Correspondence, field reports, memoranda, and government documents chiefly relating to Bateman's service on various government commissions, among them the Metals and Minerals Division of the Foreign Economic Administration (1942-1946), the U.S. Missions to Mexico (1942), the President's Materials Policy Commission (1951-1953). The few items from his teaching career at Yale include gradebooks for the years 1907-1955 and reports on the Sheffield Scientific School.

Arthur T. Vanderbilt Political Professional and Judicial Papers 1902-1957

Arthur T. Vanderbilt was born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1888. He was educated at Newark Public High School and graduated from Wesleyan University in 1910. While at Wesleyan he was a student leader and a member Delta Kappa Epsilon. He then attended Columbia Law School, earning an LL.B. in 1913. Vanderbilt practiced law privately from 1913 to 1947, largely representing fire insurance companies, corporations, and banks. During this period, Vanderbilt also taught law at New York University as full-time faculty, later becoming Dean of the Law School from 1943 to 1948. He also served on the Wesleyan University Board of Trustees from 1934 to 1957, and acted as President of the Board from 1946 to 1947. A leader throughout his life, he also served with the American Bar Association, and was preeminent in the movement to reform the administration of justice and chaired an advisory committee to create a uniform code of military justice. Vanderbilt became a New Jersey Circuit Court judge in November 1947, and was confirmed as Chief Justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court in December 1947. He served in this capacity until his death in 1957.

The papers document the life and work of Ved Mehta and include writings, correspondence, family archival material, personal papers, academic records, financial records, research and subject files, printed material, photographs, and electronic files. Writings includes drafts of (and for some, extensive research files for) all of Mehta's major works from 1957 to 2004. Drafts of writings and Mehta's outgoing correspondence are typewritten. Subject files and correspondence relate not only to Mehta's life and work, but also to his family, to acquaintances such as Ethel Clyde, and to organizations such as the Arkansas School for the Blind, Pomona College, and Oxford University.

The records consist of correspondence, subject files, financial records, committee files, minutes, reports, and related materials documenting the activities of the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies (called the School of Forestry prior to 1972). Topics include governance, curriculum, budgets and fund-raising, buildings and properties, camps and experiment stations, research programs, students, personnel, alumni relations, and relations with governmental and forestry organizations. The records include central files of the school and those maintained by the following deans: Henry S. Graves (1900-1911 and 1922-1939), James W. Toumey (1911-1922), Samuel J. Record (1939-1945), George A. Garratt (1946-1965), Francois Mergen (1965-1974), Charles W. H. Foster (1976-1980), John C. Gordon (1983-1992), Jared L. Cohen (1992-1997), and Gus Speth (1997 -).

A collection of approximately 400 manuscript items, including letters; letterbooks; copies of statutes, pleadings, opinions and precedents; King's Bench reports; abridgments and commonplace books of cases; and other papers, documenting the development and practice of English law and the evolution of the English legal system from the thirteenth into the twentieth century. Included are an early copy of Henry de Bracton's De legibus Anglie; a fourteenth-century pocket compilation of "Statuta vetera" that opens with a copy of the Magna Carta; case reports from the sixteenth through the nineteenth centuries; letters, opinions and notes by a range of English legal figures, including William Blackstone, Edward Coke, Edward Law, Lord Thurlow, and Francis Wedderburn; and guides to court proceedings and practice from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
