Collections

The collection consists chiefly of bound manuscript diaries and corresponding typescript transcriptions. Also included in the collection is a bound manuscript recipe book, two letters, and a theater script translated into English from French by Dunlap entitled Thirty Years or The Life of a Gamester or The Gambler's Fate.

The Continental Vocalists, led by William Dwight Franklin, was a touring Connecticut singing group popular in the mid-19th century.

The papers consist of correspondence, journals and diaries, writings, legal and financial papers, and miscellanea of the William Dwight Whitney family, including William Dwight Whitney (1827-1894), his wife Elizabeth Wooster Baldwin Whitney (1824-1912), his brother Josiah Dwight Whitney (1819-1896), and his father Josiah Dwight Whitney (1786-1869). William Dwight Whitney material includes several hundred letters with his wife, journals and diaries (1843-1893), and a small quanity of professional papers. Material of his brother Josiah includes a geological survey of the Upper Mississippi (1862), and correspondence relating to the first systematic exploration and mapping of the American West. Information relating to Benjamin Silliman and the National Academy of Sciences is also documented. His family correspondence includes several hundred letters with William Dwight Whitney and their father, Josiah.

Autograph manuscripts relating to Whitney's research and translations of the Atharvaveda, including a copy in Sanskrit, with notes about source manuscripts; a transliteration, collated with manuscripts in Berlin, Paris, Oxford, London, and Tübingen; a draft for his Index Verborum; and unidentified drafts and notes, most apparently relating to his English translation. Drafts and notes include material by Rudolf von Roth and annotations by Charles Rockwell Lanman.

Correspondence, receipts, and memorabilia connected with a trip to Manila taken by William E. Parsons with his wife, Myra, while working as consulting architect to the Philippine government. Included in the correspondence are accounts by Myra Parson of the trip across the Pacific, descriptions of life in Manila, and comments on the political situation in the Far East.

The bulk of this collection consists of letters from William Edmond to his wife while he was serving in Congress. A few letters were written to and received from his stepbrother David in Vermont.

Photographs of sites and individuals in Oklahoma Territory and Indian Territory, as well as Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and other places in the American West, circa 1893-1935, chiefly created by William E. Irwin, as well as by his brothers, John Allison Irwin and Marvin Elmore Irwin.

William E. Mead was an alumnus of Wesleyan University and served as professor at the school, in addition to teaching and administration at high schools. His wife, Kate Mead Hurd, was a physician and author. The Meads travelled extensively in Europe and other parts of the world.

The collection consists chiefly of writings, with a small amount of correspondence. Writings include drafts of works by Faulkner and writings of others. The correspondence consists of original letters between William Faulkner and the American writer Malcolm Cowley. Also included are papers concerning the Theatre Guild and Richard Meyers production of William Faulkner's play Requiem for a Nun.
