The Nichols Family Correspondence consists almost entirely of letters addressed to the three generations of the Nichols family who owned the printing firm Nichols & Co. and edited and published the Gentleman's Magazine from 1778 to 1856. The letters document a portion of the publication history of the magazine, particularly the professional and personal relationships between the Nicholses and their contributors. The collection also documents other publication projects of Nichols & Co., as well as the Nichols's antiquarian and literary interests.

Maria Edgeworth collection, 1791-1940

Collection includes Bertha Coolidge Slade's collection of Edgeworth materials, including correspondence between Edgeworth and Richard Bentley and others; copies of letters by Edgeworth, including correspondence with Rachel Mordacai Lazarus and John Murray; letters by Richard Lovell Edgeworth; holograph poem entitled "Enigma"; drawing of Edgeworth's Library by F. W. Fairholt; and Slade's research files, gathered during research for her book, "Maria Edgeworth, 1767-1849, a Bibliographical Tribute," which consist of correspondence with rare book and manuscript dealers including Michael Sadleir, and notes about various editions of Edgeworth's writings.
Also included is original Edgeworth material from other sources, including correspondence with Anna Letitia Barbauld and others; letters by Richard Lovell Edgeworth; several engravings of Edgeworth; and an undated corrected typescript by E. G. Ewens entitled "Maria Edgeworth: A Study."

The collection contains letters and writings by or about Caroline Sheridan Norton. The letters are to recipients such as Robert Browning, Henry Cholmondeley-Pennell, Mrs. Catherine Gore, Nathaniel Ogle, Lady Anna Stirling Maxwell, and Frances Trollope, as well as a letter to William Francis Cowper-Temple concerning the death of his uncle, Lord Melbourne. Writings include several autograph poems, and the autograph manuscript of "Love in the World," a novel written when Norton was a young girl.

Collection of letters assembled by Lady Smith from her correspondence and that of her husband, Sir James Edward Smith (1759-1828); before each section of letters, she provides a brief biographical sketch of the authors represented in those letters; the third volume contains mainly letters reacting to her husband's death and to her Memoir and Correspondence of the Late Sir J.E. Smith; collection touches on many aspects of the Smiths' interests, personal and public, scientific and literary; it illustrates their many friendships, especially with the family of William Roscoe (1753-1831) and the Holkham literary circle; especially interesting are the discussions of gardening and concerning the Linnean Society of England; on the whole it provides a well-rounded picture of Norfolk society and literature from the late 18th century to the mid 19th century; the collection includes several MS and printed poems.

Includes letters between Rebekah Clegg Bateman and her husband, Thomas Bateman, her son, William Bateman, her father, Arthur Clegg, and her sister, Elizabeth Clegg Wilson; letters between Rebekah Bateman and her brothers, William and Thomas Bateman; one letter from Thomas Bateman to his son, Thomas; and letters between William Bateman and his brother, Thomas, and his father, Thomas. Many of the letters are written by and to children at school. Also included are hymns, poetry, prayers, and excerpts from sermons written down by Rebekah Clegg Bateman; and a travel diary written by her son, Thomas, about a visit to the Lake Country.

The papers consist of correspondence, mainly between members of the Leadbeater family, including Mary Leadbeater and her husband William, and the Shackleton family, including Mary Leadbeater's parents, Elizabeth and Richard Shackleton, her sister, Sarah, and her grandfather, Abraham Shackleton. There is also correspondence with many other relatives, including Mary's cousin, Margaret Pike. Many letters were written by children. There is extensive correspondence between Mary and the poet Melesina Trench. The papers also include poetry by Mary (including a poem written about Edmund Burke); narrative diaries kept by her mother, Elizabeth; manuscript magazines written by children; and a family tree.
