General
The book "History of Danbury, Conn., 1884-1896" is considered illogical in structure and difficult to use. Once, it was Danbury's only definitive history since its publication. Author James Montgomery Bailey died in 1894, two years before the book was published. Known as "the Danbury News Man," Bailey was acknowledged as a pioneer of journalistic humor. The Danbury Relief Society published the book to maintain Bailey's connection, but the book actually had three major authors: Susan Benedict Hill, Aaron Banks Hull (who received little acknowledgement by Bailey), and then James Bailey. Bailey's compilation of Hull's work was half-hazard and has resulted in criticism. |Identifier: ms069_devlin_1984_09_13b
