Collections

The Carl F. Schreiber Papers consist of material generated by Schreiber as curator of the William A. Speck Collection at the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library and as a Yale faculty member. The bulk of the papers were left in the library when Schreiber retired; some material has been brought to the library by the Yale German Department and by occupants of the Palmer Schreiber Library in Bingham Tower. Material includes personal papers, correspondence, writing and research files, and writings by others, documenting Schreiber's research and curatorial activities which largely focused on the German authors Harro Harring and Goethe.

The Carl Haldor Johnson Collection contains an album of photographs of Carl Haldor Johnson, a Georgetown resident, along with snapshots of his family and friends.

The Carlingford papers contain correspondence and diplomatic and other papers, mostly relating to Theobald Taaffe, 1st Earl of Carlingford. 24 letters signed in cipher from Charles II to Carlingford document the King's personal and political activities in the last years of his exile; other correspondence and papers concern Carlingford's diplomatic mission during the second Anglo-Dutch War, including letters by Henry Bennet, Earl of Arlington, Sir William Swan, and Sir William Temple. Other family papers include a letter concerning Carlingford's death and letters by Francis Taaffe, 3rd Earl of Carlingford, describing his military service with the Duke of Lorraine's regiment during the 1670s and 1680s.

Correspondence, reports, writings, research records and memoranda from professional organizations, all related to his work in the field of communications and the modification of beliefs and attitudes. One-quarter of the papers consists of professional correspondence (1943-1959). Principal writers are Leonard S. Cottrell, John Dollard, Irving L. Janis, Frederick Sheffield, Muzafer Sherif and Donald R. Young. Another large section is devoted to his study of the effectiveness of the War Department's training films during World War II. Also included are a series of essays written between 1939-1958, research proposals, and miscellaneous published material.

Drawings, photographs and newspaper clippings relating to the trial of Mayor T. Frank Hayes of Waterbury, Conn. together with a number of city officials for conspiracy. The Mortison cartoons appeared in the Waterbury Republican and the Waterbury American. The three scrapbooks contain reproductions of the Mortison cartoons and Pulitzer prize-winning stories from these newspapers on the two year trial together with annotations by Mortison. These have been filmed and discarded.

Collected by Carl Mautz. Photographs are chiefly studio portraits of men, women, and children, including Peter Britt, Amalia Grobb Britt, Amalia Britt, and Emil Britt. Stereographs in the collection depict outdoor spaces including Crater Lake, Mount Shasta, Rogue River; the Britt household; and Jacksonville, Oregon.

Carlos Bates (1808-1878) was an East Granby merchant, peddler, money-lender, etc. His brothers include Anson Bates (b. 1799), a lawyer and justice of the peace, and Albert Bates (b. 1804), an Ohio farmer. The collection consists of correspondence by Carlo Tommaso Maillard de Tournon, members of his staff, and associates which documents Tournon's legation to the Sino-Manchu empire (1705-1710). The collection also includes a journal kept by Giovanni Borghese, Tournon's personal physician; later letters (1711-1726) from missionaries in China; and twentieth century printed material concerning Tournon and his mission.

The archives consist of field notebooks from 1914-1957, photographs of both specimens and localities, inventories of specimens and localities, miscellaneous material gathered for notes and lectures, unpublished manuscripts, and correspondence. There are also hydrographic and topographic maps of Newfoundland, and topographic maps of Illinois, Nebraska, Oklahoma, New York, Texas, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Colorado, and Missouri.

Carl A. Pettersch was Professor of Social Science 1946-1955, Dean of Graduate Studies 1955-1973, Faculty Emeriti 1973-2003 as Professor of History. This collection comprises the papers of Dr. Pettersch while Dean of Graduate Studies.
