This collection comprises the papers of HIV/AIDS activist and writer, Stephen Gendin. The materials document both Gendin's activism as well as his personal and family life, and include correspondence; photographs; writings; address and appointment books; student papers; notes; audio and video recordings; and electronic files. Many of the organizations with which Gendin was affiliated are represented in the collection, including the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP); the AIDS Prevention Action League (APAL); Community Prescription Service (CPS); POZ Magazine; and Sex Panic!.

The Papers are focused principally on Laderman's prolific career as a composer. Virtually all of his compositions are held in the collection, including chamber music, orchestral works, operas and musicals, oratorios and cantatas, and scores for film and television. The collection contains many sketches and drafts, which give insight into Laderman's compositional process. The collection also contains a significant number of reel-to-reel recordings of Laderman's works.

They include the surviving Dial office files, with correspondence by Alyse Gregory, Marianne Moore, Gilbert Seldes, Kenneth Burke, and J. Sibley Watson; manuscripts, typescripts and corrected galleys of submissions to the magazine by authors including Ezra Pound, T. S. Eliot, D. H. Lawrence, George Santayana, William Butler Yeats, and Glenway Wescott; and advertising material. Thayer's own papers include his extensive correspondence with these literary figures and others, including E. E. Cummings, Sigmund Freud, Thomas Mann, and Cuthbert Wright; drafts of poetry and essays; financial papers; and documentation of his art collection.

Of special interest are a series of twenty-eight notebooks (1915-1951) containing "original ideas on things in general." Also included are papers and theses by his students (1921-1940). Among the personal papers are two diaries (1902 and 1929, respectively) and a day-by-day record of his daughter's first two years, 1916-1917.
