An artificial collection that documents the history of the village of Ivoryton, a village within the town of Essex, CT. Ivoryton was a factory town built around Comstock, Cheney & Co., an ivory processing plant and the primary employer until the 1980's.

His career has included Poetry teacher (Lenox, MA, 1969-1972), editor of the Bookstore Press (1972-1977), vice-president of Sunstone Press (Santa Fe, NM, 1979-1983); English teacher at the Santa Fe Preparatory School (1983-1987).

Papers of Gwen Reed, a Hartford tobacco worker turned actress, educator, and community worker. Included are papers from her involvement with Community Players, Hartford Stage Company, and Playtime for Tots. Theater programs and scripts constitute about a third of the collection. A valuable source of information is Reed's scrapbook from her time with the Charles Gilpin Players (1936-1939), a beneficiary of the Federal Theater Project. Reed is also well known for having portrayed Aunt Jemima throughout New England during a 17-year career with the Quaker Oats Company. Additional material includes photographs, a video tape from WFSB Channel 3, and plaques.

The collection contains material compiled by Father Peter F. O'Brien on twentieth century African American cultural figures. The collection consists chiefly of subject files on prominent mid-century artists, authors, and performers, including stage and screen actors, singers, and dancers. Individuals covered include: James Baldwin, Paul Robeson, Antonio Salemme, Ethel Waters, Mabel Mercer, and Thelma Carpenter, among others. Files contain printed materials, such as newspaper clippings and programs and playbills for productions, letters, and photographs.

Autograph manuscript music includes spirituals arranged for solo voice or chorus; The Negro Speaks of Rivers, Songs of the Seasons, Three Dream Portraits, and other songs on texts by Langston Hughes; songs on texts by Edna St. Vincent Millay and other poets; and musicals and songs with lyrics by Janice Lovoos, some with related correspondence. Other papers consist of a scrapbook containing photographs, clippings, and ephemera, most circa 1928-1930, some relating to Lincoln University, Pennsylvania, and Lawrence Richardson; and two books containing biographical information about Bonds and analysis of her music: Mildred Denby Green, Black Women Composers: A Genesis (Boston: Twayne Publishers, 1983), and Alice Tischler, Fifteen Black American Composers: A Bibliography of Their Works (Detroit: Information Coordinators, 1981).
