The principal figure is Daniel Pierpont, business man and town clerk of North Haven whose papers include an account book kept while building a house (1846), fourteen deeds for land in North Haven and a description of a churn invented by him. His diary (1824) contains an account of a murder trial in New Haven interrupted by the arrival of General Lafayette, and a description of a journey through southern New York state where he observed preparations for the reception of LaFayette. There is also an estate inventory for Hezekiah Pierpont (1792), financial papers of Rufus Pierpont and a resolution (Aug 1, 1855) of St. John's Church on his death.

Of special interest among the Connecticut papers is an order from Governor Gurdon Saltonstall to Major John Clark (1718) to suppress the disturbances at Saybrook protesting the removal of Yale College to New Haven.

The European travel diaries for Nathaniel Chauncey (1824-1826) and Durham, Connecticut town records relating to Worthington Gallup Chauncey's municipal duties are also included in the papers.

Correspondence, diaries, legal and financial records and memorabilia by and about the descendants of Lieutenant Thomas Leffingwell, one of the founders of Norwich, Connecticut. The major groups of papers are those of Christopher Leffingwell (1734-1810), a merchant in Norwich and William Leffingwell (1765-1834), a stockbroker in New York and later a resident of New Haven. These groups contain papers on legal, financial and business transactions. Family correspondence during the Revolutionary War describes civilian life and medical treatment of the period. National politics are discussed all through the nineteenth century. Also of interest are travel diaries kept by Caroline Augusta Foote in Savannah in 1834 and by Frederica Russell Street during a grand tour of Europe, 1843-1847.

Papers of several branches of the Peck family in Connecticut. Half of the collection is made up of the papers of the Ambrose Peck family (1691-1911) including correspondence, diaries, account books, legal papers, photographs, and memorabilia. Noteworthy are letters on the Battle of Bunker Hill and the War of 1812, as well as diaries by Abby Ann Hyde Peck from her school days, 1824-1832, and her old age, 1874-1883. Another member of the family represented is Tracy Peck (1785-1862) an important public figure in Bristol, Connecticut, and active in the Congregational Church. The papers of Epaphroditus Peck contain lecture notes taken while he was attending Yale Law School (1903-1908) and family correspondence. Miscellaneous papers (1812-1907) of other members of the family make up the remainder of the collection.

Correspondence, deeds, account books, diaries and miscellaneous papers of the Curtis family of Connecticut and allied families Adams, Hallam, Poole and Pygan. In the correspondence is a Benedict Arnold letter (1768), drafts of letters by Jonathan Trumbull (1774), and a number of letters relating to military activities during the American Revolution. The papers of Benjamin Trumbull included here contain letters from Samuel A. Peters and William Winthrop, as well as notes probably collected for his history of Connecticut. Also an account by Elizabeth Adams Poole of her visit in 1782 to her husband in New York who was being held prisoner by the British. The deeds (1743-1837) chiefly record land transfers in New Haven County, Connecticut. Included also is the will of Alexander Pygan (1700), the inventory of the estate of Benjamin Curtis, and autographs collected by George M. Curtis.

Two volumes of genealogical and related materials of the Marble-Richardson family from the Hingham area of Massachusetts. The work was compiled by Arthur Demerick Marble of Lawrence, Massachusetts. Included are family charts, pictures, drawings, clippings, biographical sketches, letters, copies of diaries and legal documents. Prominent figures are Gershom and Demerick Marble, Thomas Burr, represented by diaries from the French and Indian and Revolutionary Wars, Abijah Richardson, Jr. who travelled to California in 1851, and John Lewis writing from Maine in 1746-1747.

The collection is composed of family correspondence, diaries, and legal, financial, and professional papers which document the lives of several members of the Kingsley family or of the related Coit, Gilman, Upham, and Farnam families. One third of the collection concerns James Luce Kingsley, his tenure on the Yale faculty, and his classical and historical scholarship. Another third of the collection relates to the life and work of William Lathrop Kingsley, especially his editorship of the New Englander and his service to Yale College and the Class of 1843. Family interests in shipbuilding, ship repair, mercantile holdings, distillery operations, and politics are detailed, with extensive records for the New York Screw Dock Company and for many of the ships built, owned, and operated by the Hurd family.

The principal figure is David Waterbury (1722-1801), who served as a colonel in the French and Indian War and again in the American Revolution. Included in the papers are military records relating to these events and a letter to him from Roger Sherman (1776 Apr 30) about a Continental Commission. Also two travel journals kept by his son, William Waterbury IV, one for a trip throught New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Kentucky, Maryland and Delaware in 1799-1800 and another for a trip through New York State in 1812-1813.

The papers also include numerous documents of John Hoff Duke of Charleston, South Carolina, as well as estate papers of Augustine Prevost and documents relating to the early history of Wrentham, Massachusetts. Papers of Park family members include intra-family correspondence and items of related Burr, Edwards, and Reeve family members. Marion Edwards Park's correspondence documents her college years at Bryn Mawr. Correspondence with M. Carey Thomas in the 1920s details the transition of leadership at the college.

The papers relate principally to Henry Ward Beecher (1813-1887), popular 19th century clergyman and orator, and members of his family. Among those represented are his father, the Reverend Lyman Beecher (1775-1863), clergyman; his brothers, Edward Beecher (1803-1895), educator and antislavery leader, and Thomas Kinnicut Beecher (1824-1900) and Charles Beecher (1815-1900), both clergyman and antislavery activist; and his sisters, Harriett Elizabeth (Beecher) Stowe (1811-1896), author, Catherine Esther Beecher (1800-1878), pioneer educator and writer on 'domestic economy,' and Isabella Homes (Beecher) Hooker (1822-1907), well-known suffragist. Also included are papers relating to the Scoville family (mainly Annie Beecher Scoville, 1866-1953, teacher and lecturer), as well as other related families. The papers cover an extremely wide range of cultural, political, social, and religious issues and topics of 19th and early 20th century America and include correspondence from a large number of well-known men and women. The papers were previously known as the Beecher-Scoville Family Papers.

Among the papers are the personal correspondence of Richard West (1716-1742), poet; of his sister, Mary West Williams (1715-1800); of her son, the Rev. John Henry Williams (b. 1747); and of her father, Richard West, Sr. (d. 1726), lawyer, playwright and statesman; family genealogies; legal papers; and other material. Included are two letters from doctors discussing various physical ailments in the light of medical knowledge of the time; letters (1724-1726) to Richard West, Sr. (when he was Chancellor of Ireland) from several Government officials, including Granville, Newcastle, and Walpole discussing various affairs of state; a collection of poetry written by Richard West, Jr., and Daniel Gaches; and information on the Dutch estate of Bishop Gilbert Burnet (1643-1715), and especially on the claims of the Rev. John Henry Burnet to the inheritance of that estate.

The largest group of papers concerns Joseph Alling and the estate of his father Chauncey Alling. Other items are a report of Thaddeus Alling's estate (1832), an application for oyster grounds in New Haven by Chauncey Alling, and a book of poetry by Anna L. Johnson.

Three branches of the Trowbridge family of New Haven, Connecticut are represented in these papers: the Stephen Trowbridge family, Francis Trowbridge, and Thomas Rutherford Trowbridge. Included are deeds and financial papers of the Stephen Trowbridge family, a notebook of medicinal and household prescriptions kept by Francis Trowbridge, and a scrapbook of Thomas Rutherford Trowbridge.

Correspondence concerning Elias Loomis' father, sisters, and brothers, who were pioneer settlers of Alton, Illinois, details the family's interest in developments in American politics, education, travel, and social conditions from the 1830s through the 1870s.

Papers of Samuel Backus's grandson James, his partner Rufus Backus, and James's brother-in-law Dudley Woodbridge concern mercantile establishments, commerce, and shipping in Norwich following the Revolutionary War. There is also correspondence between several family members of this generation, as well as a diary of James's brother Elijah, which he kept while studying in New Haven (1778). Papers of James's son William Woodbridge Backus document his investments and financial dealings, genealogical interests, and philanthropic endeavors for the last fifteen years of his life.

A Brooklyn, New York family descended from Evert Duyckinck of the Netherlands. The principal figure is Whitehead C. Duyckinck of the Yale University Class of 1865. Most of his papers consist of correspondence with former classmates on class matters. Also in the papers are legal and financial papers of the Duyckinck family (1736-1912), specifications for a house to be built on Clark Street in New York, a photograph of Evert A. Duyckinck, and assorted memorabilia.

The papers consist of four series of professional and family material. Series I (1912-1976) contains professional correspondence and research materials of Lewis Perry Curtis. Series II contains Curtis family correspondence (1912-1976). Series III holds the correspondence of the Sullivan family (1916-1980). Material in Series IV consists of correspondence (1797-1914) and personal papers of several generations of family members, and business papers (1793-1914). The addition, Accession 1997-M-063, consists of photostatic copies of autograph letters and miscellaneous family letters (ca. 1739-1765) of Laurence Sterne and the "Continuation of the Bramine's Journal."

The principal elements are three sets of correspondence: the letters between the Reverend James Cogswell and his son, James, which deal with the son's experiences as a surgeon during the American Revolution; the correspondence of Harriet Broome Cogswell Mott and her husband, Robert Willis Mott, largely made up of courtship letters, 1817-1819, but also including a detailed letter on preparations for the winter of 1823; and the correspondence between Stella Mott Onderdonk and her husband, William Handy Onderdonk, also largely courtship letters, 1839-1843. Their correspondence of later years includes a description by William Onderdonk of a trip to Cuba in 1865. Miscellaneous family items are comprised of a will, school certificates, diaries, clippings, and other memorabilia.

Extensive files of correspondence and papers for family members from the 1850s through the 1980s detail the lives and activities of such family members as William Collins Beer, a lobbyist for J.P. Morgan and Company, International Harvester Company, and the government of Italy, and a close friend of Mark Hanna; Thomas Beer, a prominent American author of novels, short stories, and articles; and Richard C. Beer, a foreign service employee stationed in Hungary during the 1920s.

The papers consist of a diary kept by Stephen Williams, 1742-1747, of daily life and religious reflection; diaries of his son Andrew Williams, 1783-1785, while teaching school in Cambridge, Massachusetts; and diaries and notes of another son Timothy Williams, 1783 and 1788-1790, which document his education at Yale College and his life in Woodstock and Norwich, Connecticut.

The principal figure is his great-grandson, George Edward Day,clergyman and professor at the Yale Divinity School, 1863-1895. Included in the papers are his correspondence, a diary (1832-1837), genealogical notebooks and the account book of his estate. Also represented are his father, Gad Day, with correspondence, accounts and deeds (1811-1844), his brother Horace Day, and Hannah Palfrey Cole Rice with a letter (1819) to her daughter, Sarah Cazneau Rice Seaver about the death of her child.

Morris's political career, his dairy business activities, and his municipal and civic concerns in Connecticut are documented. The letters and papers of family members involved in the settlement of the American frontier and in the Civil War are included, as are papers of Morris's father, Luzon Burritt Morris, a governor of Connecticut.

Records of 113 individuals, firms, and estates whose business the firm handled make up the business section of the papers. Also included are a small amount of Dyer White's family correspondence (1784-1836) and college lecture notes, account books related to church activities (1822-1837), and other miscellaneous papers of Henry White.

Chiefly correspondence of the Wadsworth, Silliman, and Trumbull families. Of note in the eighteenth century correspondence is the exchange between Joseph Trumbull and Jeremiah Wadsworth concerning the business of the Commissary General during the American Revolution. Major correspondents in the later period are Faith Trumbull Wadsworth, Benjamin and Harriet Trumbull Silliman and their children. There is a long series of ninety-one letters (1806-1846) to Eliza Winthrop Sebor from Faith Trumbull Wadsworth and also a diary kept by her between 1803 and 1846. Another by John Noyes Wadsworth from 1790 to 1815 is largely made up of his financial accounts from Durham, Conn. and Genesee, New York. This volume was continued (1815-1835) by John's son, Wedworth. Also in the papers are miscellaneous legal and financial papers, clippings and memorabilia.

The collection consists of correspondence, poems, estate papers, notebooks, account books, logbooks, legal books, and miscellaneous papers of the Lay, Parker, Pratt, Shaler, Smith, Stark, Tyler, and Williams families of eastern Connecticut.

Correspondence, writings, sermons, diaries, account books, poems, and notes of George Colton of West Hartford, Connecticut and four of his sons. The principal figure in the papers is Henry Martyn Colton, who graduated from Yale College in 1848 and established schools in Middletown, Connecticut and New York City. Included in his papers are college lecture notes, sermons together with outlines and notes, poems, diaries, and travel writings.

The papers consist of correspondence, pamphlets, printed material, scrapbooks, sermons, and other papers relating to members of the Carrington family. Henry Beebee Carrington (1824-1912) and his grandfather, David Lewis Beebe (1763-1803), are two central figures in the papers. Material relating to David Lewis Beebe, including essays and sermons, documents his religious duties in Connecticut and family concerns in Ohio. Henry Beebee Carrington material includes correspondence, a diary, a letterbook, maps, pamphlets, scrapbooks, and other items documenting his experiences as a student at Yale University, as a lawyer practicing in Ohio, and as a commanding officer for Union forces during the Civil War. Carrington's role in military campaigns and treaty negotiations with Indians of the American West is also documented. His design of Fort Philip Kearney, the site of a famous massacre, and treaty negotiations with the Flathead Indians of Montana are detailed in pamphlets, scrapbooks and other papers.

Correspondence, diaries, wills, inventories of estates, financial records, daguerreotypes, drawings, clippings and genealogies of three branches and of seventeen individual members of the Wells family, whose founder William Wells migrated to Brattleboro, Vermont from England in 1793. Major figures in the papers are Jane Wells Howard Green (1808-1884), Edward Watkins Wells (1819-1898) and James Hancox Wells (1774-1857). The diaries of five family members include accounts of travel both in the United States and Europe during the nineteenth century. A three volume diary kept by Jane Green from 1827 to 1830 describes her visit to family in England. Her papers also include extensive correspondence (1845-1904) with various women in the Howard family discussing family affairs and their daily lives, as well as household accounts, an inventory and a photograph. A steamboat trip to Florida (ca. 1855-1860) is described in the diary of Edward Watkinson Wells who also writes of social life in Hartford between 1856 and 1860. Also by Edward Watkinson Wells are a large number of drawings, correspondence, a will, and financial accounts. The papers of James Hancox Wells includes financial records, correspondence, and a daguerreotype. The Wells family material is made up of genealogical records, financial papers, and memorabilia.

Correspondence and other papers relating to members of the Burr family of Fairfield, Conn. Principal figures represented in the papers include Aaron Burr (1756-1836), soldier, politician and third vice-president of the United States; and his father, the Reverend Aaron Burr (1716-1757), scholar, clergyman, and second president of the College of New Jersey (later Princeton). These papers were formerly part of the Annie Burr Jennings Memorial Collection (MS 687). See also the Bidwell Family Papers (MS 79) and the Reeve Family Papers (MS 686).

Principal figures include Barnabas Bidwell (1763-1833), lawyer and politician in Massachusetts and Kingston, Ontario; and his son, Marshall Spring Bidwell (1799-1872), lawyer and politician in Kingston and New York City.

The most prominent figures in the collection are William Walton Woolsey (1766-1839), land owner and merchant in New York City; his son, Theodore Dwight Woolsey (1801-1889), Greek scholar, political theorist and president of Yale College; and Theodore Salisbury Woolsey (1852-1929), professor of international law at Yale Law School, son of Theodore Dwight Woolsey. The papers of William Walton Woolsey contain extensive business correspondence, ledgers, legal papers, documents relating to land sales in New York and Ohio, as well as family and personal letters. Since he was engaged in the importation of sugar, cotton and hardware, some of his business correspondence is political with discussions of the Jay Treaty of 1794, the problems of piracy, American neutrality in the 1790s and the general politics of the period. Important correspondents are Chauncey Goodrich, Archibald Gracie, Eli Whitney, Noah Webster, Elihu and Nathaniel Chauncey, Oliver Wolcott, Benjamin Tallmadge, Jedidiah Morse, James Roosevelt, John A. Schuyler, Comfort Sands, John Broome, and Nicholas Bayard. The papers of Theodore Dwight Woolsey contain his writings on Greek language and literature, the Bible, international law and the texts of his sermons.

The collection contains correspondence and other papers of President George Washington, Martha Dandridge Washington, and William Augustine Washington, half brother of George Washington.

Correspondence and other papers of several members of the Sergeant family of Massachusetts and Connecticut. Major correspondents include George Sergeant (1822-), of Northampton, Massachusetts; his sister, Catharine Sedgwick Sergeant De Forest, married to Dr. Henry A. De Forest; and his daughter, Catharine De Forest Sergeant (1848-). The collection contains correspondence on female education in Syria and education of women in the United States. Later letters, mainly in the 1870s, describe the experiences of women as students and as teachers in Princeton, New Jersey, Chicago, West Haven, Connecticut and elsewhere. Also includes family photographs and daguerreotypes.

The diaries and account books in the collection include the family expense book (1739-1819) of Helen Kortright Brasher, a diary kept by Judith Brasher in 1766, extracts from a journal of a cruise in a privateer (1813), a diary (1837-1848) possibly belonging to Robert Colgate II, and a journal (1856-1858) of a voyage to China. Among the genealogical information is a biography of Helena Kortright Brasher written by Craig Colgate, Jr.

Correspondence, legal and financial papers, a diary and miscellaneous items of the Bronson family of Washington, Connecticut. The largest part of the papers are those of Moseley Virgil Bronson (1806-1890), documenting his career as an officer of the Connecticut militia and as a teacher in New York and Connecticut. Of particular interest are the letters of Edna Moseley Todd, who moved to Virginia in 1821, and whose letters to various members of the family describe her life as a mother and school teacher, as well as offering comments on slavery and abolitionism. Also in the papers is the diary of Maria N. Fowler Ford, recording her experience as a physician's wife in Hawaii (1854-1858) and in New York and Connecticut (1858-1861). There are also miscellaneous papers of the Hollister family.

The papers consist of correspondence, writings, genealogical notes, and other papers, principally of Edward Elbridge Salisbury, philologist, orientalist, and genealogist. Included are materials on various branches of Salisbury's family gathered in his genealogical research. Also included are papers and correspondence of Josiah Salisbury (1781-1826), Abigail Breese Salisbury (1780-1866), and business papers of Samuel Salisbury (1739-1818) and Stephen Salisbury (1746-1829). In addition there are also letters and papers of other family members.

The papers consist of correspondence, writings, legal and financial material, congressional papers, family memorabilia, and other papers of various members of the Evarts family of Vermont, Boston, and New York. The principal figures, however, are Jeremiah Evarts (1781-1831), author, editor, lawyer, and philanthropist, and his son, William Maxwell Evarts (1818-1901), lawyer and statesman. The papers of Jeremiah Evarts relate to his work and writings on Congregational orthodoxy, his travels for the American Board of Foreign Missions, and his efforts on behalf of American Indians. His correspondents include family members, fellow members of the Yale Class of 1802, and many well-known clergymen, lawyers, statesmen, and missionaries.

The principal figures in these papers are Peter Verstille of Wethersfield and Hartford, Connecticut, his wife Naomi Ridgway Verstille, their children and grandchildren. Most of the papers consist of correspondence, but also included are financial and legal papers, among them accounts of the estate of Peter Verstille and lists of house furnishings. The largest part of the correspondence is the exchange of letters between Nancy and Charlotte Verstille, grandaughters of Peter Verstille. Both were teachers and discuss their experiences at schools in various parts of New England and the South. The letters of Nancy Verstille also include an account of an operation performed in 1817. The Dabney family of Massachusetts were major correspondents and their letters contain a description of the bankruptcy of the family in 1818.

Correspondence, papers, and genealogical notes pertaining to the Williams family of Connecticut. The major figures represented in the collection are William Williams (1731-1811), Thomas Wheeler Williams (1789-1874), and William Williams (1862-1947). The collection also contains letters of four presidents.

Papers of the Goodyear family of Connecticut of whom the principal figures are Edward Bassett Goodyear of Naugatuck, Ellsworth D. S. Goodyear, a Civil War general, and Watson Andrews Goodyear, a geologist.The papers of Edward B. Goodyear contain extensive family correspondence including forty-three letters written between 1855 and 1872 by his mother, Esther M. Bassett Goodyear. His papers also contain autobiographical notes and financial documents. Ellsworth D.S. Goodyear, who was a Civil War general is represented by diaries, including one (1863-1865) in the Civil War period and reminiscences. There is also a diary kept by F. Wilbur Goodyear while he was imprisoned in Andersonville. The papers of Watson Andrews Goodyear contain geological reports on various sites in the West (1865-1873) and an account of a series of earthquakes in El Salvador (1879-1880).

The papers represent four generations of the Nehemiah Waterman family of Norwich, Connecticut. The principal figures are Elijah Waterman and his son Thomas Tileston Waterman, both Congregational ministers. The papers of Elijah Waterman consist of correspondence with other ministers, approximately 125 sermons, and histories of Woodstock, Pomfret, Lebanon and Hampton, Connecticut. The papers of Thomas Tileston Waterman also contain professional correspondence, sermons and religious publications. His wife, Delia Storrs Waterman's journals for the years ca.1848-1880, as well as essays, poetry and financial papers are included. There is also a series a scrapbooks kept by their son, Thomas Storrs Waterman with clippings and notes on politics, religion and history. General family correspondence, chiefly for the period 1795-1876, genealogical papers, photographs, financial documents, printed matter and memorabilia complete the collection.

Correspondence, financial records, and legal documents of the Tomlinson and related families of Connecticut. Prominent in the correspondence are six letters (1826-1853) by Gideon Tomlinson, governor of Connecticut (1826-1831) and a series of Civil War letters (1862-1865) by Albert DeForest of the 14th Connecticut Volunteers. Also a farming diary (1793-1805) kept probably by Joel Beard of Stratford, and the daybook (1805-1812) of Curtiss Tomlinson, a farmer of Huntington. Additional account books include one kept (1843-1848) by Gideon Tomlinson for the account of Mrs. Clarina Brewster, and another kept by Stephen Tomlinson, a dyer of Stratford, from 1814 to 1845.

Peyton R. Gilbert is the central figure in these family papers which begin with his father Samuel Gilbert, a judge in Tolland County, Connecticut. The family was based in Gilead and Hebron, Connecticut. The largest part of the papers contains legal and financial papers from the law practices of both Peyton R. and Samuel Gilbert. Also included is family correspondence, with a number of Civil War letters from David J. Gilbert as well as letters from members of the family in the West. Also in the papers are the diaries (1878-1884) of Ralph P. Gilbert and the papers of the Gilead Ecclesiastical Society, including letters from Albert W. and Nellie P. Clark who were living as missionaries in Bohemia in 1872.

Papers of three related families: the Johnson and Gibbs families of New Haven, Connecticut, and the Van Cleve family of New Jersey. The principal figure is Ebenezer Alfred Johnson, professor of Greek and Latin Literature at the University of the City of New York (1839-1891). His papers consist of personal and professional correspondence and a small amount of printed matter and records relating to the University of the City of New York. Included in his personal correspondence are letters from Josiah W. Gibbs, his nephew, a lengthy series of courtship letters with Margaret Fox Van Cleve, whom he married in 1842, and additional letters on the birth of their children (1843-1849). Two friends who figure in the personal correspondence are Thomas A. Thacher and Louis Janin. Among his notable professional correspondents are: Ethan Allen Andrews, Theodore Frelinghuysen, Isaac Ferris, Elias Loomis, Taylor Lewis, and George S. Parker. On matters concerning Yale University, he corresponded with George E. Day, Edward C. Herrick, and James Luce Kingsley. The major part of the collection is made up of correspondence among various branches of the family and contains the letters of Johnson's two wives and his children with intimate details of family life and relationships in the 19th century. Three members of the family who travelled to Europe (1866-1869) recorded their impressions in family letters. There is also a series of letters from Europe (1877-1879) by Alfred V. C. Johnson.

Correspondence, diaries, and financial and legal papers of three generations of the Selden Huntington family of Old Lyme and Middlesex County, Connecticut. The papers document Selden Huntington's business fortunes in East Coast shipping and land speculation in Maine, his relationship with his son Joseph Selden, breaking up of his marriage to his second wife Jeanette Stewart, and social and religious activities in the community. Joseph Selden Huntington's letters record his years at school in Kents Hill, Maine, his attempts to establish himself in business in New York City and Springfield, Massachusetts, and his travels in the South. Also included in the papers are Joseph Selden Huntington's diary, notebook, scrapbook, and love letters from his freshman to his junior year at Yale College.

Principal figures in these papers are Noah Webster, the lexicographer, and his son William Greenleaf Webster. Also included are papers pertaining to the G. C. Merriam Company and the publication of Noah Webster's dictionaries and grammars. Family correspondence includes twenty-two letters written by Noah Webster to his son between 1835 and 1843 while the latter was in Cincinnati, Ohio, and La Fayette, Indiana, selling his father's books. The papers of William Greenleaf Webster make up two-thirds of the papers and include extensive correspondence during the Civil War on the death of his sons and his subsequent divorce. The letters of both these sons to their father before the war describes their beginning careers: Eugene as a civil engineer in Maryland and Stuart attempting land speculation and other occupations in Minneapolis. Both sons were killed while serving in the Civil War, Eugene fighting for the Confederacy and Stuart for the Union. The sixty-five letters of William Greenleaf Webster's second wife, Sara Appleton Webster to Judge Bristol, who was the executor of William G. Correspondence of Tapping Reeve, jurist, author, and teacher of law, and of his wife, Sarah Burr Reeve, sister of Aaron Burr (1756-1836). Correspondents include Joel Barlow, Aaron Burr, Peter Colt, Jonathan Edwards, Pierpont Edwards, Timothy Edwards, and John Cotton Smith. The letters relate to both family and business affairs.

The papers include correspondence, diaries, notebooks, writings, wills, scrapbooks, albums, genealogical records and memorabilia of several generations of the Schwab family. Principal figures are Gustav Friedrich Schwab; his wife, Eliza Catherine Von Post Schwab; and their son, John Christopher Schwab. The papers of Gustav Friedrich Schwab include business correspondence during his presidency of the firm of Oelrichs & Co. in New York and travel diaries (1843-1846). An additional diary (1883) records his travels during the opening excursion of the Northern Pacific Railroad. The papers of his wife contain an autograph album and diaries (1847-1877). The papers also include material of the German poet Gustav Benjamin Schwab, who was the grandfather of John C. Schwab. The papers of John C. Schwab include his student notebooks both in the United States and in Germany, with half of one notebook (1887-1888) devoted to the lectures of the historian Heinrich von Treitschke.

The Day family papers consist of correspondence, account books, diaries, journals, lectures, manuscripts, notes, sermons, and related papers of the Day family, 1767-1929. The personal lives, academic activities, and professional careers of several family members are documented, including Reverend Jeremiah Day (1737-1806), Reverend Jeremiah Day (1773-1867), Henry Noble Day (1808-1890), Mills Day (1783-1812), and others.

The papers consist of correspondence, writings, topical files, biographical files, scrapbooks, and other material relating to William Kent's businesses, political activities, and family. The papers document his activities as a municipal reformer in Chicago and Northern California; his interests in conservation, recreation, and public control of water power; his campaigns for election to Congress; his service in the U.S. House of Representatives and on the U.S. Tariff Commission; and his business interests in cattle ranches in Nebraska and Nevada. The papers also include materials relating to the activities of Kent's wife, Elizabeth Thacher Kent, Mrs. Kent's family, and the Kent children and grandchildren. Papers of Elizabeth Thacher Kent document her interests in women's suffrage, the Equal Rights Amendment, and international peace and her participation in the National Woman's Party and the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom.
