Rutherston encloses a check and discusses possible times to come judge his portion of the show. He further asks that he might no longer be included on the list of prize givers, as he feels he should devote any money to his own students.

Korda expresses his gratitude for the offer to open the Students' Group exhibition but, as he will be away "for the purpose of making shots in a picture," he cannot accept.

Alice Woolner's hand is difficult to decipher. She appears to be writing on behalf of Thomas Woolner to arrange a meeting with J.F. Lewis on January 29th, at the Athenaeum.

Woolner appears to inquire about the health of J.F. Lewis, noting "this severe weather I fear is very bad for your invalid."

"March 29th, 1914. Dear Mr. Hewitt, Thank you very much for searching out the letters of my father and taking so much trouble about the matter. It will be very nice to see you again if you can manage to bring the letters but I should like to know when you mean to come as I might be out - we are leaving this place on Monday April 6th and tomorrow we are out all the afternoon - With our kind regards, I am Sincerely yours, Amy Woolner."

Saying that if he publishes a second edition of the book, he will find a more accurate and detailed account of the life of Thomas Banks in the Gentleman's Magazine for 1807 or 1808. With some anecdotes.

Burne-Jones jokingly chastises Price for his last "skinny" letter and promises that "now [he]'ll be revenged" in his response. Burne-Jones describes at length how he spends his time in the River Wye area, which he says is like "Elysium." He describes his daily routine of walking in the countryside, reading and going to the cathedral. He says in his time in the area he has "endured two" parties and complains about the questioning he receives from guests, commenting "girls are such -- hm -- hang 'em they do quiz so, and I [Burne-Jones] make such a capital subject." Burne-Jones asks Price how he is finding reading "Fasti" but admits that he himself has begun the book. He states that, on the "urgent orders of [sic] eminent physician," he is returning home in the next week. He asks his friend if he might see him upon his arrival at Worcester. Burne-Jones ends his letter: "I would have sent you a long illustrated letter, if you had behaved like a gentleman to me, but as it is: good bye." In a postscript, he notes "Oh I have fallen in with such cant, but thank heavens I am still alive, aren't [?] you glad - eating sweetmeats till you burst."

Burne-Jones opens by observing that, "like Mahomet of old", Price "finding the mountain won't come to [him]" has "gone to the mountain" and written to Burne-Jones. He offers Price a "free pardon" for not having done so earlier. Burne-Jones accepts Price's congratulations on the "issue of my 'little go'" but notes his tardiness.

"Dearest Oldie[?] So disappointed & sorry that[?] my reason against Friday is that I have a sitter that day, and shall be in extreme misery as I am always on these occasions - if Thursday would do as well for you I would […] - or today but if Tuesday is your only day be sure & come. Ever your loving Ned."

Burne-Jones is working on a "little head of Paolo in the Ducal Pal[ace]" for Ruskin and is anxious about the quality. (Fiona Macarthy has identified this to be a study from Veronese's Thanksgiving for the Victory of Lepanto in the Sala del Collegio. See Macarthy, The Last Pre-Raphaelite: Edward Burne-Jones and the Victorian Imagination, (Cambridge: Harvard University Press, 2012), 144.) Burne-Jones asks Ruskin to stay in Milan and not to visit "the mountain" (presumably the Alps). Burne-Jones describes his encounter with Gentile Bellini's painting of St. Mark (St. Mark Preaching in Alexandria, 1504-7) and his amazement over its detail: "it is quite as exact as a photograph, with colour besides." Burne-Jones writes of the restorations at St. Mark's: "all the R[ight] side is covered up and sealed off, it is so miserable." Burne-Jones worries that the Bellini painting soon "might be the only record of that 7th heaven." Burne-Jones ends his letter to Ruskin with, "Goodbye, of course Georgie [Georgiana Burne-Jones] who is madly in love with you sends love. We have endearing names for you which wild horses would not extort from us in confession. Ned. "

Burne-Jones writes that (John William) Inchbold has arrived, bringing Ruskin's letter. Burne-Jones remarks upon his copies made for Ruskin: "four rotten little sketches; one of a head in the Veronese Triumph at the Ducal Palace, one of the Bacchus head of Tintoret (as nearly original size as I could guess), one of St. Catherine, and one of the Harem or Marriage of Cana. They really are so far more faithful than those I did under your eye, for you frightened me, you did." Burne-Jones describes a trip to Torcello: "Cat [Georgiana] and I went early to Torcello and confided much poetic sentiment to each other." Despite their enjoyment, Burne-Jones writes of his and Georgiana's homesickness.

Lear writes to Fields with condolences for the death of her husband, James Thomas Fields. He mentions that he has recently received several papers describing Fields's life, and he asks that she convey her thanks to the people who sent them (though he is not sure who that is). Lear closes his letter, writing, "you have the memories of golden hours passed with him who is gone for a time. So that in writing these lines I feel less sad than I might do in many similar cases."

Lear writes to his sister Ann, from "the desert: outside the walls of Suez." He begins with a lengthy discussion of camel travel, pleasant as, "you are lifted up on the long necked monster--& away you go just as if on a rocking chair." And yet they are quite irritable: "when I put the vegetable within a yard of him [Lear's camel], he yells & grunts as if I were killing him….If you try to make them go faster—they grown: if you stop them or try to go slower—they growl also." He describes the tents he stays in—very comfortable—as well as his hope to see pilgrims on their way to Mecca. Lear expresses his appreciation for the desert, writing that "these symptoms of civilization [i.e., beer, etc.] rather spoil the lonely character of the wide desert." The letter spans multiple days, and later on Lear gives descriptions of his Arab travelling companions: he praises Ibrahim as sharp, quick, and a good cook; and says "2 are 'blackymoors'—(but you know I never liked blackies, though you did make me walk round that chimneysweeper 33 years ago.)" Lear ends up missing the pilgrims to Mecca, and instead travels elsewhere, through mixed weather. He intersperses his account with references to scripture, such as that "it is not known how the Israelites came up to Mt. Sinai—but perhaps by Wady Feiran." Lear references a "curious dance—but I must describe that at some other time," and a visit to Mt. Sinai. He ends his letter near Suez, mentioning that he hopes to be in Jerusalem soon and that, "you would not know me if you saw me, as I have a beard not as well as Mustaches." He includes instructions to send the letter, or perhaps something else enclosed, to a Robert A. Hornby, Esq. The letter includes a tiny sketch of several figures and a camel.

Includes another unsigned and undated note, in a different hand, indicating that the manuscripts originally stored in the envelope (items 3a(2-7) in the present collection) should be saved for future generations.

Two letters written on different days and sent together to Eva from her Aunt. The first letter, written on Monday, mentions that the "millionaires got tired of North [illegible] and have left it to their servants." The second letter, written on Thursday, mentions Temple Church and the "full length figures of Crusaders in brown marble.... The woman said that they had been hidden away for 300 years."

Sends the children's Christmas cards and hope that they do not object to getting them so soon.
