Jones. Also included is a scrapbook assembled by Town's daughter, Etha Town Peters.

Colman Ltd. at Norwich; members of the Colman family of Carrow House, Norwich, contributed significantly to this collection; many letters in these albums are addressed to Jeremiah James Colman (1830-1899), who was M.P. for Norwich from 1871-1895, or to his son-in-law James Stuart, P.C., M.P (1843-1913); other contributors to the collection were the Rev. Mr. Barrett of Norwich, and Timothy Cole (1852-1931); the collection is strong in liberal politicians and nonconformist clergy, and many of the letters concern activities in which Smith was interested and which took place in and around Norwich.

    Jesuit Missionary Collection, 1671-1749

    The collection documents the history of the Jesuit missions in Mexico. Letters by the padres, the Visitador Alvaro Flores de Sierra, and military leaders discuss the Seri Indian attacks on the missions and the need for military protection. Documents addressed to Juan de Yturberoaga, Procurador of the Province of New Spain, concern the distribution of supplies to the missions and their administration. Material also describes the difficulty of transporting cattle in the region.

    2 ALS to Juan de Yturberoaga 3p., docketed 31-31.5 cm. The first letter discusses his debt to Padre Juan Baptista Haller of Tepomera [?]. He would pay him if he had the money, but the only thing he has in abundance is want. In the second letter he is grateful for pardon of the debt, but he already paid it. Complains of his poverty and of the wealth of the Tarahumara missions like that of Padre Joseph Neuman who gives nothing to the Province although he could afford to.

    2 ALS to Juan de Yturberoaga, the first accompanied by a list of supplies needed for the year 3p., addressed and docketed 31.5 cm. The list is signed by Almanza and Francisco Xavier de Mora, rector of the mission. The first letter transmits the list and specially requests an iron for baking hosts. The second letter transmits the money owed for the present year's supplies and requests that it be forwarded to Padre Marcos Antonio Kappus at Aribechi. Almanza was prevented from delivering it himself by an outbreak of smallpox.

The writings includes an autograph manuscript of "Elia to his Correspondents," and a sonnet, beginning "They talk of time, and of time's galling yoke...." Accompanying material includes a pamphlet on Lamb by Edward Moxon, no. 703 of The Mirror, and two engraved portraits of Lamb.
