The papers, dating from 1894-1971, primarily document the activities of Edward Huntington Smith and his daughter, Helen Huntington Smith in the United States and China. The Smiths were a family of Congregational missionaries in China, 1901-1950, primarily in Ing Tai and Fuzhou (Foochow). Educated at Amherst College and Hartford Theological Seminary, Edward Huntington Smith devoted nearly 50 years of his life to running an orphanage, raising funds, and promoting Christian education in Ing Tai, Fujian (Fukien), China. His wife, Grace W. Thomas Smith, educated at Tabor Academy and Wheelock College, both in Massachusetts, served as a kindergarten teacher in the United States and China. Their daughter, Helen Huntington Smith, earned degrees from Mount Holyoke College, Union Theological Seminary, and Columbia University. Appointed to China by the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, she taught, participated in relief work for orphans and destitute students, and worked in cooperatives and in counselling. She served as Director of Women's Work of the Ohio Conference of the United Church of Christ and Research Consultant for the China Records Project at the Yale Divinity School Library. Another daughter, Eunice Elizabeth Smith Bishop, served at various kindergarten training schools in China, and at the China Nutritional Aid Council studying the soy bean.

Governor John Dempsey appointed a nine-member committee in December 1963 to recommend action to improve library services to the state of Connecticut.

Founded in 1964 by Robert Hawley and Stevens van Strum, the Oyez Press initially produced a series of poetry broadsides by such notable figures as Robert Duncan, Robert Creeley, William Everson, Gary Snyder, and Charles Olson. Although van Strum left in 1968, Hawley continued on with the press in his spare time, eventually publishing over 80 books in addition to numerous keepsakes and broadsides, featuring authors such as David Meltzer, Josephine Miles, Lew Welch, Philip Lamantia, and many others. Oyez publications were highly regarded for the simplicity and elegance of their design; many were produced in collaboration with printer Graham Mackintosh.

This collection reflects the life and works of Paul Yu-Kuang Sun, a surviving prisoner of the White Terror in Taiwan from the mid-twentieth century. This collection was put together by his daughter Kang-I Sun Chang to include his writings, audio and visual copies of a selection of Sun's sermons and lectures including one at Yale University, a large selection of Sun's correspondence in both English and Chinese, and some biographical materials including published works about Paul Sun.

The A. Poulin Papers and BOA Editions Records provide evidence of the personal and professional life of American poet A. Poulin and the publishing company he founded, BOA Editions. The papers document Poulin's career as a poet, editor, translator, and publisher and consist of correspondence, manuscripts, books, business papers, photographs, videotapes, computer disks, and printed material concerning BOA Editions. Correspondents include Graywolf Press, Lucille Clifton, Anne He?bert, David Ignatow, Li-Young Lee, John Logan, Peter Makuck, Bertrand Mathieu, Anthony Piccione, Katerina Angelake?-Rouk, Louis Simpson, and W. D. Snodgrass, among others. The archive provides evidence of the founding and early work of BOA Editions and sheds light into the American not-for-profit publishing industry in the later twentieth-century.

The Vicki Hearne Papers consist of correspondence, writings, personal papers, photographs, audiocassettes, and clippings that document the development of her writing, from her works of poetry in the 1970s, through the books and articles she wrote in defense of dogs at the turn of the twenty-first century. Her writings reveal the connection between her work as an animal trainer and as an author and poet, both vocations informed by her readings and interpretation of philosophers including Plato, Nietzsche, and Wittgenstein. Drafts of many of her works of poetry, non-fiction, and her book of fiction reveal the evolution of the works, and notes and comments by editors regarding works submitted for publication illustrate the nature of her relationship with her publishers. Letters from colleagues and friends, particularly her mentor, John Hollander, provide insight into the support she received from those individuals.

The Connecticut Medical Society was incorporated in 1792. From its inception, until 1893, the Society was responsible for licensing physicians. Now known as the Connecticut State Medical Society, it exists as a voluntary non-profit organization for scientific and educational purposes.

The collection contains correspondence, research and teaching files, and personal papers documenting the life of American academic Charles T. Davis. Correspondents feature literary scholars and African-American artists, writers, and cultural figures, including Doris Alexander, Anthony Appiah, Amiri Baraka, Romare Bearden, John Blassingame, Michel Fabre, Leon Forrest, Athol Fugard, Henry Louis Gates, Leon Higginbotham, Ishmael Reed, Jean Toomer, and others. Correspondents also include colleagues and students. Research and Teaching Files contain files documenting Davis's professional activity as an academic at various institutions from the 1950s through 1970s. Research files include notes and subject files on 19th and 20th century writers and African-American history, literature, and culture. Teaching files include course and lecture notes, writings by Davis and others, and administrative files. Personal papers consists of various other materials, including family papers, audiovisual material, and military and academic records.

The Post-War Planning Board, authorized by an Act of the General Assembly of June 2, 1943, was established to study problems of post-war readjustment and reconversion in the state and formulate plans to deal with them.
