Manuscript copies of documents in the Bibliothèque Nationale, the Archives Nationales and other archival sources in France, almost all relating to religious questions in the Languedoc region. The copies, which were made at the turn of the century, are contained in 373 volumes. Two collections from the Bibliothèque Nationale make up the major portion of the collection: The Collection de Languedoc (48 v.).

An artificial collection of correspondence, financial, legal, and government documents, political memoirs, military records, literary manuscripts, and autographs relating to Great Britain, 1362-1945. An anonymous essay about Charlotte Corday, memoirs attributed to George Grenville, and writings by George Grote and Sir Henry Maine are included.

The collection contains three parts: autograph documents and letters, Bowling Green Press records, and contemporary American newspapers. The most significant part of the collection are the ca. 45 autograph items relating to French military history from the Middle Ages through the 19th century. There are also 12 carbon copies (signed) of letters from Theodore Roosevelt to various recipients (1911-1913) together with notes, extracts, and full copies of Roosevelt speeches (1912-1913). Series II of the collection is made up of the records of the Bowling Green Press of New York City, of which Arthur Pforzheimer was treasurer. Included are correspondence, ledgers, account books and incorporation papers. Contemporary memorabilia collected by Walter Pforzheimer is comprised of the initial issues of the Washington Times and U.S.A. Today and the final issue of the Washington Star.

A collection of pamphlets from African, South American, Latin American, Asian, European, and North American countries which include material relating to politics, economics, social conditions, agriculture, legal topics, religious activities, history, government operations, education, and other areas. The collection is particularly strong in the area of African materials, with several nations represented.

This collection consists of documents, manuscripts and pamphlets related to the history, culture and government of the Department Haute-Loire in France and to the city of Puy.

The papers detail the personal lives and professional careers of several generations and family lines of the Baldwin family. The legal, political, and business activities of family members in Connecticut, New York, and elsewhere are documented. Major topics include: family, women, law, education, Connecticut and New York politics and government, New Haven, Connecticut, and Yale University.

Papers from two villages in the South Tyrol: Algund and Tramin. The papers from Algund relate to the parsonage and include inventories and various legal forms concerning the duties of the parson. The larger group of papers pertain to the administration of an imperial vineyard located near Tramin and contains lists of deliveries together with miscellaneous correspondence (1596-1720).

Printed censorship decrees (1626-1789) issued by the Parlement of Paris, provincial Parlements, the Conseil d'Etat du Roi, bishops and archbishops in France, Pope Clemens XI, and others make up the largest part of the French government documents and political pamphlets. Most of the works banned are ecclesiastical. A small amount of political literature and government decrees from the period of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic era are also included.

The papers consist of correspondence, papers, volumes, deeds, and other material documenting several generations of the Johnson family of Connecticut and New York. Samuel Johnson (1696-1772), William Samuel Johnson (1727-1819), William Samuel Johnson (1795-1883), and Samuel William Johnson (1828-1895) are prominent figures in the papers. The correspondence of William Livingston (1723-1790) and Noah Welles (1718-1776) is also arranged in the papers. In addition to extensive correspondence between Johnson family members, the papers contain material relating to Connecticut and New York politics in the colonial and Revolutionary War periods, and religion, land development, and Indian affairs in the nineteenth century. Additions to the papers include family correspondence, sketchbooks of Katharine Livingston Bayard Johnson, a diary and account books of Sarah Dwight Woolsey Johnson, photographs by Robert Bayard Severy; Livington family genealogy, by Margaret S. Rutgers; multi-generational account book, and photographs of eighteenth-century documents related to William Samuel Johnson.

An artificial collection of diaries relating to Connecticut and other states and regions in the United States. Topics including farming, religion, military life, student life, travel, and the weather are documented.

The papers contain legal documents, correspondence, and miscellaneous papers primarily concerned with Gaston-François-Christophe de Lévis, duc de Ventadour (1794-1863). The papers, in French, primarily relate to inheritance of land in Martinique.

The papers consist of correspondence, deeds, account books, estate records, architectural drawings, legal papers, notebooks, commonplace books, letterbooks, scrapbooks, daybooks, and miscellaneous papers documenting the personal lives and professional careers of three generations of the Hillhouse family of New Haven, Connecticut and New York. Major figures represented in the papers include: James Hillhouse (1754-1832), Mary Lucas Hillhouse (1785-1871), James Abraham Hillhouse (1789-1841), Augustus Lucus Hillhouse (1791-1859), and James Hillhouse (1854-1938). The papers document family relationships, personal activities, the business and legal careers of family members, political interests, and the architectural design of the family residence, Sachem's Wood.

The papers consist of the 111 volume diary, dating 1754-1765, of Thomas Turner, shopkeeper, school-master, and church warden in the village of East Hoathly in Sussex, England. There is also additional historical material relating to both Turner and his diary including some papers related to its proposed publication in the later 1940s.

The papers consist of correspondence, writings, speeches, scrapbooks, photographs, diaries, and other papers, primarily of David Josiah Brewer, lawyer and justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. The material includes Brewer's personal and family papers, although there are some papers relating to public matters, notably the Anglo-Venezuelan boundary dispute. Also included are papers of five generations of Brewer family members, including Josiah Brewer (1796-1872), the father of David Josiah Brewer. Nearly all of the family material consists of correspondence and is largely related to family matters.

The papers consist of autographs and collected letters, sermons, teaching materials, research notes and documents, and the typescript of Kenneth Cameron's master's thesis on Othello (1931). A large part of the papers relates to the Church of the Holy Trinity in Hartford, Connecticut and contains a substantial collection of the sermons, writings and speeches of the Reverend Ernest Fremery Miel, manuscripts of Sir Arthur Gorges, sermons of Joseph G. H. Barry and papers relating to the construction of the church, 1870-1874. Also in the papers are a number of Civil War documents, including papers of P. P. Pitkin and letters to the U. S. Treasury from officers of the U. S. Colored Regiments. Another group of letters, written between 1885 and 1917, to Samuel Hart, concerns the American Book of Common Prayer. Also included are research materials on the Concord School of Philosophy and Literature.

The papers consist of correspondence, legal papers, diaries, estate records, account books, notebooks, deeds, and miscellanea of the Alsop family of Middletown, Connecticut. Several generations of family members are represented in the papers including: Joseph Wright Alsop (1772-1844), Joseph Wright Alsop (1804-1878), Joseph Wright Alsop (1838-1891), Joseph Wright Alsop (1876-1953), Mary Alsop Oliver Alsop (1815-1893), Richard Alsop (1726-1776), Richard Alsop (1789-1842), Charles Richard Alsop (1802-1865), and John De Koven Alsop (1879-1926). Family mercantile interests in Connecticut and related operations in Bolivia, Chile, and Peru are documented. Files relating to a legal case involving the firm of Alsop & Company, the United States government, and the governments of Bolivia and Chile (1865-1914) are included. The personal papers of several family members are also arranged in the papers.

A collection of autograph letters and manuscripts, many of leading American public figures, collected by Mary Ann Phelps Montgomery. Fifteen letters are addressed to her father, Governor John Smith Phelps (1814-1866) of Missouri, six were written by James G. Blaine (1830-1893), and five by Thomas C. Reynolds of Missouri. The collection includes items signed by four American presidents, several European heads of state, and prominent members of European nobility.

The colletion is composed of papers relating to the British presence in North America during the French and Indian War and consists of correspondence and reports describing military actions, royal decrees, lists of supplies and armaments, and other items of a similar nature. The first part of the collection contains typewritten transcripts of the papers of William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland (1721-1765), copied from originals in the Royal Library at Windsor Castle. The second part consists of photostatic copies of the papers of John Campbell, 4th earl of Loudoun, (1705-1782).

Correspondence, diaries, wills, inventories of estates, financial records, daguerreotypes, drawings, clippings and genealogies of three branches and of seventeen individual members of the Wells family, whose founder William Wells migrated to Brattleboro, Vermont from England in 1793. Major figures in the papers are Jane Wells Howard Green (1808-1884), Edward Watkins Wells (1819-1898) and James Hancox Wells (1774-1857). The diaries of five family members include accounts of travel both in the United States and Europe during the nineteenth century. A three volume diary kept by Jane Green from 1827 to 1830 describes her visit to family in England. Her papers also include extensive correspondence (1845-1904) with various women in the Howard family discussing family affairs and their daily lives, as well as household accounts, an inventory and a photograph. A steamboat trip to Florida (ca. 1855-1860) is described in the diary of Edward Watkinson Wells who also writes of social life in Hartford between 1856 and 1860. Also by Edward Watkinson Wells are a large number of drawings, correspondence, a will, and financial accounts. The papers of James Hancox Wells includes financial records, correspondence, and a daguerreotype. The Wells family material is made up of genealogical records, financial papers, and memorabilia.

The papers consist of correspondence, writings, legal and financial material, congressional papers, family memorabilia, and other papers of various members of the Evarts family of Vermont, Boston, and New York. The principal figures, however, are Jeremiah Evarts (1781-1831), author, editor, lawyer, and philanthropist, and his son, William Maxwell Evarts (1818-1901), lawyer and statesman. The papers of Jeremiah Evarts relate to his work and writings on Congregational orthodoxy, his travels for the American Board of Foreign Missions, and his efforts on behalf of American Indians. His correspondents include family members, fellow members of the Yale Class of 1802, and many well-known clergymen, lawyers, statesmen, and missionaries.

The papers consist of correspondence, writings, notes, and other papers documenting the personal life and professional career of Sir Joseph Banks, a British naturalist and explorer. Correspondence with stewards and landowners in Lincolnshire and elsewhere detail Banks' interest in agriculture and farming. Other papers relate to family estates, to Banks' scientific investigations and to his interest in the exploration of Africa and other regions. A translation of Frederic Horneman's "Travels into the interior of Africa performed for the African Society," (circa 1800) and letters relating to the death of explorer Mungo Park are included.

Chiefly a volume of copies of the decrees, ordinances, and statutes of the Bern city council and chancellery, probably compiled shortly after the French conquest of Bern in 1798. Also in the papers are original documents relating to military expenditures of Ormont (Vaud canton) and Bern in the 1700s.

The papers include correspondence, diaries, notebooks, writings, wills, scrapbooks, albums, genealogical records and memorabilia of several generations of the Schwab family. Principal figures are Gustav Friedrich Schwab; his wife, Eliza Catherine Von Post Schwab; and their son, John Christopher Schwab. The papers of Gustav Friedrich Schwab include business correspondence during his presidency of the firm of Oelrichs & Co. in New York and travel diaries (1843-1846). An additional diary (1883) records his travels during the opening excursion of the Northern Pacific Railroad. The papers of his wife contain an autograph album and diaries (1847-1877). The papers also include material of the German poet Gustav Benjamin Schwab, who was the grandfather of John C. Schwab. The papers of John C. Schwab include his student notebooks both in the United States and in Germany, with half of one notebook (1887-1888) devoted to the lectures of the historian Heinrich von Treitschke.

Correspondence, financial records, diaries, scrapbooks, account books and memorabilia of the Bristol family of New Haven and New London, Connecticut. The major figures in the collection are the descendants of Simeon Bristol (1739-1805); his son, William Bristol, and his grandsons, William Brooks Bristol, and Louis Bristol, all prominent lawyers, judges and members of the state legislature in Connecticut.Nearly a third of the papers is made up of land deeds for New Haven and New London counties (1765-1854). The voluminous correspondence (2,569 letters) extends over several generations from 1798 to 1879. Of particular interest are the fifty-one letters by Louis Bristol written from Paris to family members and to Timothy Dwight Edwards describing the Revolution of 1830. Between 1829 and 1857 William Brooks Bristol wrote 581 letters to his brother Louis, chiefly on the question of buying and selling railroad stocks. Additional papers of the brothers include records of their law practice, account books and business corrspondence. Also a diary (1834-1844) kept by Louis Bristol recording his life as a student at Yale College, his surveying experience and his courtship, together with twenty-nine compositions written while at Yale. Eugene Stuart Bristol, son of William Brooks Bristol, is represented by letter books and extensive financial records (1869-1873) documenting his mining operations at Bingham Canyon, Utah.

Papers of John Maudgridge Snowden Allison, author and professor of history at Yale University. The papers contain correspondence, teaching materials, and research files, including original letters and documents by French political figures of the 18th and 19th century. Among these are François Guizot, Alphonse Larmartine, King Louis Philippe, Chrétien Malesherbes, and Adolphe Thiers. Also included is a promissory note by Talleyrand and documents signed by Louis XVI. Among his personal correspondents are Léon Allégret, Henri Focillon, Henri Malo, Richard L. Tighe, Chauncey Brewster Tinker, Gilbert M. Troxell, and Henri Peyre. Two-thirds of the papers are made up of teaching materials and include lectures and lecture notes, student papers, card files and essays, articles and reviews on French history. Also included are papers relating to Allison's army service during World War I and extensive correspondence with his mother from his school days through World War I.

The collection consists of approximately two hundred letters and several other documents, most signed by English political figures and authors of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

This collection consists of daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, miniature paintings, and other direct positive photographic and non-photographic pictures, brought together here from numerous collections for special preservation and protection. Many of these pictures were formerly listed as part of the Yale Objects and Yale Picture Collections. Others were removed from various collections of personal and family papers: George Kittredge Collection, Gilman Family Papers, Chauncey Family Papers, Leicester Ely Family Papers, Page Family Papers, Wickham Family Papers, Baldwin Family Papers, Bidwell Family Papers, Bingham Family Papers, Brewer Family Papers, Hiram Bingham II Papers, Beecher Family Papers, the Roe Family Papers, Charles Lindbergh Papers, William Henry Brewer Papers, Tarleton Family Papers, Lyman Family Papers, and William Graham Sumner Papers. Most of the pictures are formal or semi-formal portraits of individuals or groups; most are daguerreotypes. Exact information about the dates is usually not available, but most of these pictures were produced in the 1840s and 1850s. Among the portraits of particular interest – historical and aesthetic – are those of Henry Ward Beecher, John C. Calhoun, Josiah Willard Gibbs, Denison Olmsted, and Benjamin Silliman.

The papers consist of correspondence; diaries; writings; childhood, school and college materials; financial, legal, and housekeeping records; reports; memoranda; drawings; maps; publications; artifacts; and memorabilia documenting the life and interests of Charles Augustus Lindbergh. The papers form the largest and most extensive collection of his personal, professional, and family papers. They document his work as a pilot, developer of commercial aviation and rocketry, bio-engineer, air force officer and consultant, pioneer environmentalist, Pulitzer Prize-winning author, and public figure. The papers also document his personal life, including his marriage to Anne Morrow Lindbergh, the loss of his son, and his interest in his family history. Notable correspondents include: William Benton, Kingman Brewster, Richard E. Byrd, Alexis Carrel, William E. Castle, Michael Collins, James H. Doolittle, W. L. Glenn, Robert Goddard, Harry Guggenheim, Donald A. Hall, Herbert Hoover, Thomas Lamont, James Newton, Harold Nicolson, Edward Rickenbacker, S. Dillon Ripley, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Igor Sikorsky, Lowell Thomas, Russell Train, Juan Trippe, Billy Wilder, Robert E. Wood, and Orville Wright. Notable family correspondents include his wife, Anne Morrow Lindbergh, and his mother, Evangeline Lodge Land Lindbergh. The family papers include those of Evangeline Lodge Land Lindbergh, a teacher; his father Charles August Lindbergh; and his grandfather Charles Henry Land, a pioneer dentist and inventor of the porcelain crown.

The papers contain correspondence, Civil War memorabilia, diaries, and photographs of Mason Cogswell Weld, Lewis Ledyard Weld, and Charles T. Weld, sons of Lewis Weld (1796-1853). The collection has letters written from Leipzig, Germany by Mason Weld, 1853-1855; and several letters from Lewis L. Weld describing his life and activities in Colorado, 1860-1863. The bulk of the correspondence, however, dates from the Civil War, in which all three brothers served.

Chiefly the sermons of Joseph Washburn, together with a collection of the sayings of others, written down from memory. Also included are a sheet of maxims written out to display fine penmanship and a Yale College song book (1790). Five letters from his son, Elizur T. Washburn to various members of the family were written during 1829 to describe his trip from New York to London.

The major part of these papers consist of correspondence, business papers and memorabilia relating to Joseph Bonaparte, ex-king of Naples and Spain. These were accumulated by Louis Hypolite Mailliard who acted as secretary to Bonaparte and was later executor of his estate. Most of these papers related to the affairs of the estate, including property in Bordentown, New Jersey, where Napoleon lived in exile from 1816 to 1839. A small amount of the correspondence as well as journals kept by Louis Mailliard from 1835-1844 concern Napoleon's personal affairs. Other members of the Bonaparte family figure in the correspondence as well since the Mailliard family acted as executor for them also. Included in the papers is a small amount of miscellaneous correspondence (1839-1857) of George Sumner including letters from Washington Irving, Alexis de Tocqueville, Henry W. Longfellow, William H. Prescott and William E. Gladstone.

The principal figure in these papers is Sarah Madeleine Vinton Dahlgren, whose daughter, Ulrica Dahlgren married Josiah Pierce (1861-1902). More than half the papers consists of family correspondence chiefly for the years 1824-1873. Also in included are sketchbooks, memoirs, genealogical materials, account books, legal records and autographs of Civil War generals and admirals. The correspondence of Josiah Pierce (1827-1913) who was secretary of the U.S. legation in St. Petersburg includes material documenting his service in Russia. Also in the papers is the diary (in Russian) of Ivan Timofieff for the year 1858, with an English translation. The papers of Samuel Finley Vinton, who was congressman from Ohio (1823-1837; 1843-1851) include courtship letters to his fiancée.

The major part of this collection is made up of 58 volumes of logbooks for fifty-one British warships (1808-1840). The remainder of the collection consists of research material for his study of the history of the United States Navy (published 1909). Included are a list of vessels (1775-1907), a list of logbooks (1800-1907) and copies of letters from the archives of the United States Navy (1798-1842). Also included is a volume of records kept ca. 1870 by Horace A. Blanchard concerning the United States frigate Sabine.

Author, diplomat. Diaries, consular papers documenting his service in Italy and miscellaneous personal papers including correspondence with William Dean Howells and Armando Palacio Valdés, notebooks, genealogical materials, subjects files on Maria Bashkirtseff and a few papers of his son, Julian B. Bishop, who died in 1912. William Henry Bishop's diaries, which make up half the collection, are in 127 volumes spanning the years of 1874-1928 and reflect his extensive travels in the United States and Italy. His consular papers contain correspondence, notes, clippings and photographs on political and social conditions in Italy (1903-1910) with material relating to the self-styled Duca di Santa Elisabetta, 1904-1910; the Petrosino murder case, 1904-1912; public security in Sicily, 1907; the Messina earthquakes, 1906-1908; consular relations between Panama and Palermo, 1905; material on immigration from Sicily; and material on the Taraca Expedition in the Philippines. The 2012-M-035 addition to the William Henry Bishop papers include consular material, correspondence, draft manuscripts and notes from 1841 to 1930.

The major figures in these papers are Alfred and Annie O. Tiffany Mitchell, whose correspondence, diaries, writings, financial accounts, photographs and other memorabilia make up the major part of the papers. Of particular interest is a long series of letters from their daughter, Charly Tiffany Mitchell Jeans. During her years at Bryn Mawr College, 1894-1898, her letters describe her education and life there. After her marriage in 1907 to the English philosopher, James Jeans, she wrote of her life in England with particularly graphic letters during the first World War. Nine branches of the family are represented in the remaining papers by scattered items of correspondence, clippings, household accounts, financial papers and assorted memorabilia. The sermons of Alfred Mitchell (1790-1831) make up the largest single portion of this section; the papers of the most prominent family member, Louis Comfort Tiffany, include only a small amount of correspondence, clippings and a drawing. His letters to his sister, Annie O. Mitchell, are in the Mitchell correspondence. The papers also include extensive genealogies, family histories and photographs of the United States and places abroad visited by Alfred Mitchell.

The papers consist of correspondence, writings, printed material, lectures, notebooks, and miscellanea documenting the personal lives and professional careers of members of the Dana family. James Dwight Dana, a prominent American scientist, and his son, Edward Salisbury Dana are two primary figures in the papers.

Correspondence, research materials, clippings, photographs, and reviews of Driver's biography, Tory Radical: The Life of Richard Oastler, published in 1946. Most significant in the papers is a series of eight letters written in 1832 by Oastler to Thomas Daniels, the secretary of the Manchester Short-Time Committee, a letter from Oastler's wife, Mary, and another from Michael Thomas Sadler, the author of the Ten-Hour Bill, to Oastler. Driver's correspondents include Roland H. Bainton, Lewis P. Curtis, Edgar Johnson, Broadus Mitchell, Clinton L. Rossiter, and Hume Wrong.

The papers consist of correspondence relating to the founding of the American School for the Deaf and Dumb in Hartford, Connecticut in 1817 by Laurent Clerc at the invitation of Thomas H. Gallaudet. Included also is a diary in English kept by Clerc during his voyage to the United States from France (1816) together with transcriptions of newspaper accounts of his first address in the United States, newspaper clippings, legal and financial documents, student papers, and memorabilia. There are a few family and personal papers and autobiographical notes by Clerc (1857-1869). Principal correspondents are John Louis Cheverus, Thomas H. Gallaudet, Abbé Sicard, and Roberts Vaux.

Minister and diplomat. Correspondence largely relating to Abbot's service as secretary to Daniel Webster and as an agent of the State Department in England and Canada. Included are 104 letters by Daniel Webster as well as copies of several of his speeches. State Department papers concerning controversies with England (1837-1852), newspaper clippings about Daniel Webster and miscellaneous receipts, inventories and photographs make up the remainder of the papers.

Chiefly correspondence, to or from Mill. Of the 237 letters by Mill, 131 are to his wife, Harriet Hardy Taylor Mill. Twenty-four letters are from Helen Taylor, Mrs. Mill's daughter. In addition there are two volumes with drafts of letters by Mill written between 1851 and 1858 to a variety of recipients. Notable correspondents in the collection are John Austin, Jeremy Bentham, Augustus De Morgan, Isabella Beecher Hooker, George Grote, John Sterling and Edward Livingston Youmans. Other manuscript material includes four pages of his autobiography (dated 1861), his journal of a walking tour through Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Surrey (1828) and several undated fragments, including several pages of medical advice to an unnamed person.

The papers consist of correspondence correspondence, legal and financial documents, printed matter, and other papers of Edwards Pierrepont, attorney, judge, Attorney General of the United States, and minister to Great Britain. Some of the correspondence relates to such questions as Reconstruction, bimetallism, the "whiskey ring" controversy, the Hayes-Tilden election, and the Republican Party. Important correspondents include William Maxwell Evarts, Adelbert Ames, Hamilton Fish, Ulysses S. Grant, William H. Seward, Edwin M. Stanton, and Roscoe Conkling.

The papers consist of correspondence, diaries, notebooks, school notes, and other papers of O.C. Marsh, scientist and first professor of paleontology at Yale and in the United States. Of special interest is the rather extensive correspondence Marsh carried on with many prominent scientists of his time; included are letters from Charles Darwin, Leonard and Thomas Huxley, Simon Newcomb, and Benjamin Silliman Sr. and Jr. Also included are materials relating to Marsh's education at Andover, Yale, and in Germany, family papers, and papers reflecting his involvement with the Cardiff Giant hoax and the Red Cloud controversy.

An artificial collection of Italian manuscript correspondence, writings, and printed material, ca. 1822-1945.

Personal papers, research materials, and autographs collected by Feuillerat in connection with his literary studies. A major portion of the papers consists of material on Paul Bourget, novelist and critic, as well as the brother-in-law of Feuillerat. Included are manuscripts by Bourget and correspondence by and about him. Among the writers of the holograph letters collected by Feuillerat are Jean François Victor Aicard, Paul Claudel, Alfred Stanislaus Langlois Des Essarts, Octave Feuillet, Alexandre Dumas, Ernest Aimée Feydeau, Paul Hervieu, Jean A. A. Jusserand, and Francis Steegmuller.

The papers consist of correspondence, financial papers, and memorabilia of the Hemingway and Hart families.

The largest part of the papers is made up of letters addressed to William D. Ely by young friends from 1837-1847, in which several of the men discuss their careers. Also in the papers are a number of letters (1834-1838) written by Anne Crawford Allen (later his wife) to various members of her family about a visit to Georgia and her view of slavery.

Correspondence, writings, lectures, notes, printed material, and other papers, principally of George Jarvis Brush (1831-1912), mineralogist, geologist, and educator; and of his son-in-law, Louis Valentine Pirsson (1860-1919), also a geologist. There are also papers of Brush's wife, Harriet Silliman Trumbull Brush and of other family members. A good deal of the papers are scientific in nature, with some relating to the early history of the Yale Sheffield Scientific School. Important correspondents include William H. Brewer, Charles F. Chandler, Josiah P. Cooke, Whitman Cross, James Dwight Dana, Timothy Dwight, Charles W. Eliot, Joseph Henry, Lyman Trumbull, Joseph Wharton, and Josiah Dwight Whitney.

The papers consist of correspondence and other papers relating to nineteenth century socialism in England and the United States. Included are two literary manuscripts by William Riley entitled Literary Cranks by One of Them and Radical Jack; copies of periodicals edited by Riley; and letters from Walter Besant, Edward Everett Hale, Rudyard Kipling, Justin McCarthy, Karl Marx, William Rossetti and John Ruskin.

Correspondence, writings, lectures, and other papers of Daniel Coit Gilman, educator, university president, and author. Included are papers regarding Gilman's career at Yale, the University of California, and Johns Hopkins University. Important correspondents include Charles M. Andrews, James Dwight Dana, William Henry Brewer, Timothy Dwight, Benjamin Silliman, Theodore Dwight Woolsey, and Andrew Dickson White.

Correspondence, diaries, notebooks, clippings, printed matter and a draft history of the Richmond Armory which he headed from 1861 to 1862. Included also are notes on machinery and a British patent for small fire-arms.

The papers consist of correspondence, speeches and writings, diaries, photographs, extensive material from the presidential campaign of 1924, and material relating to John W. Davis's law practice and public activities. Correspondence makes up two-thirds of the papers including early letters by Davis to his family and his first wife, and letters while ambassador to Great Britain (1918-1923). The largest part of the correspondence is for the period 1924-1955 and concerns Davis's civic and political activities. Papers relating to his law practice in New York, where he was counsel to J.P. Morgan and Co., and others are separately arranged. His service as Solicitor General of the United States (1913-19180 is documented only by printed matter with his marginalia. Also in the papers are research materials and drafts by William H. Harbaugh for his biography of Davis, published in 1973.

The principal figure is Mary E. Dallaher, a school teacher, who wrote a series of letters to her family while studying music in various convents in France between 1875 and 1879. Additional family correspondence includes letters to Mary Dallaher from her brother Henry while he was mining in the Dakota Territory (1874-1886). Included also are financial and legal papers, among them deeds to property in New Haven, Connecticut, memorabilia, and printed matter from various Catholic institutions in the United States and France.

Correspondence, bills, invoices, notes, writings, clippings and other papers of Joel Sumner Smith. His correspondence includes accounts of his life as a student at Yale and as a teacher of music in a Young Ladies' Seminary in Racine, Wisconsin. Much of the remaining material concerns purchases made for the Yale University Library (especially Russian works). Also included are letters from others to his son, Frederick Sumner Smith.

The papers consist chiefly of notes, manuscripts, documents, minutes of parliamentary committees, pamphlets and other materials collected by Hajo Holborn in connection with research on the drafting of the Weimar constitution. The pamphlets include works on related subjects, such as the German revolution of 1918, the Workers' and Soldiers' Councils, constitutional history and federalism in Germany, territorial questions concerning Silesia and the Saar, and materials on German political parties, including minutes of meetings, leaflets and printed matter from the Deutsche Demokratische Partei (DDP). Some of the DDP material is particularly addressed to women. Also in the papers are essays and reviews by Holborn, teaching materials from his tenure at the Hochschule für Politik in Berlin and Yale University. There is only a small amount of correspondence, largely on professional matters. Important correspondents are Friedrich Meinecke and Alfred Vagts, who also contributed a memoir on Holborn.

The papers consist of correspondence, diaries, memoirs, writings, photographs, memorabilia, and other papers documenting Edward M. House's personal life and political career. The diary details his childhood experiences and also notes political observations (1912-1924). Materials relating to the Paris Peace Conference include minutes of meetings of the Supreme Council and memoranda from various countries presenting claims. Writings include essays, reviews, novels, and other works. Correspondence includes letters to and from Woodrow Wilson, Charles Seymour, American and foreign politicians, and newspaper and political journalists. Also includes DVDs of Godfrey Hodgson's lectures and an interview regarding his biography of House.

The papers consist almost entirely of correspondence between Heinrich Thönges in Steinfurth, Germany and his children in the United States. Included are descriptions of life during the Civil War and addresses to commemorate the Battle of Antietam.

Correspondence, writings, records of astronomical expeditions, diaries, notebooks and scrapbooks of David Peck Todd, astronomer and teacher at Amherst College from 1881 to 1917. Between 1882 and 1914 Todd conducted nine expeditions to various parts of the world to study solar eclipses. The notes, photographs, drawings and memorabilia of these expeditions make up a significant portion of the papers. He was also a fertile inventor, and plans and drawings for many devices, some related to solving technical problems encountered on his expeditions are included in the papers.

The papers consist of correspondence, writings, notes and research materials, clippings, memorabilia, photographs and financial records of William Graham Sumner, a sociologist, professor at Yale University, and advocate of free trade and the gold standard. The correspondence (over 13,000 items) documents many of Sumner's interests including the Yale College curriculum and economic and political issues. It also includes substantive accounts from friends in the South about Reconstruction, the Freedmen's Bureau, and the Tilden-Hayes election. Family correspondence spans the years 1863-1908. There are over 100 letters written by Sumner during the last years of his life to Albert Galloway Keller.

The papers consist of correspondence, notebooks, diaries, lectures, financial records, scrapbooks, subject files, and memorabilia documenting the personal life and professional career of Mabel Loomis Todd. Correspondence and diaries detail Todd's personal attitudes and feelings toward her family, her relationship with William Austin Dickinson, her travels with her husband, David Peck Todd, and other matters. Legal and financial papers document court battles over her status as editor of Emily Dickinson's work. Lectures and subject files detail much of Mrs. Todd's work as a speaker and author, including material on Emily Dickinson and David Peck Todd's eclipse expeditions.

The papers are primarily printed and typescript documents relating to Hugh Bayne's service on international arbitration commissions, some with his marginalia and accompanying notes. His decisions as arbiter include his interpretations of disarmament clauses of the Versailles Treaty (1923) and his opinion on the claims of the Standard Oil Company (1926) and on the claim of Belgium to the treasure of the Order of the Golden Fleece. The remainder of the papers is made up of three volumes of his memoirs, (1870-1943) with photographs, clippings and correspondence pasted in, and the contents of three scrapbooks kept by Bayne while a student at Yale College (1888-1892).

Correspondence, writings and memorabilia almost entirely relating to Chittenden's work as a physiologist and expert on nutrition. Also essays documenting his part in the development at Yale University of the Sheffield Scientific School, which he directed from 1898 to 1922. Important correspondents are Willy Kühne, his professor at the University of Heidelberg, and Ira Remsen, chairman of the Referee Board of Consulting Scientific Experts of the Department of Agriculture, of which Chittenden was a member from 1908 to 1914. Also in the papers are the manuscripts of his autobiography (written in 1936), miscellaneous family papers, diplomas and awards.

The papers consist of family correspondence, autograph albums, diaries, notebooks, financial records, photographs and memorabilia, principally of Leonard Woolsey Bacon, a physician, and of his first wife, Emma Waleska Schneeloch. The largest part of the papers is made up of Bacon's prescription books (1892-1937) containing diagnosis, prescriptions, and name, age and occupation for each patient. Also in the papers are the financial records of his practice (1907-1919) which, together with the prescription books, make an important record of the practice of medicine in New Haven in that period. In the family correspondence is a long series of letters (1886-1892) from Leonard Bacon to Emma Schneeloch during their courtship. Much of the correspondence is made up of letters from various members of the Bacon family who were opposed to the marriage. Emma Schneeloch sang with her sister, Emilie, with a band that traveled to the West in 1891. A diary kept by Emilie of this trip is in the papers. Also included are student papers from Vassar (ca. 1917-1921) and other memorabilia kept by Emma Waleska Bacon Evans, daughter of Leonard and Emma Bacon.

The papers consist of correspondence, professional papers, writings, notes taken as a student in Germany, and teaching materials of Gustav Gruener. Several hundred letters in the correspondence were written from Austria and Germany between 1919 and 1928 in thanks for packages and money sent by Gruener to friends and relatives abroad. The letters provide a description of the economic crisis in these countries and the effect on the academic community. Comments on politics discuss the end of the Weimar Republic, the rise of Hitler and the dangers of communism and nationalism. Among those writing are Ernst Mayer, Friedrich von der Leyen, Max Friedländer and Hanns Oertel. A large part of the papers document Gruener's career as professor of German and ultimately chairman of the department of Germanic languages at Yale University. Among his Yale correspondents are Arthur T. Hadley, Anson P. Stokes, Wilbur L. Cross, William Walker, Russell Chittenden, Henry S. Graves, James R. Angell and Charles Seymour. Included also are manuscripts and notes by Gruener in the field of German literature.

The papers consist of approximately 500 letters written by Lester Bradner to his future wife Edith Mitchell Murray of Flushing, New York. During their courtship Bradner spent two years (1891-1893) studying at the University of Berlin, after taking a Ph.D. at Yale University in 1889. His letters describe his life both in New York and Berlin, as well as his summer travels in Europe and the United States. He also discusses his religious beliefs and the ministry.

Correspondence and sermons relating to David J. Edwards' religious work for the American and English Union Church in Leipzig, Germany, and for various churches in the United States and Brussels, Belgium.

Chiefly correspondence (1917-1960) between Leffingwell and colleagues in banking and the legal profession, and with important American and British government officials on contemporary economic and political events. Following his service in the Department of the Treasury (1917) where he helped to float the Liberty Loan, Leffingwell continued to correspond with his colleagues, S. Parker Gilbert and Albert Rathbone, as well as Carter Glass, Secretary of the Treasury (1918-1920). As a partner in the firm of J.P. Morgan from 1923 on, he received reports on economic conditions from officers of the firm in London, Paris, and Mexico. There is also a voluminous correspondence (1935-1948) with Thomas W. Lamont, his chief at the bank. He was asked for advice by every president from Woodrow Wilson to Dwight D. Eisenhower, with the exception of Coolidge. Among these letters, his correspondence with Franklin Delano Roosevelt is the most extensive. He was also consulted by eight secretaries of the Treasury and other government officials. Important journalists with whom he corresponded regularly are Walter Layton, editor of the British Economist, Walter Lippmann, and Morris Ernst. The papers also contain memoranda and speeches (1919-1958), photographs, and memorabilia.

Diaries, correspondence, writings, clippings and approximately fifty photographs of family and friends of Andrew Watt Warden. Warden's correspondence with family and friends centers on his interest in social issues and on their responses to both world wars, particularly World War II.

Autograph collection of Dr. S. C. G. Watkins of Montclair, N.J. The collection consists mainly of letters (typed and holograph) to Watkins from various important persons in politics, industry, government, and the arts in the early 20th century.

The papers consist of a series of automobile chassis dynamometer tests conducted at Yale (1916-1932) by Edwin Hoyt Lockwood and material relating to the performance of early automobiles.

The papers consist of writings and research materials dealing with Russian history, particularly the Romanov dynasty, Rasputin, and the origins of the Russian Revolution. Also included are materials on Peter the Great and the Jews in the Russian revolutionary movement.

Correspondence, writings, speeches, notes and clippings on European political affairs and biographical material of Kiderlen-Wächter, German diplomat and Secretary of State. The most significant and largest portion of his correspondence and notes is that to his mistress, Hedwig Heting Kypke. These papers form a veritable diary of his life and of events in the Foreign Office from 1891 to 1912. Other correspondents include Wilhelm II, Bethmann-Hollweg, von Bulow, Eulenburg-Hertefeld, Marschall von Bieberstein and Alfred Zimmerman.

The papers consist of correspondence, writings, research materials, and autograph letters relating to the literary work of William Appleton Aiken on the life of Daniel Fitch, second Earl of Nottingham. Also included are Aiken's personal papers including his diaries as an army intelligence officer in the Middle East during World War II and an exhibition scrapbook prepared by the Overseas Branch of the Office of War Information.

The papers consist of correspondence, notes, writings, lectures, photographs, and miscellanea documenting the personal life and professional career of Henry E. Sigerist. His student and teaching activities, writings on the history of medicine, concern for public health policies in the United States and Asia, cold war political interests, and other professional and personal concerns are documented in the papers. Sigerist corresponded with several prominent figures in the field of medicine. These papers form part of the Contemporary Medical Care and Health Policy Collection.

Fisk's (1870-1944) book on the government and legal system of the United States, published in German as Kunde 端ber Amerika (1944). Baldwin, Pulitzer Prize winning journalist and military affairs reporter and editor for the New York Times from 1929-1968, and editor for Reader's Digest, 1968-1976. The papers relate to Baldwin's work and interests as a journalist and author and include correspondence with many high-ranking officers of the armed services, government officials, and writers and historians, as well as other members of the staff of the New York Times and Reader's Digest. Of particular interest are the subject files of printed materials and clippings which Baldwin collected and maintained for his own use. Included in these files are a number of important reports, transcriptions, and other items, some of which are not easily obtainable elsewhere.

Although records relating to his career are relatively scanty, two manuscript drafts of his autobiography, Pioneer Progress, are among the writings. The papers consist of official, personal, and business correspondence, articles, speeches, clippings, recordings, photographs, and other papers of Arthur Bliss Lane, career diplomat, public servant, and lecturer. The papers reflect Lane's diplomatic career from the time he entered the service in Rome (1916), until his resignation as Ambassador to Poland (1947), and contain correspondence from international political figures. Also included are materials relating to his work on behalf of Poland, anti-communism, and the Republican Party.

Also included are voluminous mail from members of her reading public and memorabilia, both objects sent by admirers and items collected by her on her travels. The death of Charles Lindbergh in 1974 is documented by mail from friends, members of the public and organizations. Anne Morrow Lindbergh's writings make up the largest part of the papers and include her diaries (1929-1972, 1982-1988), drafts of her books, working notebooks, speeches, articles and stories, and published reviews of her work. Also in the papers are printed copies of her publications. Her personal correspondence with friends and family runs over many years. Correspondence with friends includes letters exchanged with Anne Carrel, Harry Guggenheim, Corliss Lamont, Harold and Nigel Nicolson, Vita Sackville-West, Igor Sikorsky, Truman and Katherine Smith, Helen and Kurt Wolff, Jean Stafford and Mary Ellen Chase. Her family correspondence contains letters exchanged by Anne Morrow Lindbergh and members of her immediate family as well as members of the Morrow, Lindbergh and Cutter families.

The papers consist of correspondence, political reports, papers relating to the Paris Peace Conference, and printed materials of William H. Buckler, diplomat and archaeologist. The bulk of the papers relate to Buckler's work as a member of the American Commission to Negotiate Peace in Paris, 1918-1919, although there is material relating to his other diplomatic duties as well as his work as an archaeologist, especially the excavations at Sardis (1910-1914) and Anatolia (1922-1930)

His correspondence is largely political, particularly during his tenure as chief correspondent of the London Times in the United States (1910-1920) and as representative of the Ministry of Information (1917-1918). As a member of United Kingdom delegations to various international conferences (1921-1934) his memoranda and other writings offer a view of European political affairs. From 1939-1945 he was Head of the Ministry of Information Office for the Southern Region. In addition to his newspaper articles, he wrote for magazines, lectured in the United States (1936-1939) and wrote four books on international politics. In the papers are printed copies and drafts of articles, drafts of two books and a draft for an unidentified book. The correspondence of Florence S. Willert, his wife, includes forty-five letters from Eleanor Roosevelt. His correspondents include D. D. Braham, Herbert Croly, Geoffrey Dawson, Lord Northcliffe, H. W. Steed, Sir Campbell Stuart, Robert Wilberforce, Evelyn Wrench.

The papers consist of correspondence, reports, and other material relating to political and diplomatic affairs in Turkey and the Middle East from 1908 to 1921, particularly in relation to interests of the German Foreign Office in that area. Papers of the naval attache Hans Humann form the bulk of the material. Included are his correspondence with Ernst Jäckh (1911-1918) and reports from Constantinople (1914-1916), many in the form of telegrams and extracts of official correspondence, to the chiefs of the German admiralty and of the naval administration. Humann, friend and foster brother of Enver Pasha, was in contact with him regarding Turkish national and international issues. Enver Pasha's letters from the Tripolitanian war (1912-1913) and a draft of his unpublished autobiography accompany these papers. Other papers include the Grand Vizier Talât Pasha's unpublished autobiography as well as some correspondence with Ernst Jäckh; Baron Oppenheim's designs for the Holy War of the Islamic world from India to Morocco, 1915; information about native Moslems used by the German Intelligence Service; the "Armenian Massacres" of 1915-1917, as reported to the German Ambassador, Baron Wangenheim, in Constantinople, by observers in Asia Minor, and by him to the Foreign Office in Berlin; and a collection of political posters of the Young Turkish Revolution of 1908.

Correspondence, printed matter, photographs and memorabilia reflecting the friendship of Mary Geran with members of the Greek royal family and with members of the German nobility. The largest number of letters are from Lilo Scholz, Marguerite, Landgräfin of Hesse, Grand Duchess Helen of Russia and from Sophia, princess of Greece.

Correspondence from civilians and former army officers in Germany relating to Gordon's dissertation: The Reichswehr and the German Republic, 1919-1926 (Yale University, 1953). The letters from the civilians written between 1946 and 1951 discuss their recollections of the Nazi movement and contemporary economic and political conditions in Germany. The letters on the German army, responding to a questionnaire sent by Gordon are from Germany army officers, a British general, a German member of the French resistance and others with information on the army and foreign office personnel policies. Also included are correspondence, documents, and writings relating to the Hitler Putsch of 1923, to the Beer Hall Putsch, and to the Hamburg KDP Revolt of 1923.

Correspondence, papers, writings and miscellanea of Greville Rickard, a graduate of Yale University, 1912, Sheffield Scientific School.

The major part of the papers is made up of a nearly complete collection of Ernst Toller's plays printed in German and in English translation, together with copies of his articles (1917-1939) which were gathered from newspapers and periodicals from many countries by John M. Spalek, editor of Toller's works. Also assembled by Spalek and added to the papers are articles, books, and dissertations (1922-1972) about Toller in both German and English. The personal papers stem from the last five years of Toller's life and consist of manuscripts for eight plays written between 1934 and 1938, typescripts of short stories in English and German, speeches, memorabilia and photographs. A small amount of correspondence (1933-1939) is largely concerned with his Spanish Relief Project, devoted to raising funds to alleviate the consequences of the Civil War in Spain. Notable correspondents include Hewlett Johnson, Dean of Canterbury, Pablo Picasso, H. G. Wells, and Frederick Wertham.

Notes, manuscripts, and transcript copies of Alexandre Polovtsoff's (1867-1934) writings after his emigration from Russia in 1918. Included are autobiographical materials, articles on Russian art, the imperial palaces, and Russian historical figures; also, translations of the Journal de Voyage en Russie by Francisco de Miranda, and The Curse of Wit by A. S. Griboedov.

Correspondence, reports, and other papers of Pierre Jay, banker and Deputy Agent General for Reparations in Berlin from December, 1926 to May, 1930. These papers deal primarily with the Dawes Plan for collecting reparations from Germany following World War I and consist mainly of reports, minutes, and printed materials related to the work of the Economic Service section of the Transfer Committee.

An artificial collection of German pamphlets, 1921-1945, including material on such topics as: national socialism, armed forces, foreign relations, propaganda, and postwar politics.

As a refugee from Hitler, he was outspoken on political issues and attempted to aid fellow scholars similarly uprooted. A portion of the correspondence reveals his efforts on their behalf and expands on his political views. Other letters discuss university policies, including problems at Yale University, and foundation grants for scholars. Among Goetze's important correspondents are William F. Albright, Kurt Bittel, Hans Ehelolf, Jacob J. Finkelstein, Johannes Friedrich, Hans G. Güterbock, Thorkild Jacobsen, Carl H. Kraeling, Samuel N.
