Virology Courses for Yale School of Medicine, 1969-1987

At first G. D. (Edith) Hsiung taught elective courses on medical virology to Yale graduate and medical students. Later she was one of a number of faculty to give lectures as part of the medical curriculum in courses on Infectious Diseases (Medical Virology) and Laboratory Medicine. From 1976 to 1979, she was one of the lecturers in the course on Laboratory Medicine for second year medical students. From 1980 to 1987, she gave the lead lecture in a course on Medical Virology organized by the Department of Laboratory Medicine. Folders contain correspondence, course curricula, her lectures, and laboratory exercises.

Virology Reference Laboratory, 1977-1993

The Virology Reference Laboratory (VRL) at the VA was created through the efforts of G.D. Hisung. It stemmed from Hsiung's Virology Laboratory at the VA, supported by VA funds and NIH research funds administered through the Yale School of Medicine. As advances were made in identifying viruses and offering targeted therapy for viral infections, Hsiung hoped that a central VA laboratory in West Haven could serve other VA Hospitals around the country. The VRL would identify viral isolates from specimens sent in by other VA Hospitals. In the early 1980s, a survey of VA Hospitals was undertaken to assess the need of such a service (see Box 18). Hsiung was granted a trial period for a year in 1984, and in 1985 the VRL was officially established through approval and funding by the VA. Hsiung became the first director of the VRL. The VRL did research projects in addition to handling specimens. The staff investigated combination therapies used against cytomegalorvirus and HIV. After Hsiung's retirement, Dr. Marie Landry became director.

From a folder labeled "Virology Reference Laboratory, Symposium March 15-16, 1997." It contains information on the VRL that Hsiung founded in the United States and similar laboratories she helped to found in Taiwan and elsewhere. Much of the information is in Chinese. This folder is related to the presentation in the previous folder.
