General

The streets of Danbury were filled with celebrating people throwing confetti, honking car horns, hanging up American flags and even Christmas trees to celebrate the ending of World War II. President Harry S. Truman announced Japan’s surrender on August 14, 1945. Germany’s surrender in May of that year was somber in comparison. Many remained at work instead despite being given the day off. Danbury’s Catholic churches and St. James Episcopal Church were filled with people giving prayers. The Danbury Council of War Veterans began preparing a tribute to local men who died in the war. Wartime rationing of gas and other commodities was discontinued the following day. Therefore, Danbury’s hat factories expected a bright future ahead of them while the future was bleak for those employed by war plants in cities like Bridgeport, New Haven and Waterbury. |Identifier: ms069_devlin_1995_08_13
