The collection contains research material and drafts for "The Selected Letters of Edward Rowland Sill," edited by Barbara D. Simison and Stanley T. Williams; Simison and Williams collaborated on publication of Sill's account of his voyage around Cape Horn from December 1861 to March 1862, published as Around the Horn (New Haven: Yale University Press, 1944). Materials include the following: correspondence between Simison, Williams, and others relating chiefly to Sill's correspondence; copies (transcriptions) of Sill's correspondence, catalog cards listing correspondence, manuscript notes, and multiple drafts. The bulk of the collection dates from the editors solicitation of information about Sill's correspondence, starting in 1942, to a 1953 draft of "The Selected Letters," though correspondence relating to the work includes a brief 1965 exchange with an academic publisher.

Granville Stuart papers, 1864-1918

The papers consist of correspondence, writings, photographs, clippings and other papers relating to Granville and James Stuart and the early history of Montana. Much of the correspondence is dated 1916-1918 and consists of incoming letters and typewritten carbon copies of outgoing letters relating to information on Montana history, and Native American vocabularies. Principal correspondents include John E. Rees, Charles Kessler, William John McConnell, and Nelson Story. There are also short essays written by Granville Stuart and others on various episodes in Montana history, cabinet card photographs, of Granville Stuart and an Indian possibly identified as "Little Claw of a Grizzly Bear," and newspaper clippings on Henry Plummer and vigilantes. Other papers include a manuscript notice written by James Stuart calling for volunteers to join him in the Yellowstone, a manuscript appointment of James Stuart as captain of the expedition signed by ten men.

Correspondence, diaries, writings, and other papers recording Susan Wilbur Jones' years in Europe, Chicago, and Cambridge, Mass. as a student, editor, author, wife, and mother. In addition to much material on Susan's family life and life as a student, the papers contain references to the Chicago literary world, in which Susan and her husband Llewellyn socialized with Harriet Monroe, Floyd Dell, John Cowper Powys, Edgar Lee Masters, Carl Sandburg, and Mark Turbyfill. The correspondence is arranged into personal correspondence, business correspondence, and personal business correspondence. Principal correspondents include Katherine Lee Bates, and cousins Edward Brigham, E. P. Warren, and Cornelia Warren. Also included is a letter from her mentally ill aunt Susan Rice, and a letter from Gyp Taylor discussing life in Paris in 1932 mentioning Gertrude Stein, Natalie Barney, William Seabrook, and Ford Madox Ford. There are also family letters from Susan's mother and father, mostly dating from 1909 when Susan spent a year in Europe; as well as correspondence to Susan and her mother from Susan's great-aunt, Susan C. Warren, and from Susan's grandmother, Sarah Ann Cook Wilbur. The diaries are dated 1912, 1914-16, 1918-1919, 1921-1924. Writings include "Saint Nicholas Eve" and an incomplete essay entitled "Floyd and Margery Dell Throw a Party!". Other Papers include Isaac Levine's printed poem "The Queen of Elfland's Daughter (A Moon Fantasy)" inscribed to Susan and Llewellyn.

Many letters concern Mayer's and Sauerländer's personal and professional relationships with Kurt and Helen Wolff. Other correspondence includes letters to Sauerländer from Jacques Schriffrin, letters and documents relating to translations of Bertolt Brecht by Ralph Manheim, and letters to Mayer from Norman Holmes Pearson and Erich and Fine Kahler, accompanied by photographs of Fine Kahler. Most correspondence to Sauerländer includes typescript carbon copies of his responses.

Research files include correspondence, notes, photocopies, and photographs of Cotton manuscripts from repositories including the Beinecke, Bodleian, British, Clark, Derby Borough, Houghton, Huntington, and New York Public Libraries, as well as dealers and scholars including Peter Croft and Alvin Dust. Research copies consist of manuscripts, including a complete copy the Derby Manuscript; photographs of manuscripts used in Parks's article on Cotton; dealer catalogs; and secondary sources.

The Robert B. Fisk Papers consist of family correspondence and business papers created and accumulated by Robert B. Fisk during the course of his career as an attorney and land developer in Potter County, South Dakota. Correspondence broadly documents nineteenth- and early twentieth-century South Dakota life, including the rapidly growing settler population, business and real estate transactions, politics and the transition to statehood, the conditions of workers and prisoners, and the effect of the Panics of 1893 and 1907 on the local population. Business records include correspondence from mortgage and wholesale companies for whom Fisk worked as a collections agent. Additionally, letters from family members document life in contemporary Kentucky.
