These interview tapes and transcripts were produced as part of United Nations Oral History Project sponsored by the Institution for Social and Policy Studies of Yale University to document significant events in the history of the United Nations and its operations. Interviewees include U.N. officials, ambassadors from various countries, and other participants in the events documented. Events and topics documented include the San Francisco conference, the founding of the U.N., its charter, the founding of Israel, Middle East wars, the Congo, Korea, the Cuban Missile Crisis, relief operations, secretaries-general, the Falklands/Malvinas war, Iraqi weapons inspections, and United Nations operations.

Established in 1912, the African National Congress was created to provide a political avenue for the struggle for equality of Blacks in South Africa. Working in exile from 1960 until 1990, members of the ANC established foreign offices to continue the political work necessary to end apartheid in South Africa. The governing party since 1994, the ANC has established its archives at the University of Fort Hare, an historically Black institution. In March 1999, the ANC and the University of Connecticut signed a Memorandum of Understanding establishing a partnership to foster training, assistance and cooperation.

The files consist of inventories and a card index for Frederick W. Beinecke's Western Americana collection. The collection documented in this material was donated to the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, chiefly between 1960 and 1971. The inventories (Series I.) document Frederick W. Beinecke's larger donations, including a collection on the Mexican War in 1960, a collection of printed material in 1962, and material donated at the time of his death in 1971. The card index (Series II.) documents Frederick W. Beinecke's acquisition of material in the 1950s and 1960s and includes documentation of provenance and acquisition, and descriptions provided by booksellers. The cards also include notes on handling of the material at Yale. The index cards informed the descriptions of material in catalog records in Yale University Library's catalog.
