Miscellaneous papers by and about Bushnell. Only two items are in his hand: a letter (1787) claiming land due him as a result of his service in the American Revolution, and a description of a model for a sailing torpedo [1824?]. Papers on his inventions include a letter by Ezra Lee (1815) with an account of Bushnell's submarine and Lee's operation of it in August 1787 in New York harbor. Also three letters by Joel Abbot (1825) to Bushnell (then known as David Bush) on his attempts to promote Bushnell's naval warning device. Correspondence (1826-1827) between his executor and his heirs, Ezra and Nehemiah Bushnell of Saybrook, Connecticut, includes a final accounting of Bushnell's estate. In the later papers (1881-1956) are four letters to Anson Phelps Stokes with biographical information on Bushnell and publications on his submarine.

Chiefly letters by Roger Griswold, of which three-fourths were written to his wife, Fanny Rogers Griswold, while he served in Congress, in Philadelphia and Washington, 1794-1805. While the letters to his wife are largely on family and practical matters relating to the family farm in Lyme, Connecticut, his letters to his father, Matthew Griswold, and to his brother, also Matthew, discuss politics briefly. A letter to Secretary of War, William Eustis, discusses the issue of placing the Connecticut militia under federal control. Also in the papers is a printed copy (1799) of the Constitution of the United States with marginalia in Griswold's hand.

Mailliard Family papers, 1785-1896

The major part of these papers consist of correspondence, business papers and memorabilia relating to Joseph Bonaparte, ex-king of Naples and Spain. These were accumulated by Louis Hypolite Mailliard who acted as secretary to Bonaparte and was later executor of his estate. Most of these papers related to the affairs of the estate, including property in Bordentown, New Jersey, where Napoleon lived in exile from 1816 to 1839. A small amount of the correspondence as well as journals kept by Louis Mailliard from 1835-1844 concern Napoleon's personal affairs. Other members of the Bonaparte family figure in the correspondence as well since the Mailliard family acted as executor for them also. Included in the papers is a small amount of miscellaneous correspondence (1839-1857) of George Sumner including letters from Washington Irving, Alexis de Tocqueville, Henry W. Longfellow, William H. Prescott and William E. Gladstone.

Chiefly correspondence and diaries of James Wesley Cooper documenting his career as a Congregational minister, and his service as a Fellow of Yale University (1886-1916). The only personal correspondence are forty-four letters from Cooper to his fiancée in 1865 and fourteen additional letters (1877-1905). The diaries (1869-1914) provide a daily record of his work as a minister and of his visits to churches and schools in the South supported by the American Missionary Association. He was an officer of the Association between 1903 and 1914. Also in the papers are a letter from Richard Ely to Elizur May, 1787 Jun 3, a resolution of the Hartford South Association, 1819 Jun 1 and minutes taken by Noah Porter of an ecclesiastical council meeting, 1837 Nov 13.

The papers consist chiefly of the letters of Jonathan Grout and of his son-in-law, Hutchins Hapgood, to their respective sons. The letters of Jonathan Grout are mainly about the family business which his son was managing while Jonathan Grout, Sr., was in Congress (1789-1792). Only a few letters allude to politics, one on the building of the Capitol in Washington and another on the national debt. The letters of Hutchins Hapgood are also concentrated on finances and business activities, but include passages of advice to his sons about their education and health. Two letters from Hutchins Hapgood, Jr., discuss New York City and a yellow fever epidemic in the city. Also in the papers are letters by various other family members.

The papers consist of correspondence, architectural drawings, sketches, diaries, photographs, lecture materials, writings, and other documents pertaining to the life of Shepherd Stevens (1880-1962), an American architect and professor of architecture at Cornell (1915-1920) and Yale (1920-1947) universities who was educated at Columbia University (1899-1903) and trained in the Beaux-Arts tradition at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris, France, where he received his diplôme in 1908. The papers also include correspondence, photographs, writings, and other records pertaining to the lives of several of Stevens's family members, including Charlotte Cordelia (Shepherd) Davenport (aunt) and William Bates Davenport (uncle). The collection is a particularly rich and valuable resource for studying architectural education and pedagogy in the early decades of the twentieth century.

The papers relate principally to Eben Jenks Loomis, astronomer, poet, and nature writer, and to his immediate family, and to his wife, Mary Alden Wilder Loomis and her immediate family, including papers of John Augustus Wilder, Civil War officer and lawyer for the U.S. Army. The Eben Janks Loomis papers contain much of interest relating to scientific topics current in the latter half of the ninteenth century as well as material relating to members of his family and their activities and interests. Of interest in the John Augustus Wilder papers is the material relating to the use of Negro troops in the Civil War and to his legal activities at the end of the war.

The principal figure in these papers is Sarah Madeleine Vinton Dahlgren, whose daughter, Ulrica Dahlgren married Josiah Pierce (1861-1902). More than half the papers consists of family correspondence chiefly for the years 1824-1873. Also in included are sketchbooks, memoirs, genealogical materials, account books, legal records and autographs of Civil War generals and admirals. The correspondence of Josiah Pierce (1827-1913) who was secretary of the U.S. legation in St. Petersburg includes material documenting his service in Russia. Also in the papers is the diary (in Russian) of Ivan Timofieff for the year 1858, with an English translation. The papers of Samuel Finley Vinton, who was congressman from Ohio (1823-1837; 1843-1851) include courtship letters to his fiancée.

Papers of ten members of the Tracy family, originating in Litchfield, Connecticut. The most prominent figures are Uriah Tracy, Roger Sherman Tracy, Howard Crosby Tracy, and Evarts Tracy. The papers of Uriah Tracy include letters to his children written while he was in Congress (1794-1806), letters to others on Congressional business, and his journal of a trip to the West in 1800. The papers of Roger Sherman Tracy consist chiefly of letters written to his family from Yale College in 1859 and from Berlin where he had gone to study in 1869. Included also are two letters from Jacob Riis. The correspondence of Howard Crosby Tracy contains twelve of his letters to his parents from Yale College and elsewhere and sixty-four letters to him from members of the Class of 1887. The largest part of his correspondence reflects his activities as a Republican on both the local and national level. Evarts Tracy's papers deal largely with World War I, and consist of letters written to Tracy as well as notebooks kept by Tracy during the war, a sketchbook, poems and other memorabilia. The women in the family are represented by only a scattering of letters. There are also miscellaneous financial papers and materials on Tracy genealogy.

The major figure in these papers is Joseph Monfort Street, who was an Indian agent in Iowa in the 1820s and 1830s. Half of the collection is made up of family correspondence (1805-1931). Included is the correspondence of Joseph M. Street with his wife, Eliza Maria Posey Thornton, and his sons, and members of the Street and Posey families.Topics discussed in the letters include religion, health, national politics and slavery, particularly in reference to slaves owned by the Street family. Joseph M. Street's experiences on the frontier are documented in letters and financial records. Also in the papers are writings by Ida M. Street, William B. Street, and others on Indian affairs in the Iowa territory (1899-1901) and a day book (1795-1802) belonging to George Cheney.

The most prominent figure is Alfred Howe Terry, a Civil War general in the Union army, whose correspondence and military papers relate to the Fitz-John Porter case, the Indian campaigns (1870s) and reminiscences of military service and the Civil War. Included are orders for the court martial of General Custer and drawings supposedly given to Terry by Sitting Bull. Other family members include his brother, Adrian, who also served in the Civil War, and Adrian's wife, Isadore Wright Terry, whose correspondence includes letters from her husband during the war describing his experiences.

The papers contain correspondence, unpublished writings, and research material relating to Hubert Vickery's work as a biochemist at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station. Because reprints and drafts of publications have not been retained, there is little documentation of his experimental results in the papers. There are, however, details of his major contributions to establish a system of notation for amino acids and also to record the histories of their discovery. The papers also contain genealogical materials, including legal and financial papers of the Bradford family of London and the Starr family of Nova Scotia, and memorabilia from the atomic tests on Bikini Island.

Correspondence, memoranda, notes, and drawings record Herrick's work in astonomy and entomology, particularly his observations on the Aurora Borealis and the Hessian fly. Prominent scientists among his correspondents include Louis Agassiz, James D. Dana, Thaddeus William Harris, Elias Loomis, Lambert Adolphe Jacques Quetelet, William C. Redfield, Samuel H. Scudder, Benjamin Silliman, Benjamin Silliman Jr., and William Tully. His career as librarian of Yale College (1843-1858) is reflected in catalogues, invoices, and memoranda relating to book purchases for the library. Between 1847 and 1862 he also supervised the publication of the triennial catalogues for Yale College and memoranda concerning these are also in the papers. His financial and legal files contain both personal records and account books (1835-1844) for the booksellers' firm of Herrick and Noyes, of which he was a partner. Also included are papers relating to New Haven including minutes of committee meetings, reports and correspondence on the Bicentennial (1838).

The papers consist of correspondence, writings, speeches, diaries, clippings, printed matter, and other papers related to descendants of Samuel Scoville, Sr. (1835-1902) and his wife Harriet Eliza Beecher (1838-1911). Materials document the activities of members of the Beecher, Gallaudet, Scoville, Trumbull, and Barry families. The bulk of the material relates to Alice Scoville Barry's research on Henry Ward Beecher, particularly on the 1875 adultery trial against Theodore Tilton and his wife Elizabeth Tilton. Her research notes include her opinions, book drafts, and correspondence with family members and close friends, including her brother Reverend Gurdon Trumbull Scoville (1904-1993). Additionally, the papers include materials relating to deaf education from Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet, Gallaudet genealogical information, writings, and family photographs. Also included are letters between Trumbull family members, biographical articles and obituaries of the Trumbull family, society applications with genealogical information, photographs, and newspaper clippings. Most of the Trumbull family correspondence is among Henry Clay Trumbull, Sally Ann Swan, James Hammond, Gurdon Trumbull, Sr., Gurdon Trumbull, Jr. and other family members. Professional papers of Dan Beach Bradley and his son, Cornelius Beach Bradley, both missionaries to Thailand (then Siam) in the nineteenth century. The papers of Dan Beach Bradley consist of four manuscript volumes of a Siamo-English dictionary, articles and notes on the history and culture of Siam, including a list (copy) by the king of Siam of his 61 children in 1852, as well as copies of essays on the Siamese language in both English and Siamese by the king. A number of unidentified papers in Siamese, collected by Dan B. Bradley, are also included. His personal papers which contain 28 volumes of his journals (ca. 1835-1873), are in the library of Oberlin College. The journals have been filmed. Several maps of Thailand and China (1867-1870) have been sent to the Map Department of the Yale University Library. The Cornelius Beach Bradley papers consist chiefly of manuscripts on the Siamese language and rubbings of inscriptions on stone tablets accompanied by correspondence and notes on their translation. Other reprints relate to the origin of Siamese alphabetic writing and an analysis of the language. There is a small amount of correspondence for both Dan Beach and Cornelius Beach Bradley and one letter from Dan Beach Bradley (1767-1838) to his sister, Mehetabel, dated August 23, 1801.

This latter volume (1803-1821) records the commodities shipped from Danbury by the firm to its Charleston, South Carolina store. Included also is a single family letter (1847) from Lucy S. The principal figure in these papers is Joseph Bardwell Lyman, a lawyer and journalist. The papers include his correspondence, diaries, business papers, account books, court books, and articles written between 1858-1865. His student career is documented with papers written while at Yale College (1845-1850) and at the University of Louisiana Law School. As a distant relative of the Dickinson family of Amherst, Massachusetts, he corresponded with Emily Dickinson, her brother, Austin, and her sister, Lavinia. One letter from Austin Dickinson is in the papers. Emily Dickinson and Lavinia are represented by "snatches" from their letters copied out by Lyman. Also in the papers is a two-year series of engagement letters written to Laura E. Baker between 1856 and 1858 when they were married. Other letters describe army life during the Civil War, the Battle of Shiloh, 1862, and Lyman's interest in journalism and agriculture. Laura Baker Lyman is represented in the papers by a journal and miscellaneous papers.

The major figures in these papers are Alfred and Annie O. Tiffany Mitchell, whose correspondence, diaries, writings, financial accounts, photographs and other memorabilia make up the major part of the papers. Of particular interest is a long series of letters from their daughter, Charly Tiffany Mitchell Jeans. During her years at Bryn Mawr College, 1894-1898, her letters describe her education and life there. After her marriage in 1907 to the English philosopher, James Jeans, she wrote of her life in England with particularly graphic letters during the first World War. Nine branches of the family are represented in the remaining papers by scattered items of correspondence, clippings, household accounts, financial papers and assorted memorabilia. The sermons of Alfred Mitchell (1790-1831) make up the largest single portion of this section; the papers of the most prominent family member, Louis Comfort Tiffany, include only a small amount of correspondence, clippings and a drawing. His letters to his sister, Annie O. Mitchell, are in the Mitchell correspondence. The papers also include extensive genealogies, family histories and photographs of the United States and places abroad visited by Alfred Mitchell.

Correspondence and scrapbooks of the fourth and fifth generations of the family of Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758) chiefly relating to their health and welfare. Includes the correspondence of Jonathan Edwards (1789-1875), a politician from upper New York State; his brother-in-law, George Champion, a missionary to the Zulus in 1838; and his son, Jonathan Edwards, Jr. (1841-1886), who studied medicine but did not practice and who edited Yale's catalogue of Greek and Roman coins. Subjects covered in the letters include the Know Nothing movement, business risks in New York in the 1840's, religious conversions, the Civil War, temperance, and descriptions (1861-1862) of Albert Hamilton Emery's inventions for the cannon. Includes a letter from Jeremiah Clemens, Senator from Alabama, relating to Aaron Burr.

The papers highlight Darling's role as head of the Division of Medicine at Yale University, 1946-1953, and as director of the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission, 1957-1972. The papers also include files from Darling's participation in Operation Crossroads as a civilian observer of the atomic testing at Bikini Atoll. There are also photographs from personal travel around the world and papers of various members of the Darling, Smith, and Shaw families. These papers form part of the Contemporary Medical Care and Health Policy Collection.

Most significant in the papers is a series of eight letters written in 1832 by Oastler to Thomas Daniels, the secretary of the Manchester Short-Time Committee, a letter from Oastler's wife, Mary, and another from Michael Thomas Sadler, the author of the Ten-Hour Bill, to Oastler. Driver's correspondents include Roland H. Bainton, Lewis P. Curtis, Edgar Johnson, Broadus Mitchell, Clinton L. Rossiter, and Hume Wrong.
