The papers consist of letters, newspaper clippings, printed material, and photographs, originally mounted in three volumes, which document the personal and professional life of A. C. Gilbert. Volume one documents Gilbert's athletic career, both in Oregon and then at Yale, and his interest in magic arts. Volume two relates to Gilbert's career as a manufacturer, producing magic toys, Erector sets, model trains, and other toys. The last volume concerns the A. C. Gilbert Company, Yale athletics, and hunting expeditions. An addition to the collection includes personal correspondence.

Correspondence, field reports, memoranda, and government documents chiefly relating to Bateman's service on various government commissions, among them the Metals and Minerals Division of the Foreign Economic Administration (1942-1946), the U.S. Missions to Mexico (1942), the President's Materials Policy Commission (1951-1953). The few items from his teaching career at Yale include gradebooks for the years 1907-1955 and reports on the Sheffield Scientific School.

Correspondence, sermons, writings, photographs, printed material and miscellanea detailing the professional career and personal life of Sidney Lovett, a clergyman and chaplain at Yale University. Lovett's activities as a minister in Boston (1919-1932), chaplain at Yale (1932-1958), member of many university organizations and committees, including the Yale Faculty Committee for Receiving Oxford and Cambridge Children and Yale-in-China, pastor of the Church of Christ in Yale, master of Pierson College, community worker in New Haven, Connecticut and professor of biblical literature, are documented in the papers. General correspondence files contain letters to and from Lovett, and include exchanges with numerous religious figures in academic positions, Yale University officials and employees, and Yale students and alumni. Correspondence and other materials relating to the Yale Faculty Committee for Receiving Oxford and Cambridge Children detail the efforts of that body to transport British children to the United States during World War II. Yale-in-China files detail Lovett's role as executive vice-president of that body. Sermons include printed and manuscript versions of many of Lovett's religious addresses, from 1914-1977, and writings include various other addresses, essays, funeral services and speeches.

Included are sermons and writings of Leonard Bacon; papers and journals of Leonard Woolsey Bacon and Benjamin Wisner Bacon; correspondence and printed material pertaining to the affair of Delia Salter Bacon and Alexander MacWhorter, a licentiate; and correspondence about the scandal between Henry Ward Beecher and Theodore Tilton regarding Beecher's affair with Tilton's wife, Elizabeth Tilton. Additional papers include diaries of Leonard Bacon; notebooks, letterbooks, manuscripts, and printed matter concerning the Congregational Church in Connecticut; correspondence, manuscripts, printed matter, newspaper clippings, and photos of four generations of the Bacon Family; and correspondence of Leonard Woolsey Bacon.

The papers consist of family correspondence, autograph albums, diaries, notebooks, financial records, photographs and memorabilia, principally of Leonard Woolsey Bacon, a physician, and of his first wife, Emma Waleska Schneeloch. The largest part of the papers is made up of Bacon's prescription books (1892-1937) containing diagnosis, prescriptions, and name, age and occupation for each patient. Also in the papers are the financial records of his practice (1907-1919) which, together with the prescription books, make an important record of the practice of medicine in New Haven in that period. In the family correspondence is a long series of letters (1886-1892) from Leonard Bacon to Emma Schneeloch during their courtship. Much of the correspondence is made up of letters from various members of the Bacon family who were opposed to the marriage. Emma Schneeloch sang with her sister, Emilie, with a band that traveled to the West in 1891. A diary kept by Emilie of this trip is in the papers. Also included are student papers from Vassar (ca. 1917-1921) and other memorabilia kept by Emma Waleska Bacon Evans, daughter of Leonard and Emma Bacon.

The papers detail the personal lives and professional careers of several generations and family lines of the Baldwin family. The legal, political, and business activities of family members in Connecticut, New York, and elsewhere are documented.
