The collection consists of correspondence, business and financial records, artwork, and photographs relating to the early years of the British publishing company Lawrence & Wishart, its predecessor company Wishart & Company, and the founding partner Ernest Edward Wishart. Correspondence includes letters to, from, and about various authors, journalists, lawyers, and booksellers, among others. There is extensive correspondence concerning the publication of Jack Butler Yeats's book Sligo (1930), the sales of Nancy Cunard's book Negro Anthology (1934), and the libel case regarding Gerard Kersh's book Jews Without Jehovah (1934). Business and financial records include estimates from printers and binders, sales figures, royalty statements, stocktaking records, loan documents, minutes of director's meetings, and reader's reports. Also present is material documenting the company's involvement in the Publishers' Association of Great Britain and Ireland and its collaborations with the Left Book Club and Workers' Bookshop, as well as original cover artwork for Several Occasions by Mary Butts, among other books.

The Jacques Guicharnaud Papers consist of correspondence with literary and teaching colleagues, publishers, family, and friends; autograph manuscript and typescript drafts of plays, literary criticism, and other writings; a small amount of drafts and offprints of literary criticism by colleagues; syllabi, lecture notes, and administrative papers relating to teaching at Yale University and Harvard University; printed material including theater programs and clippings relating to theater in France and the United States; and a small amount of financial records, photographs of colleagues, family, and play productions, and other papers. Most materials date from Guicharnaud's career in the United States; some correspondence and writings from his studies and early career in France are also present. Research strengths include Guicharnaud's writings and teaching career, French theater, and criticism and teaching of French literature in the United States, 1950s-1990s.

Collection consists of correspondence, writings, and personal papers documenting the life and work of Jerome Mellquist. Correspondence includes letters between Mellquist and family, friends, writers, artists, musicians, and cultural critics in the United States and Europe from 1918 to 1962, with the bulk dating from the early 1930s to early 1960s. Correspondence dating from 1946 to 1948 relates chiefly to the journalist and music critic Paul Rosenfeld (1890-1946), for whom, along with Lucie Wiese, Mellquist compiled a memorial volume entitled Paul Rosenfeld: Voyager in the Arts (1948). Correspondence is chiefly in English, but letters can also be found in French, Spanish, and German. Writings include drafts of numerous short articles and essays, materials relating to published and unpublished book projects, and unsorted writings. Articles and essays relate chiefly to modern art and aesthetics. Book projects include research materials, plans, and drafts for the following: Mellquist's memorial volume to his friend Paul Rosenfeld; a book relating to French art dealer Paul Durand-Ruel; another relating to a 1962 colloquium; and one, entitled "World Art in War", on heroism in pictures. Unsorted writings and materials include short works, plays, and a novel. Personal Papers include address books, agenda books, diaries, journals, notebooks, photographs, printed ephemera, and scrapbooks.

William Richard Johnson Papers, 1836-1966

The papers detail the life and work of William Richard Johnson, most significantly documenting the years he spent in China, 1906-1942. William Richard Johnson was born in 1878 in Cornell, Illinois. He received a B.A. degree from Northwestern University in 1905 and an M.A. degree from Columbia University Teachers College in 1937. In 1906, Johnson sailed for China to serve as a missionary for the Methodist Episcopal Church. In China, he served as a pastor, educator and school administrator. He was active in famine and flood relief work, 1931-1936, and proposed a Rural Reconstruction Program adopted by the central government in 1933. Shortly after becoming the assistant director of the American Red Cross China Relief Unit, Johnson was taken prisoner by the Japanese in 1941. He was exchanged and returned to the United States in 1942. He died in Polo, Illinois on July 19, 1967.

Margaret Waring Buck was born in New York in 1905. She was an illustrator, naturalist, and physiognomist who lived much of her life in Mystic, Connecticut, up until her death in 1997. Miss Buck studied the 'science' of Face Reading with Dr. Holmes W. Merton in the 1930s in New York City. Miss Buck also illustrated many books on natural subjects, including Animals Through the Year, published in 1941, and How They Grow, published in 1972. Margaret Waring Buck died on 13 March 1997.
