Correspondence and writings by and about H. M. Tomlinson. Tomlinson's correspondents include William McFee, James T. Babb, and Eugene Saxon. There is office correspondence and memos from Harper & Brothers' office files relating to Tomlinson, and letters to James T. Babb and John Archer Gee about Tomlinson. Writings include typescript drafts, with corrections, of All Our Yesterdays, Gallion's Reach, as well as autograph manuscripts and typescripts of various essays.

The collection consists of letters to Pettigrew from a variety of correspondents, including scholars and antiquarians, members of the nobility and gentry, and professional colleagues. The letters concern scientific matters, including Egyptology and medicine, and the affairs of the various learned societies of which Pettigrew was a member, such as the British Archaeological Association, the Medical Society of London, the Royal Society, the Society of Antiquarians, and the Archaeologcal Institute of Great Britain and Ireland. A few letters concern the Duke of Sussex.

The papers primarily document the administration of the debt-burdened estate of Auchinleck after the death of Sir Alexander Boswell in 1822. They include business and legal correspondence; accounts, receipts, valuations and other estate records; the process of the settlement of Sir Alexander Boswell's heritable estate; and other financial and personal papers.
The papers also contain material pertaining to the related family of Douglas of Garallan, including land records, financial papers, and business correspondence. In addition, there are letters by Charles Douglas, a planter in Jamaica, concerning many aspects of his life and career, such as his ownership of slaves and opinions about slavery, immigrant life in Jamaica, and the impact of the Napoleonic Wars on the Caribbean. The letters of Patrick Charles Douglas Douglas Boswell describe his efforts to establish himself as a tea planter in India in the early 1880s.

Included are letters from Folsom to his second, third, and fourth wives and other family correspondence. A letter from his brother, Jeremiah, describes conditions in Lowell, Massachusetts and another from E. D. Spalding discusses a small pox epidemic. The Civil War items consist of papers relating to Folsom's service with the Minnesota infantry volunteers and a map of Fort Alexis in Mobile Bay.
