a student at Yale College, his surveying experience and his courtship, together with twenty-nine compositions written while at Yale. Eugene Stuart Bristol, son of William Brooks Bristol, is represented by letter books and extensive financial records (1869-1873) documenting his mining operations at Bingham Canyon, Utah.

Correspondence, legal and financial papers, a diary and miscellaneous items of the Bronson family of Washington, Connecticut. The largest part of the papers are those of Moseley Virgil Bronson (1806-1890), documenting his career as an officer of the Connecticut militia and as a teacher in New York and Connecticut. Of particular interest are the letters of Edna Moseley Todd, who moved to Virginia in 1821, and whose letters to various members of the family describe her life as a mother and school teacher, as well as offering comments on slavery and abolitionism. Also in the papers is the diary of Maria N. Fowler Ford, recording her experience as a physician's wife in Hawaii (1854-1858) and in New York and Connecticut (1858-1861). There are also miscellaneous papers of the Hollister family.

The papers consist of correspondence, diaries, legal and financial records, writings, memorabilia, and pictorial material which document the activities of four generations of Bunnell and Sterling family members living primarily in Connecticut and New York. Correspondence, diaries, writings, and memorabilia document the Yale academic careers of Sterling Haight and Frank Scott Bunnell and John W. Sterling, the Civil War service of Rufus W. Bunnell and Henry T. Plant, and the travels of family members to destinations including the Southern and Western United States, Europe, and Hawaii. Correspondence, legal and financial records, diaries, and pictorial material document the respective architectural, engineering, and teaching careers of Rufus W., Sterling Haight, and Frank Scott Bunnell. The activities of female members of the Bunnell and Sterling families as mothers, wives, and daughters are documented by material thoughout the papers.

The collection contains, among other personal papers, a diary documenting Mr. Starr's 1861-1862 travels through Europe and the Holy Land.

The papers are made up almost entirely of diaries and account books that record Bannihr's business career, both as the owner of a trimming business in New York, and as an engraver and die sinker. Bannihr's early diaries (1883-1891) describe his life as a young working man in Cheshire, Connecticut, where he was active in Democratic politics and the district school committee. Included in the diaries are descriptions of his mechanical inventions. His wife also kept a diary for a portion of this period (1890-1893), which takes in the years of their courtship and early married life. Samples of Bannihr's work in the form of plaster casts, master molds, and metal dies are also in the collection.

The Camp Family Papers contains various correspondence and personal records collected by the Camp Family. Some of the correspondence includes letters from Reverend Albert Camp, his wife Frances Camp, their Daughter Nancy Camp, son Wallace Camp, and Aunt Mary Shears. The collection also contains sermon notes and sermons by Reverend Albert Camp, as well as instructions to household help from Frances Camp. Also in the collection are correspondence by Orton Camp Jr. sent to his parents detailing his time serving in World War II. Also from this same time period are photographs of Orton Camp Jr. and various army medals. Interesting to note is Orton Camp Jr.'s personal records, which contains letters from the Mattatuck Museum as well as Taft School.

The papers consist of diaries (1779-1831) of Samuel Canby and 24 letters to James Canby from James Asheton Bayard, Outerbridge Horsey, Louis McLane and Samuel White. Also included is a copy of the agricultural almanac for 1819 annotated by Samuel Canby.

The collection comprises travel sketches, scrapbooks, and genealogical material concerning the Carr family of Northumberland, England.
