Collections

This collection describes the service related experiences and military combat of Frank Joseph Niedermayer during World War II. The collection contains video oral history interview, service records, photographs, and military publications. The materials, which date mainly from 1943 thru 1947, provide evidence of American troop training, deployment, and combat activity, as well as U.S. military moral and courage.

The collection consists of photograph albums, loose photographs, and memorabilia compiled by Frank Kellogg Smith that document his travels, predominately in western and central Europe, southern and eastern Africa, and the southern Pacific region, primarily from 1898-1922. Locations in Europe include Azerbaijan, Belgium, Channel Islands, France, Georgia, Great Britain (consisting of trips to England and Scotland), Hungary, Malta, Netherlands, Romania, Russia, Switzerland, and Ukraine. Locations in Africa include Egypt, Kenya, Madeira Islands, Mozambique, Rhodesia (Zambia and Zimbabwe), Somalia, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Yemen, and Zanzibar, as well as Victoria Falls and the Nile River. Locations in the Pacific include Australia, Canada, Fiji, Hawaii, New Zealand, Samoa, and the United States of America, which consist of views in Arizona, California, and New Mexico.

The papers include letters from Sanders' parents describing missionary work in Sri Lanka (Ceylon), correspondence and personal diaries of Sanders, writings, genealogical material, and photographs. There is also documentation related to Sanders' uncle, Henry Martyn Knight, who was the founder of the Connecticut School for Imbeciles. The son of ABCFM missionaries to Sri Lanka (Ceylon), Frank Knight Sanders (1861-1933) taught at Jaffna College, Sri Lanka (Ceylon) from 1882 to 1886. He was on the faculty of the Yale Divinity School from 1891 to 1907, serving as Dean from 1901 to 1905. He was President of Washburn College in Topeka, Kansas from 1908 to 1914 and Director of Missionary Preparation for the Foreign Missions Conference of North America from 1914 to 1927.

The collection provides documentation of American Methodist mission work in China, particularly in Fujian Province, and in Korea. The Ohlingers were educational missionaries and pioneers in the field of translation and publication for the church in China. Franklin Ohlinger was born in Ohio in 1845. He served as a missionary under the Methodist Episcopal Church Foreign Mission Board beginning in 1870, based in Fuzhou, Fujian Province. He was a founder of the Union Theological School and the Anglo-Chinese College in Fuzhou. In 1887 the Ohlingers were reassigned to Korea due to conflicts with missionary colleagues in China. Following the deaths of their two younger children in Korea, the Ohlingers returned to the U.S. and Franklin returned to China as an independent missionary in 1894. He started an orphanage in Antau and was reinstated as a Methodist missionary in 1897. Ohlinger was involved in educational and literary work until his death in 1919.

The records consist of correspondence, subject files, and related materials concerning Yale Corporation affairs, scholarships and prizes, honorary degrees, and other activities administered by the secretary's office during the tenure of Franklin B. Dexter, 1869-1899.

Chiefly working papers, i.e. correspondence, documents and printed matter, collected for the preparation of his Biographical Sketches of the Graduates of Yale College (published 1885-1912) and the annual Obituary Record of Yale College. The remainder consists of professional correspondence and other papers connected with his work on the 1879 edition of Webster's Dictionary.

The papers consist of biographical information in the form of a eulogy; drafts of articles; reprints of published works; and miscellaneous files.

The collection includes programs, photographs, and stage directions related to Cupid and Psyche, a masque performed in 1916 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Yale School of the Fine Arts. The collection also includes architectural drawings by Walls for a theater at the Ethel Walker School in Simsbury, CT, and correspondence related to Walls's consultations with the Display Stage Lighting Co., Inc.

The materials consist of memorabilia, photographs, artifacts, and an engraving documenting Franklin Lindley Couch's (Yale 1917) extracurricular activities while a student at Yale. Included are materials documenting the Yale Courant staff, Beta Theta Pi fraternity, Calcium Light Night, and the Yale Field Artillery in World War I.
