The archive consists of correspondence, writings, personal papers, photographs, audiovisual material and memorabilia documenting Gombrowicz's life and literary activity chiefly during the last two decades of his life (1949-69).
Series I, Correspondence, contains personal and professional correspondence. There is correspondence with family, Polish and European literary and cultural figures, other Polish emigres, and Latin American friends and writers. There is considerable correspondence with editors and publishers, including Jerzy Giedroyc, the Polish editor of Gombrowicz's works. Other Polish correspondents include Tadeusz Breza, Zofia Chadzynska, Jozef Czapski, Maria Dabrowska, Jaroslaw Iwaszkiewicz, Constantin Jelenski, Tadeusz Kantor, Maria Szczepanska Kuncewiczowa, Czeslaw Milosz, Zygmunt Mycielski, Artur Sandauer, Leopold Tyrmand, Kaimierz Wierzynski, and Jozef Wittlin.
Series II, Writings of Gombrowicz, consists of novels, plays, shorter works, autobiographical writings, and other writings. There are drafts and printed versions of shorter works, including stories, articles, interviews, and open letters. There are drafts of more significant works, including: holograph and typescript drafts of the novel Kosmos; holograph and typescript drafts of the play Operetka; drafts, with many fragments, of different Dziennik (diaries); and a typescript draft of Guide de la philosophie en six heures un quart.
Series III, Adaptations by Others of Gombrowicz's Works, contains theater scenarios, film treatments, and other material based on works by Gombrowicz. Series IV, Theater Programs, contains programs for theatrical adaptations of Gombrowicz's works. Series V, Writings of Others About Gombrowicz, contains articles, bibliographies, published letters, transcripts for radio broadcasts, theses and student papers, and material related to a special issue of the journal L'Herne, devoted to Gombrowicz, edited by Constantin Jelenski and Dominique de Roux.
Series VI, Commemorative Works and Activities, consists of obituaries and tributes issued in the months following Gombrowicz's death, and correspondence, organizational records, and printed material from commemorative events dating from the late 1980s. Series VII, Audiovisual Materials, includes both audio recordings and moving image media. Audio recordings encompass recordings of programs about Gombrowicz and adaptations of his works for radio. Moving image media includes amateur films, documentaries about Gombrowicz, and theater and film productions of Gombrowicz's works.
Series VIII and IX consist of Photographs and Personal Papers respectively. There are photograph albums of Gombrowicz for periods in Poland, Argentina, and Europe, and later photographs of theater and film productions and commemorative events. Personal Papers includes personal documents, family papers relating to the history of the Gombrowicz family, and a small number of writings by family members. Series X, Rita Gombrowicz Papers, contains material gathered by Gombrowicz's wife following his death, and is organized into subseries for correspondence, research files, writings, clippings, and printed ephemera.
Series XI, Clippings, consists of printed material, including journals, book catalogues, printed ephemera, and clippings of articles related directly to Gombrowicz and his work. Series XII, Posters, includes posters for plays, exhibitions, films, and festivals by Polish poster artists Franciszek Starowieyski, Jan Lenica, Waldemar Swierzy, Wiktor Sadowski, Wieslaw Walkuski, and others.

The papers consist of correspondence, writings, speeches, scrapbooks, photographs, diaries, and other papers, primarily of David Josiah Brewer, lawyer and justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. The material includes Brewer's personal and family papers, although there are some papers relating to public matters, notably the Anglo-Venezuelan boundary dispute. Also included are papers of five generations of Brewer family members, including Josiah Brewer (1796-1872), the father of David Josiah Brewer. Nearly all of the family material consists of correspondence and is largely related to family matters.

The William A. Graham collection of television scripts contains scripts and other material for American television anthology series and other programs from the mid 1950s through late 1960s.

Correspondence, writings, and research materials by and about Cai Yongchun (Ts'ai Yung-ch'un) (1904-1983), provide insight into the life and work of a Chinese scholar, educator, and theologian, and into conditions in China during the Cultural Revolution.

The records consist of correspondence, reports, committee records, grant proposals, and audiotapes of meetings and presentations documenting the Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute.

The records consist of administrative files, reports, correspondence, and personnel and student records documenting the Department of the History of Science and Medicine (known as the Department of the History of Medicine prior to 1959) at the Yale Medical School. Included are the records of the department chairs John Farquhar Fulton, Frederick Lawrence Holmes, Derek John de Solla Price, and Lloyd Grenfell Stevenson, and the correspondence of professors George Rosen and Henry Ernest Sigerist.

The Carl Van Vechten Papers includes correspondence, writings, photographs, scrapbooks and albums, and artwork documenting Carl Van Vechten's activities as a writer, photographer, and patron of the arts.

The papers are comprised of writings, collected ephemera, correspondence, book and article research materials, and audio-visual materials documenting the personal and professional lives of Christopher Phillips.

The papers document the personal life and literary career of Bryher. Her extensive correspondence includes letters from H. D., Robert MacAlmon, Kenneth MacPherson, Norman Holmes Pearson, Sylvia Beach, Norman Douglas, Horace Gregory, Islay Lyons, and Edith Sitwell, and from many other
figures in the fields of literature, psychoanalysis, and film. There are manuscripts of many of her works, including fragments of an unpublished volume of autobiography; financial and personal papers; material collected by Bryher on "boys' books" authors such as R. M. Ballantyne and G. A. Henty; and documentation of Bryher's interest in film and the making of Borderline (1930).

The Henri Chopin Papers document the work and life of French avant-garde poet and musician Henri Chopin. The papers consist of personal and professional correspondence, subject files, writings relating to various publications, artwork, writings of others, photographs, audiovisual materials, and posters spanning the years 1948 to 2009.

Also included are manuscripts and drafts of his books, columns, and speeches. In addition there are diaries and engagement books, photographs of Walter Lippmann with family and friends, requests to speak or write, honors, and film and audio tapes.

The papers consist of material created and accumulated by James Lapine in the course of his creative and professional activities as a playwright and director. The collection, a part of the William A. Speck Collection of Goetheana, consists of correspondence, documents, playscripts, and other writings by or relating to Goethe and his work. The major strength of the manuscript collection is its documentation of Goethe's literary reception in England and America in the nineteenth century. There are 25 letters and manuscripts in Goethe's hand, and several Faust-related items. Authors represented prominently besides Goethe include Thomas Carlyle, Frank Claudy, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, the Faust collector Georg Ehrhardt, Walther Wolfgang von Goethe, August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben, University of Illinois professor Julius Goebel, Anna Jameson, Johann Caspar Lavater, Friederich von Müller, Henry Crabb Robinson, Friedrich Schiller, Carl Frederick Schreiber, Horatio Robinson Storer, Bayard Taylor, Marie (Hansen) Taylor, Karl August Ludwig Philipp Varnhagen von Ense, and Albert Wünsch.

The Wilton Historical Society Photograph Collection contains photographs, slides, postcards, paintings, line drawings, and other imagery pertaining to Wilton history. Many of these items are loose; some are framed or matted;a large number are stored as they were originally arranged: in family photograph albums, personal scrapbooks, and slide carousels. The bulk of the collection is from the late nineteenth century through the mid-twentieth century.

This collection is an addendum to the publications, correspondence, reports, statements, and collected material documenting the work of the Washington Office on Africa found in Record Group 105. The Washington Office on Africa was founded in 1972 to support the movement for freedom from white-minority rule in southern Africa. Its activities have included the monitoring of Congressional legislation and executive policies and actions, as well as the publication of action alerts and other documentation designed to advance progressive legislation and policy on southern Africa. Supported by church bodies and unions, the WOA has worked in partnership with colleagues in Africa, the Africa advocacy community in the United States, and grassroots organizations concerned with various aspects of African affairs.

The papers consist of photocopies of correspondence, memoranda, clippings, printed material, transcripts of telephone conversations, and other declassified material from the national headquarters and New Haven, Connecticut office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, pertaining to the New Haven Chapter of the Black Panther Party. The papers document the investigation of the 1969 murder of Alex Rackley, the subsequent arrests of Bobby Seale and other party members, the surveillance of various demonstrations and protests, particularly those relating to May Day, 1970, and the 1971 trials of Seale and Erika Huggins.

An artificial collection of publications, including propaganda, leaflets, posters, underground material, newspapers, correspondence, and memorabilia written in approximately fifteen languages from fifty nations which relate to World War II.

The papers include correspondence, manuscripts, research notes, newspaper clippings, and teaching materials which document the career of James Harvey Rogers. The correspondence documents Rogers's academic appointments, research, participation in formulating economic policies for the New Deal, his post as American representative to the Economic Committee of the League of Nations, and his trip to China, Japan, and India in 1934 as a representative of the U.S. Treasury to study the silver situation. Rogers's academic life is represented by extensive notes taken during his graduate studies at Yale University (1912-1916), correspondence with members of the Economics Department (1930-1939), examinations, student papers, and material relating to Pierson College, of which he was a fellow. Rogers's research material includes offprints, clippings, press releases, and other materials on international trade, war debts, foreign investments, European economic problems, monetary reform, and the Depression. Personal papers include a small quantity of family correspondence and diaries of trips to Europe.

The Harvey Williams Cushing Papers in the Yale University Library are composed of correspondence, subject files, writings, family papers, artifacts, and writings about Harvey Cushing. The papers document the personal life and professional career of a medical giant and pioneer neurosurgeon. They reveal Cushing as a doctor, teacher, soldier, administrator, bibliophile, and scientist, whose diverse achievements are important to the histories of the Harvard Medical School, Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, and the Yale University Medical School and Library, as well as to the history of brain surgery. Harvey Williams Cushing was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on April 9, 1869. He was the youngest of ten children of Henry Kirke and Betsey Maria (Williams) Cushing. Medicine was a family tradition. His father was a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Western Reserve University. His brother, Edward Fitch, grandfather, and great-grandfather were also physicians. His grandfather, Erastus Cushing, had moved to Cleveland in 1835 from Massachusetts, where the family had become established some two hundred years earlier.

An artificial collection, the Connecticut Soldiers Collection was created to provide a starting point for research concerning the experiences of Connecticut servicemen from the Civil War through the Vietnam War. The sources for the materials are provided in the collection.

The papers of Lee Friedlander include photographs, correspondence, work files, book projects, printed materials, awards, objects, audiovisual materials, and computer disks documenting his career as a photographer, including his work process, exhibitions, publications, business activities, and honors. Photographs include color slide portraits of musicians; black and white slides; exhibition prints of western landscapes; and work prints corresponding to exhibition prints held by the Beinecke Library, Yale University, and the Yale University Art Gallery. The collection also includes personal papers documenting his relationships with family and friends, in particular his wife Maria Friedlander.

The Basil Davenport Papers consist chiefly of correspondence, including a substantial number of outgoing letters from Davenport to his family. The collection also contains Davenport's diaries, drafts of his writings and translations, printed material documenting his career and critical work, and personal papers including genealogical material.

The papers consist of correspondence, writings, personal papers, diaries and journals, photographs, and scrapbooks relating to the life and career of Loomis Havemeyer. The collection documents Havemeyer's childhood, his experiences at Hill School, undergraduate and graduate studies at Yale University, as well as his lengthy career as an instructor and an administrator at the university. Details regarding Havemeyer's personal life are recorded primarily in his diaries and in his autobiographical writings. An audiotape of his memorial service is included. The papers also include travel diaries of Loomis Havemeyer's sister, Julia Loomis Havemeyer, which record in detail her summer travels abroad.

The Miscellaneous Personal Papers record group is an open collection consisting of the correspondence, diaries, writings and/or other papers and memorabilia of various individuals. This collection contains papers of individuals who were Yale faculty members, alumni/ae, clergy, ecumenical workers, or missionaries in areas other than China.

The papers consist of correspondence, memoranda, reports, designs, photographs, audiovisual materials, clippings, printed material, and miscellanea documenting the personal life and professional career of Edward J. Logue, lawyer, politician, and urban planner and administrator. Urban planning materials detail his activity in New Haven, Boston, and New York state. Student papers document Logue's life as a Yale University undergraduate and law student (1939-1942; 1945-1947). Copies of Ambassador Chester Bowles's correspondence reflect Logue's role in the foreign service and U.S.-Indian relations. Extensive office files for New Haven and Boston redevelopment work (1954-1967) detail Logue's pioneer work in modern urban planning and provide documentation on the political, business, social, and cultural development of these cities. Urban Development Corporation files provide similar documentation for Logue's work in New York state. Boston mayoral files and scrapbooks include additional documentation on Logue's political career, his redevelopment work, and the city of Boston.

This collection consists of photographs and papers that document the work of David Plowden as a photographer and author, 1948-2011. The photographic work in the collection records scenes from main streets and churches in small towns to barns and grain elevators in farmlands, as well as industrial cityscapes of cities like Chicago, Illinois, and New York City. The images also document railroads and their infrastructures, as well as bridges and canals throughout the United States and Canada, and maritime vessels, such as tugboats, steamboats, and ferries, which use the North American rivers, lakes, and harbors. A group of photographs also document sites related to Abraham Lincoln, which Plowden used in his work, Lincoln and His America (New York: Viking Press, 1970).

The papers consist of correspondence, writings, research and professional files, and photographs documenting the life and career of Ralph Mayer, particularly his work on paint technology.

The collection consists of transcripts of interviews conducted by Veljko Bulajić, a Yugoslav filmmaker, in preparation for a television biography of Josip Broz Tito. There are also a few transcripts for interviews conducted by others. The collection also contains copies of photographs from various repositories of Tito or important people, places, and events in his life.

The George W. Wilbur Family Papers consist of correspondence, case files, financial papers, notebooks, documents, writings, diaries, maps, photographs, and printed material which document the life of George W. Wilbur and his family.

The records consist of correspondence, observation books, memoranda, and research notes documenting the activities and operations of the Yale Department of Astronomy. Included are subject files maintained by the directors of the Yale Observatory.

The records consist of program files, correspondence, memoranda, reports, financial papers, and student records documenting the activities and operations of the Yale Summer and Special Programs. Also included are materials on curriculum, conferences, minority programs, budgets, the Lilly Visiting Faculty Program, and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The Eugene O'Neill Papers document the life of dramatist Eugene O'Neill, especially his life with Carlotta Monterey O'Neill after 1928. Correspondents include O'Neill's lawyers, Harry Weinberger and Winfield E. Aronberg; his agent, the Richard J. Madden Play Company, Inc.; friends and colleagues; and family members, including his daughter, Oona, his sons, Shane and Eugene, Jr., his third wife, Carlotta, and her daughter, Cynthia Chapman Stram.
The collection also contains Carlotta's correspondence after O'Neill's death. There is correspondence with her lawyers at Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft and at Nutter, McClennen & Fish; the Yale Library system regarding her gift of O'Neill's papers; biographers of O'Neill; others concerning her work on the production and publication of O'Neill's plays; and friends and family members. There are also letters from former husband Ralph Barton before she married O'Neill.
Writings include notes, outlines and plot summaries, drafts (typescript and holograph), proofs, contracts, programs, and clippings for many of O'Neill's plays. There are some poems and other writings, as well as his work diaries, in which he documented his writing schedule from 1924 to 1943. There are also some works by others about O'Neill's life and writing.
The personal papers include address books, membership certificates, awards for O'Neill's writing, Carlotta's diaries from 1928 to 1964, clippings and ephemera about friends and relatives, and financial material, including cancelled checks and checkbooks. The photographs document O'Neill, his family members, friends, colleagues, pets, and places where he lived and visited. Some of the photographs are in albums. There are also photographs of productions of his plays, from 1916 to 1966. The memorabilia includes office materials, writing tools, jewelry, and locks of hair, among other items. Artists represented in the collection include Cyrus Leroy Baldridge, Miguel Covarrubias, Alfred Joseph Frueh, and Robert Edmond Jones. Some of the artworks are portraits of O'Neill; others pertain to his plays; others were given to, or collected by, the O'Neills. The recordings (all after O'Neill's death) include three recordings of O'Neill plays and one tribute to O'Neill.

The records consist of correspondence, subject files, project files, budgets and financial statements, motion picture film, videotapes, and audiotapes documenting projects and operations of Yale University Films. Records concerning the Yale Media Design Studio are also included.

The Steven H. Scheuer Collection of Television Program Scripts contains approximately five thousand American television scripts dating from about 1953 to 1963. The scripts offer insight into programming during the period in which television became a fixture in the average home and the primary medium for news and entertainment. The collection contains a wide range of program genres, including variety shows, drama serials, historical drama, crime drama and reenactments, plays, situation comedies, westerns, documentaries, interviews, music, and religious programs. All three major broadcast networks in the United States during this time period--ABC, CBS, and NBC--are represented. The collection also contains a small number of press releases and some material documenting the activities of TV Key, including draft reports and synopses.

The papers contain correspondence, memoranda, position papers, reports, speeches, appointment books, photographs, scrapbooks, and films documenting the career of Richard C. Lee, mayor of New Haven, 1954-1969. The Lee Papers document the professional and public life of Lee, not his personal life. The papers contain correspondence and other materials on the practice of urban politics, urban renewal, New Haven's efforts in the war on poverty, civil rights and race relations, town-gown relations, and his interaction with local and state Democratic Party leaders. The papers also include campaign files covering the period 1949-1968, appointment books, photographs documenting the course of redevelopment, a small amount of material on Lee's life after he left office, and political scrapbooks.

The Veteran Association of the Hartford City Guard was organized on November 26, 1867. It was composed of those persons who were active or honorary members of the Hartford City Guard prior to July 5, 1865. The Association's main objective was social with the intention "to keep alive old and pleasant memories and perpetuation of recollections of the old Company." Each year they held a reunion on the second Wednesday of January. The first reunion was held on January 8, 1868. At their 50th reunion held in 1917, it was agreed that it should be the last reunion.

Harleigh Bradley Trecker was born 11 February 1911 in Calery, Illinois. Trecker attended George Williams College (B.S., 1934) and the University of Chicago (M.A., 1938) before embarking upon a career in social work. From 1938 until 1941, Trecker was an instructor at George Williams College and in 1941; he accepted a position at the University of Southern California. In 1951, Trecker accepted the position of Dean, School of Social Work at the University of Connecticut; a position he retained until 1968. From 1968 until his retirement in 1977, Trecker held the position of Professor of Social Work. Trecker's research focused on social work administration and boards of community service agencies. Harleigh Trecker died in 1986.

The papers consist largely of short stories, reviews, criticism, notes, and a small quantity of correspondence.

The papers contain correspondence, newsletters, diplomatic papers, and reports documenting Blathwayt's career and English foreign policy and history in the late 17th and early 18th centuries.

The Yale Collection of American Literature Letter Collection contains single letters and small groups of letters acquired by the Beinecke Library from various sources and at various times, previously represented in the Beinecke Manuscripts Card Catalog. Letters sometimes include enclosures such as manuscript drafts and clippings. Folders frequently contain additional provenance, descriptive, or other information not reflected in this list.

The collection consists of material gathered by Lindsay Fleming in the course of his research on the life and work of Samuel Lysons, and includes correspondence with scholars and Lyson family descendants; transcripts of portions of Lysons's diary and his letters to Hester Thrale Piozzi; the typsecript of Fleming's "Memoirs and Select Letters of Samuel Lysons"; photographs; and letters to and from Daniel and Samuel Lysons. The correspondence of Daniel Lysons mainly concerns his topographical studies; the correspondence of Samuel Lysons documents his antiquarian interests and his work as Keeper of the Records. Correspondents include William Coxe, Sir Thomas Lawrence, Thomas Penrose, and Wilfred Merton.

The collection contains correspondence, dossiers, printed works, and other papers documenting the friendship between Robert Browning and Ripert-Monclar and the life and business career of Ripert-Monclar. Also included are twentieth century materials concerning efforts to publish the Browning-Monclar correspondence.

Correspondence, writings and photographs by or about Alfred Austin. The correspondence consists of 14 letters from Austin to various people,and over 140 letters to Austin or his wife. The writings consist of holograph drafts, typescripts, and proofs of poems, playscripts, and notes by Austin. The photographs consist of portraits of Austin and views of his estate, Swinford.

Contains chiefly British (as well as other European and American) historical and literary manuscripts and autographs, including items by James Boswell, Jr., Hall Caine, Thomas Frognall Dibdin, John Masefield, Mary Russell Mitford, Richard Brinsley Sheridan, Algernon Charles Swinburne, Anthony Trollope, and John Wilkes.
