The records consist of correspondence, subject files, and committee meeting minutes documenting the administrations of the following provosts of Yale: William A. Brown, acting (1919-1920); Williston Walker (1920-1922); Wilbur L. Cross, acting (1922-1923); Henry Solon Graves (1923-1927); Charles Seymour (1928-1937); Edgar S. Furniss (1937-1958); Norman Sydney Buck (1958-1961); Kingman Brewster, Jr., designate (1961-1963); and Charles Henry Taylor, Jr., acting (1963-1964). The records also include copies of minutes of the Yale Corporation.

Silvain van Praet papers, 1914-1918

Abstract Or Scope

Principally a manuscript diary kept in English in twelve school notebooks by Silvain van Praet, a member of the Ostend (Belgium) city government, from the day of the German occupation of Ostend (1914 October 14) until its liberation (1918 October 17). It was concealed in a hole in the wall of the Maison Communal. There is also a typescript copy of the manuscript (568 p.) and several related documents.

Gordon Auchincloss papers, 1914-1951

Abstract Or Scope

The papers consist of correspondence, a diary, memoranda, and printed material largely relating to Gordon Auchincloss's position as assistant counselor in the State Department, 1917, and to his position as secretary to Colonel E. M. House at the armistice negotiations and the Paris Peace Conference, with some material on personal affairs. The diary lists his daily activities between 1914 and 1920, including many summaries of conversations, and with a retrospective entry on his first meeting with Colonel House in 1909. The subject files include memoranda and printed matter on the Peace Conference, American foreign policy and other political matters.

Thomas Day Thacher papers, 1893-1989, bulk 1914-1950

Abstract Or Scope

Correspondence, memoranda, legal documents, reports, minutes of meetings, speeches, printed matter, photographs and memorabilia of Thomas Day Thacher, judge and political figure in New York City. The papers include significant material relating to his activities as solicitor-general, to the New York City charter of 1936, and legal papers from his period on the New York Court of Appeals. There is also considerable documentation of his service on the boards of various professional and educational institutions. Correspondents include Dean Acheson, Thomas E. Dewey, Felix Frankfurter, Lloyd Garrison, Herbert Hoover, Fiorello La Guardia, Raymond Robbins, and Henry L. Stimson.

Northwest Child Welfare Club records, 1914-1959

Abstract Or Scope

Originally organized as the Mothers Neighborhood Circle, it became the Northwest Child Welfare Club in 1936. The Club attempted to "promote child welfare in home, school, church and community . . . raise standards of home life. . . secure adequate laws for the care and protection of women and children."

Gilbert A. Harrison papers relating to Thornton Wilder, 1939-1975

The collection contains research files, interviews, correspondence, writings, and other materials relating to Gilbert A. Harrison's biography of Thornton Wilder, The Enthusiast: A Life of Thornton Wilder (New Haven: Ticknor & Fields, 1983). Harrison's research files, which include notes, photocopies of correspondence and writings, and clippings, make up the bulk of the collection. In addition to the research files, the collection includes: sound recordings of interviews with members of the Wilder family and others, such as Alfred Hitchcock and Lillian Gish; correspondence with Wilder family, scholars, and publishers; a corrected draft of the biography and reviews; and other materials, including biographical information, a copy of Wilder's will, and reference photographs.
