Young to Janet Buschman, 1954 June 23-1955 July 18, undated; and 8 sketchbooks containing architectural drawings of San Francisco, California, buildings; interior designs; book illustrations; ships and trains; and human figures and animals, 1974-2005, undated. Accompanied by a scrapbook kept by Buschman during her time as treasurer of the San Mateo Junior College Flying Club, 1948-1949, and 8 letters from Buschman's sister, Iris Buschman, 1953 August 27-1954 December 2.

George F. Usher papers, 1852-1877

The papers contain four letter books and other official papers sent, received, and kept by George F. Usher, Haitian consul in New York under President Fabre Nicolas Geffrard; the correspondence primarily details Usher's diplomatic and commercial work in New York City on behalf of the Republic of Haiti during the years 1859-1867, which included, in 1862, the United States's official recognition of the Haitian government. Among the recipients of Usher's letters are Demosthenes Bruno and Ernest Roumain, chargés d'affaires in Haiti, and August Elie, Hatian secretary of state, as well as B. C. Clark, Haitian consul in Boston, and James Redpath. Some of the letter books include lists of cargo ships trading between Haiti and New York. Usher's papers also include personal letters written from New York and during his retirement in Bristol, Rhode Island, as well as a bound volume of manuscript records of the Sewing School for the Children of St. Michael's Parish, Bristol, conducted by his daughters Helen Maria Usher (1834-1892) and Irene (Ida) Frances Usher (1838-1925) between 1869 and 1873.

Sir Edward Thornton correspondence with the British Foreign Office, 1868-1875

The papers are comprised of more than 2,500 original autograph manuscript letters and dispatches received by Sir Edward Thornton, and manuscript copies of Thornton's outgoing official and private correspondence and dispatches, in the period following the American Civil War. Thornton's correspondence was with several important figures in British foreign policy including foreign secretaries Edward Henry Stanley, George William Frederick Villiers, and George Leveson-Gower. Hundreds of other letters are from or to the under-secretaries of state for foreign affairs Edmund Hammond and Charles Stuart Aubrey Abbott. Topics discussed include issues such as the Alabama Claims, the boundary between the United States and Canada in the Pacific Northwest, fishing rights in Newfoundland, American efforts to secure land in Colombia for a trans-Isthmian canal, American encouragement of the independence movement in Cuba against Spain, questions over naturalization and citizenship, and raids by Irish-American Fenians against Canada. In his confidential letters to the foreign secretaries, Thornton discussed American politics and the personalities of American politicians, including presidents Andrew Johnson and Ulysses S. Grant, secretaries of state William Seward and Hamilton Fish, and the American ambassadors to Great Britain Reverdy Johnson and John Lothrop Motley.

Circa 500 manuscript and printed documents relating to military and political events in France, 1740s-1780s, and the military career of François-Gaston, duc de Lévis, including correspondence, diaries, maps, drawings, and other military and legal documents. Papers relate to Lévis's defense of Provence during the War of the Austrian Succession, 1748, and the ambassadorship of his cousin, Gaston Charles Pierre de Lévis, duc de Mirepoix, in London, 1749-1753; Lévis's participation in the French campaign in Germany during the Seven Years' War, 1762; construction of a canal between Saint-Omer and Aire, and other waterways in Artois, during Lévis's governorship of Artois, 1765-1780; and the court-martial of Jean-Joseph Carrier de Montieu and Louis de Cassier de Bellegarde for mismanagement of arms manufacture and inspection, for which Lévis served on the court, 1773.

The publicity records contain output of the public relations arm of the 1940 Golden Gate International Exposition. The records document the activities of the exposition and the promotional effort required of the exposition's public relations department. The public relations documents comprise the bulk of the records and are newspaper, magazine, and radio press releases, typescript mimeographed. The public relations documents concern the 1940 exposition, but one file of background information on the 1939 exposition is also present. The publicity materials include one folder of a series of forty-five feature stories, typescript mimeographed, by the California editor and writer Jack Cook, presenting a daily tour of the exposition's exhibits.

The George Platt Lynes diaries consist of diaries and datebooks which record his activities and thoughts, starting with a journal of Lynes' first trip to Europe in 1925 and ending with entries in a pocket datebook just weeks before his death in 1955. Though his early and later years are well documented, there are no diaries for the years 1931-1941. Accompanying the diaries are a few odd pieces of personal memorabilia, including a notebook of dinners given during the early 1940s and printed versions of writings by Glenway Wescott form the early 1920s.

The Hezekiah Howe Papers consist of fifteen bound volumes of manuscript records documenting three bookselling firms in New Haven, Connecticut, in which Howe was partner or owner: Beers & Howe, Howe & DeForest, and Hezekiah Howe & Co. The volumes include four bookshop inventories (1812, 1815, 1832, 1835) and four letter books (1811-1818 and 1833-1838), with financial records consisting of two ledgers (1829-1837), two journals (1831-1838), a day book (1832-1841), and two waste books (1832-1841).

The papers consist of material gathered by Mark Holloway in preparation for his unpublished biography of Martha Gordon Crotch. Series I holds Crotch's autograph manuscript diaries describing her daily activities between 1935 and 1956 and her relationships with friends Alexander (Sasha) Berkman, Emmy Eckstein, Emma Goldman, Frieda Lawrence, and Norman Douglas, among others. Also present is a typescript of Crotch's autobiography, some personal papers, and photographs, including a folder of material on Francis Frederick Gordon, editor of the Advocate of India. Series II holds Mark Holloway's notes and other research material, as well as autograph manuscript and typescript pages of outlines, drafts, and chapters of his projected book which had the working title "Auntie: a biographical memoir of Mrs. Gordon Crotch (1879-1967) of Vence, and of some of her friends -- Frieda Lawrence, Emma Goldman, Norman Douglas, and Robert Nichols -- during the decade 1930-1940."

The Katharine Brush papers consist chiefly of material relating to an unpublished novel by Brush entitled "Lover Come Back". The novel, started in the early 1940s, went through multiple revisions and had a working title of "Story of Sylvia". Materials relating to the work include research files, outlines and synopses, drafts, and supplementary material, such as excerpts, discards, and schedules. The papers also include research files on military topics.
