The collection, a part of the William A. Speck Collection of Goetheana, consists of correspondence, documents, playscripts, and other writings by or relating to Goethe and his work. The major strength of the manuscript collection is its documentation of Goethe's literary reception in England and America in the nineteenth century. There are 25 letters and manuscripts in Goethe's hand, and several Faust-related items. Authors represented prominently besides Goethe include Thomas Carlyle, Frank Claudy, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, the Faust collector Georg Ehrhardt, Walther Wolfgang von Goethe, August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben, University of Illinois professor Julius Goebel, Anna Jameson, Johann Caspar Lavater, Friederich von Müller, Henry Crabb Robinson, Friedrich Schiller, Carl Frederick Schreiber, Horatio Robinson Storer, Bayard Taylor, Marie (Hansen) Taylor, Karl August Ludwig Philipp Varnhagen von Ense, and Albert Wünsch.

These papers document the work of Gerald H. Anderson, who was a missionary educator, college president, and Director of the Overseas Ministries Study Center from 1974 to 2000. Anderson's extensive writings, lectures, and conference activities provide a valuable overview of the ecumenical mission scene during the second half of the twentieth century. A substantial portion of the collection relates to Anderson's work as editor of the Biographical Dictionary of Christian Missions. These records include drafts and materials not included in the final publication as well as correspondence with the contributors. Other areas of research interest for Anderson included Christianity in the Philippines, Jewish-Christian relations, and the history of the International Association for Mission Studies.

Roland Herbert Bainton Papers, 1886-1988

Extensive correspondence, writings, notes, and illustrations document Bainton's roles as lecturer, researcher, artist, world traveler, friend to the oppressed, ardent pacifist, teacher, and mentor. Bainton was born in England and emigrated first to Canada in 1898 and then to the United States in 1902. He taught church history at Yale Divinity School from 1920 to 1962, serving as Titus Street Professor of Ecclesiastical History from 1936. Bainton wrote prolifically and was an authority on Luther and the Reformation, Christian attitudes toward war, Congregational history, and the history of the Yale Divinity School.
