This collection documents the history of The Litchfield Female Academy, Litchfield, Connecticut. Early records refer to the Academy as Miss Pierce's School, Miss Pierce's Academy, and Sarah Pierce's Academy. In the collection are institutional records; correspondence, diaries, journals, school notebooks, and albums of students; papers of Sarah Pierce and the Pierce family; and correspondence of Emily Noyes Vanderpoel regarding her research for her books "Chronicles of a Pioneer School, from 1792 to 1833" , published in 1903 and "More Chronicles of a Pioneer School" published in 1927. Included in the institutional records are works written by Sarah Pierce and her nephew, John Pierce Brace.

Nancy Tatnall Fuller Research Collection on Joseph Swift, 1858-1997

Nancy Tatnall Fuller's collection on Joseph Swift was acquired during research for her book Joseph Swift in the Wild West. Over 40 letters between Joseph Swift and family members from 1858 to 1887 describe frontier life in Montana, the gold rush, cattle herding, the Civil War, settler relations with Piegan Indians, and local news. Swift omitted mention of his friendship with the Plummers and Joseph Slade in letters home though his father commented on vigilante executions in Montana. Also included are Fuller's research notes and correspondence, typescript transcripts of Swift's letters, photocopied articles and books about vigilante activity in Bannack, obituaries for Joseph Swift and Francis M. Thompson, background material for Fuller's book and a copy of Joseph Swift in the Wild West. Addition to the collection in 2004 includes financial records, receipts, correspondence and other material related to Swift's investment and participation in various companies, including the Tally-On-Top Salesbook Company, the Geometric Drill Company, and the Uncle Sam Gold Mining Company.

The papers consist of correspondence and legal and financial records documenting James Ewing's commercial interests in southern Africa. Correspondence between James Ewing and his nephew Vincent Ewing concerns the day to day management of the ranch Vincent owned in Rhodesia. Additional correspondence, financial accounts and agreements relate to J. A. Ewing and Company's investments in cattle, lumber, insurance and other ventures, particularly in South Africa and Rhodesia. The papers reflect the effects of World War I on such commercial activity.
