Abstract Or Scope
Due to Bridgeport's status as the adopted hometown of P.T. Barnum as well as the legacy of the Barnum and Bailey Winter Quarters, the Bridgeport History Center has actively collected circus related material through the years. The material in this collection represents individual acquisitions of handbills, programs, and the like, arranged in an artificial collection.
The William Collection of Circus Photographs featured a wide array of images from mostly the 1940s to 1970s, documenting circus life. It shows not only animal and human performers, but features behind the scenes images that give a greater view into what life was like for those who traveled with the group every year.
As a major repository for P.T. Barnum related material, the Bridgeport History Center has amassed a large collection of circus material. This has included amassing circus route books, which list the performance locations and show details for each show in a given year.
The collection consists of reports by city, local, and regional planning agencies spanning approximately from 1873 to 2000. The geographic range of the reports is global, but is focused mainly on Southeastern Connecticut and New Haven, though many smaller towns and cities in Connecticut are also represented. More general reports about the New York region and other states, socioeconomic data about the United States, and scattered documentation about urban planning in other countries are also part of this collection.
The Civic Repertory Theatre Records consist of production files containing scripts, promptbooks, technical production documentation, manuscript and printed music, and photographs; financial records including auditor's financial statements, box office receipts, weekly financial statements, and ledgers; programs, issues of the Civic Repertory Theatre Bulletin/Magazine and other printed material; notebooks containing Eva Le Gallienne's translations of plays by Henrik Ibsen; and pressbooks and scrapbooks. Also found are materials documenting some of Le Gallienne's post-Civic Rep productions, including photoduplications of costume designs by Patricia Zipprodt for Le Gallienne's 1982 revival of Alice in Wonderland , as well as a small group of material relating to the Bonstelle Playhouse of Detroit, Michigan, which documents the work of actor Donald Cameron, also a member of the Civic Repertory Theatre.
Bridgeport is primarily known for its manufacturing role during World War II. This is thanks to the number of industries that mobilized during the war. The Air Raid and Civilian Defense Councils helped respond and keep the home front safe. In the Cold War, the Civilian Defense Council remained in place to help the city's residents prepare for the fallout of a nuclear attack or other invasion from the USSR.
