Abstract Or Scope
The collection documents the apartheid system in South Africa and the different stages of the liberation struggle which was instrumental in bringing about the decline of the system. The collection consists of printed materials such as newsclippings, publications, reports, press releases, newsletters, pamphlets and newspapers of the South African government, parliamentary parties, non-parliamentary groups such as the African National Congress, and American and other foreign groups. Also included in the collection are posters which illustrate the inequities perpetrated by the South African government and the resulting resistance.

The collection consists of papers concerning Elias Boudinot, an Indian whose original name was Galagina, or Buck Oowatie, and who became editor of the "Cherokee Phoenix", New Echota, Cherokee Nation. Early correspondence relates chiefly to Boudinot's marriage to Harriet Gold, and the Gold family controversy over intermarriage with an Indian. Other correspondence relates to the dispute between the Cherokee Nation and the state of Georgia, the Supreme Court decision of 1832, President Jackson's refusal to halt Georgia's annexation of the Cherokee Nation and Boudinot's support of John Ridge, who favored withdrawal of the Cherokee Nation to the West.

Chiefly correspondence relating to Lambert's activities concerning the Volstead Act and the Prohibition Amendment. Among his correspondents are Senator Hiram Bingham, Benjamin N. Cardozo, and Dr. Robert Lewis. Speeches, writings, newspaper clippings, and printed matter are also included in the papers. Other papers relate to research on scarlet fever and other medical subjects. Reflecting Lambert's book-collecting hobby are letters from the Bibliophile Society, the Grolier Club, and a letter dated 1821 to Mme. Eliza Bowen Jumel presented to Lambert as a gift. Also in the papers is the autograph album of Samuel W. Lambert, Jr. (Yale University, Class of 1919).

The papers, consisting of the personal and official papers of George Foster Emmons and George Thornton Emmons, document the history of the United States Navy in the nineteenth century and of early ethnological research on the native peoples of Alaska. The papers contain extensive correspondence of naval officers and the Emmons's family, ship's journals and captain's letterbooks, naval orders and reports, research notes and publications on Alaska, scrapbooks, and artwork by the Emmons family.
