General
Hearthstone Castle is located on a hill in southern Danbury once known as "Mountain End." In 1985, Devlin reports that recent tours allowed Danbury residents a glimpse inside the castle. The castle was built in 1897 and was, at the time, was built at the highest elevation of any other building in Danbury. It was owned by E. Starr Sanford who was son of Charles Sanford, Danbury Library's first librarian. Sanford occupied the home for a short period of time because of financial difficulties possibly caused by the financial panic of 1897. The property was sold to New York banker Victor Buck in 1902. Buck seemed to have left the home in a hurry, as all the furniture was still in the house when it was sold to C.D. Parks. The building endured vandalism until Parks' great-grandson, Richard Jennings, moved into the home in 1983. |Identifier: ms069_devlin_1985_05_05
