Collections

The collections consists of artwork, manuscripts, correspondence, and other material relating to William Horace Littlefield's exhibition "Portrait Drawings of Poets, and Their Manuscripts" (1942). The bulk of the collection is comprised of the original portrait drawings and mounted autograph and typescript manuscripts of American and British poets displayed in the exhibit. According to an artist note found in the collection, "the drawings are portrait heads in pencil on grey-green paper, modelled in white and grey, the medium being water in oil tempera. Each is signed and dated by poet and artist." Correspondence includes letters from poets responding to Littlefield's request to sit for a portrait, as well as more general correspondence. Other material includes writings by Littlefield and printed material related to the exhibit.

Miscellaneous letters by William Howard Taft, two speeches (one on strikes, the other on liberty under the law) and a colored pen and ink drawing by Sir Francis Carruthers Gould, entitled "Ex-President Taft in Retirement." Among the letters the most important was written to Colonel J.C. Hemphill from the White House, July 28, 1911 and discusses Senator Robert M. La Follette's attempt to introduce protectionist legislation on wool. In a number of letters in 1917 Taft writes to classmates of his Yale College class of 1878 to raise money for a special fund for their fortieth reunion. Also included are copies of notebooks of lectures and other teaching materials (1913-1916) kept while he was Kent Professor at the Yale Law School. A student essay, "The Third Term Question," circa 1874-1875 is included in the papers.

This collection details experience of William H. Phillips as he serve in U.S. Army Special forces during the Vietnam War. The collection includes video oral history interview, and personal documents.

This collection documents the thought and work of William H. Poteat, a Yale Divinity School graduate who taught at Duke University from 1960 to 1987. The material was gathered by Walter B. Mead, who contacted former students and colleagues of Poteat, asking them to provide writings and correspondence of Poteat that document his contributions to the field of philosophy of religion.

This collection documents the professional work of William Hurlin, who served as pastor for various Baptist churches in New England and was also involved in Baptist work on the state level, particularly in New Hampshire.

The papers consist of correspondence relating to Dunham's research and writing as a professor of history and chairman of the department at Yale University and his political activity as a consultant to the Central Intelligence Agency. Correspondents include Joseph T. Curtis, Lewis Perry Curtis, K. Harvard Drake, Wallace Notestein, George Wilson Pierson, Frederick Bernays Weiner, and Louis Booker Wright.

The papers consist of correspondence, printed materials, personal papers, and photographs of William H. Wright of Chicago, Illinois, documenting the mining industry in Washington State's St. Helens Mining District during the first decades of the twentieth century. The bulk of the material is correspondence relating to investments that William and his wife Ella made in southwestern Washington, and includes materials documenting stockholder relations with specific Washington and Oregon mining corporations. The papers span the years 1897 to 1954, and include letters addressed to Wright's wife, in-laws, and son.
