The collection consists of correspondence, legal and financial papers, diaries, writings, autographs, and other papers documenting the lives and activities of several generations of Strong family members and related Fowler, Pond, and Huntington families of Massachusetts and Connecticut. The bulk of the collection concerns the extended family of Phinehas Strong of Northampton, Massachusetts, and relates to the teaching and agriculture pursuits of family members in Ohio, Michigan, Virginia, and Louisiana. The career of Josephine Strong, a teacher of freedmen, is highlighted. Papers of the Connecticut Strong families relate primarily to the colonial era and Revolutionary War; Milford town history; and Chatham, Milford, and Norwich church history.

Papers of several branches of the Peck family in Connecticut. Half of the collection is made up of the papers of the Ambrose Peck family (1691-1911) including correspondence, diaries, account books, legal papers, photographs, and memorabilia. Noteworthy are letters on the Battle of Bunker Hill and the War of 1812, as well as diaries by Abby Ann Hyde Peck from her school days, 1824-1832, and her old age, 1874-1883. Another member of the family represented is Tracy Peck (1785-1862) an important public figure in Bristol, Connecticut, and active in the Congregational Church. The papers of Epaphroditus Peck contain lecture notes taken while he was attending Yale Law School (1903-1908) and family correspondence. Miscellaneous papers (1812-1907) of other members of the family make up the remainder of the collection.

The Park family papers are composed of correspondence and other papers of Park family members and of correspondence and other documents collected and preserved by Park family members for their autograph or historical value. The papers include six volumes of mounted autograph items as well as unbound documents of American and European authors, scientists, military leaders, statesmen, and clergymen. The papers include a large collection of documents relating to the history, faculty, and administration of Phillips Academy, Andover, Massachusetts and of the Andover Theological Seminary. Particularly numerous are the personal and professonal papers of Eliphalet Pearson. The papers also include numerous documents of John Hoff Duke of Charleston, South Carolina, as well as estate papers of Augustine Prevost and documents relating to the early history of Wrentham, Massachusetts. Papers of Park family members include intra-family correspondence and items of related Burr, Edwards, and Reeve family members. Marion Edwards Park's correspondence documents her college years at Bryn Mawr. Correspondence with M. Carey Thomas in the 1920s details the transition of leadership at the college.

Correspondence, writings, speeches, diaries, clippings, printed matter, sermons, and other papers of two centuries of Beecher family members. The papers relate principally to Henry Ward Beecher (1813-1887), popular 19th century clergyman and orator, and members of his family. Among those represented are his father, the Reverend Lyman Beecher (1775-1863), clergyman; his brothers, Edward Beecher (1803-1895), educator and antislavery leader, and Thomas Kinnicut Beecher (1824-1900) and Charles Beecher (1815-1900), both clergyman and antislavery activist; and his sisters, Harriett Elizabeth (Beecher) Stowe (1811-1896), author, Catherine Esther Beecher (1800-1878), pioneer educator and writer on 'domestic economy,' and Isabella Homes (Beecher) Hooker (1822-1907), well-known suffragist. Also included are papers relating to the Scoville family (mainly Annie Beecher Scoville, 1866-1953, teacher and lecturer), as well as other related families. The papers cover an extremely wide range of cultural, political, social, and religious issues and topics of 19th and early 20th century America and include correspondence from a large number of well-known men and women. The papers were previously known as the Beecher-Scoville Family Papers.

Correspondence (1806-1870), deeds (1707-1857) to property in Connecticut, and miscellaneous papers. The bulk of the correspondence is that of William Chauncey Fowler (1793-1881), an educator. Principal correspondents include George Sewall Boutwell, Lewis Cass, Salmon Portland Chase, Rufus Choate, Schuyler Colfax, Horace Mann, Gideon Algernon Mantell, and Truman Smith. Also in the papers is an account book (1854-1866) of Crampton and Fowler, manufacturers and farmers of Northford, Connecticut and a collection of autographs, including one of John Quincy Adams.

This collection is made up of the papers of ten individual members and six branches of the Seymour family: the Day family, Parsons-Dean families, Watkins-Law families, Leggett-Seymour-Doolittle families, St. John family, and Howard family. The largest sections are those of Thomas Day Seymour, Charles Seymour (1885-1963), and Charles Seymour, Jr. The collection represents six generations of an intellectually and socially prominent family and through correspondence and diaries offers detailed evidence on social life and customs in New Haven, Hartford and nineteenth-century Ohio.

The papers consist of the research files of Ulrich Bonnell Phillips, an author and history professor. The papers include Phillips's notes and transcripts of historical source materials and the collected papers of several southern families from 1712-1933. The collected papers include correspondence, account books, business records, farm and plantation records, diaries, photographs, and other papers which focus primarily on the years 1790-1865, and the Shenandoah Valley region of Virginia and the Piedmont region of Georgia. Phillips's own papers in the collection include a small amount of correspondence, lecture notes, typescript versions of published essays and reviews, transcripts of materials from various sources, his research notes arranged by topic, and related printed matter.

The papers consist of correspondence, financial records, addresses, sermons, writings, photographs, and other memorabilia of Yale President Timothy Dwight (1752-1817) and his family. Relatives in the Edwards, Hooker, Lyman, Strong, Woodbridge, and Woolsey families are represented. The largest quantity of correspondence documents the family life of John William Dwight, a fertilizer manufacturer. Papers of Timothy Dwight (1752-1817) and Timothy Dwight (1828-1916) concern Yale University. The travels of various family members are highlighted.

The papers consist of correspondence, lectures, notebooks, diaries, journals, and other material documenting the personal lives and professional careers of the Silliman family, including Benjamin Silliman (1779-1864) and Benjamin Silliman, Jr. (1816-1885). Personal material details family life, relationships, social activities, and cultural pursuits. Professional material details the academic and literary interests of the Sillimans, particularly in chemistry, physics, and geology. The evolution and development of science, the beginnings of scientific instruction at Yale, and many related topics are documented. Material relating to John Trumbull and the Trumbull Art Gallery at Yale is also included. Family letters and journals offer observations on local and national events, as exemplified by Maggie Lindsley's journal and letters with Benjamin Silliman relating to the Civil War.

Correspondence, financial papers and memorabilia of members of the Gibbs family. Of principal interest are thirteen letters (1783-1796) from Roger Sherman to his brother-in-law, Henry Gibbs, of which five (1789-1790) discuss the deliberations of the first Congress of the United States. Other figures represented in the papers are two Josiah Willard Gibbses (father and son) and Addison Van Name.

The records consist of correspondence, memoirs, notes, observations, and other writings of Thomas Clap concerning Yale College.

Correspondence, diaries, letterbooks, financial papers, writings, scrapbooks, and memorabilia of the Farnam family of New Haven, Connecticut, 1721-1929. The papers of Henry Farnam (1803-1883), and two of his sons, Henry Walcott Farnam (1853-1933) and William Whitman Farnam (1844-1929) form this collection. The papers of Henry Farnam include personal and professional correspondence concerning his family, life in New Haven, and the building of several canals and railroads in Connecticut and the Midwest. Materials documenting the New Haven and Northampton Company, Chicago and Rock Island Railroad, Mississippi and Missouri Valley Railroad, Northern Indiana Railroad, and Peoria and Bureau Valley Railroad is arranged here. The papers of Henry Walcott Farnam include personal and professional correspondence, financial papers, writings, subject files and scrapbooks relating to his family, life in New Haven, student and teaching experiences at Yale, membership in local, state, and national academic and reform organizations, and philanthropic activities on behalf of educational and charitable institutions. The papers of William Whitman Farnam include correspondence and topical files relating to family matters, Yale University, and New Haven Park Commission activities.

Correspondence, diaries and appointment books, and writings and notes, which reflect Henry Roseman Lang's career as professor of Romance Languages and Literature at Yale. The papers also contain correspondence, diaries, addresses books, and notes of his wife, Alice Derby Lang.

The papers consist of correspondence, research files (including notes, transcripts, and photocopies of historical documents), writings, photograph albums, and memorabilia relating to the personal life and professional career of American historian Charles McLean Andrews; his wife, Evangeline Walker Andrews; and other family members. More than half the correspondence is between family members. Charles Andrews's education and early career are detailed in correspondence with his parents, wife, and sisters. Evangeline Andrews's correspondence with her parents; her sister, Ethel Walker Smith; her husband; and her children concerns her Bryn Mawr activities, travels, historical and theatrical interests and writing, and the activities of family members. The correspondence also chronicles the development of the Ethel Walker School. Charles McLean Andrews's professional correspondents include former students, co-authors, fellow historians, librarians, and archivists. The professional correspondence is overwhelmingly incoming and reflects more of the correspondents' careers and activities than those of Andrews. Research and writings files detail Andrews's historical interests.

The papers consist of personal and professional correspondence, genealogical and professional research material and writings, and financial records of Elias Loomis and his sons Henry Bradford and Francis Engelsby Loomis. The papers record Elias Loomis' scientific studies, particularly in astronomy and meteorology. Genealogical notes and writings document the family history through the descendants of Joseph Loomis. Correspondence concerning Elias Loomis' father, sisters, and brothers, who were pioneer settlers of Alton, Illinois, details the family's interest in developments in American politics, education, travel, and social conditions from the 1830s through the 1870s.

Correspondence, writings, diaries, account books, and miscellanea of the Hadley family, including materials relating to James Hadley, 1821-1872, a professor of Greek at Yale University; Anne Loring Twining Hadley, 1816-1897, wife of James Hadley; Helen Harrison Morris Hadley, 1864-1939, wife of Arthur Twining Hadley, 1856-1930, president of Yale University, 1899-1921; and Morris Hadley, 1894-1979, the son of Arthur T. and Helen H. Hadley.

The papers consist of correspondence, business and legal documents, sermons, lectures, and other writings of the Goodrich family, descendants of Elizur Goodrich (1734-1797), and members of related Webster, Coe, Ellsworth, and Fowler families. The bulk of the correspondence concerns Chauncey Allen Goodrich's publication and copyright of an abridgement and revision of Webster's dictionary and the resulting disagreements among the heirs of Noah Webster. The papers also highlight Elizur Goodrich's (1761-1849) investments in land; family courtships, including that of Noah Webster and Rebecca Greenleaf; the ministerial careers of Elizur Goodrich (1734-1797), Noah Coe, Chauncey Goodrich (1817-1868), and William Henry Goodrich; Chauncey Allen Goodrich's teaching at Yale; Henry L. Ellsworth's purchases of land in Indiana; and the domestic affairs of several family households.

Four generations of a Connecticut and Massachusetts family, beginning with Josiah Day who is represented by his surveyor's notebook, 1742-1743. The principal figure is his great-grandson, George Edward Day,clergyman and professor at the Yale Divinity School, 1863-1895. Included in the papers are his correspondence, a diary (1832-1837), genealogical notebooks and the account book of his estate. Also represented are his father, Gad Day, with correspondence, accounts and deeds (1811-1844), his brother Horace Day, and Hannah Palfrey Cole Rice with a letter (1819) to her daughter, Sarah Cazneau Rice Seaver about the death of her child.

Correspondence, writings, sermons, diaries, account books, poems, and notes of George Colton of West Hartford, Connecticut and four of his sons. The principal figure in the papers is Henry Martyn Colton, who graduated from Yale College in 1848 and established schools in Middletown, Connecticut and New York City. Included in his papers are college lecture notes, sermons together with outlines and notes, poems, diaries, and travel writings.

Correspondence and other papers of several members of the Sergeant family of Massachusetts and Connecticut. Major correspondents include George Sergeant (1822-), of Northampton, Massachusetts; his sister, Catharine Sedgwick Sergeant De Forest, married to Dr. Henry A. De Forest; and his daughter, Catharine De Forest Sergeant (1848-). The collection contains correspondence on female education in Syria and education of women in the United States. Later letters, mainly in the 1870s, describe the experiences of women as students and as teachers in Princeton, New Jersey, Chicago, West Haven, Connecticut and elsewhere. Also includes family photographs and daguerreotypes.

Correspondence, legal and financial papers, a diary and miscellaneous items of the Bronson family of Washington, Connecticut. The largest part of the papers are those of Moseley Virgil Bronson (1806-1890), documenting his career as an officer of the Connecticut militia and as a teacher in New York and Connecticut. Of particular interest are the letters of Edna Moseley Todd, who moved to Virginia in 1821, and whose letters to various members of the family describe her life as a mother and school teacher, as well as offering comments on slavery and abolitionism. Also in the papers is the diary of Maria N. Fowler Ford, recording her experience as a physician's wife in Hawaii (1854-1858) and in New York and Connecticut (1858-1861). There are also miscellaneous papers of the Hollister family.

The papers consist of correspondence, writings, genealogical notes, and other papers, principally of Edward Elbridge Salisbury, philologist, orientalist, and genealogist. Included are materials on various branches of Salisbury's family gathered in his genealogical research. Also included are papers and correspondence of Josiah Salisbury (1781-1826), Abigail Breese Salisbury (1780-1866), and business papers of Samuel Salisbury (1739-1818) and Stephen Salisbury (1746-1829). In addition there are also letters and papers of other family members.

The principal figures in these papers are Peter Verstille of Wethersfield and Hartford, Connecticut, his wife Naomi Ridgway Verstille, their children and grandchildren. Most of the papers consist of correspondence, but also included are financial and legal papers, among them accounts of the estate of Peter Verstille and lists of house furnishings. The largest part of the correspondence is the exchange of letters between Nancy and Charlotte Verstille, grandaughters of Peter Verstille. Both were teachers and discuss their experiences at schools in various parts of New England and the South. The letters of Nancy Verstille also include an account of an operation performed in 1817. The Dabney family of Massachusetts were major correspondents and their letters contain a description of the bankruptcy of the family in 1818.

Papers of three related families: the Johnson and Gibbs families of New Haven, Connecticut, and the Van Cleve family of New Jersey. The principal figure is Ebenezer Alfred Johnson, professor of Greek and Latin Literature at the University of the City of New York (1839-1891). His papers consist of personal and professional correspondence and a small amount of printed matter and records relating to the University of the City of New York. Included in his personal correspondence are letters from Josiah W. Gibbs, his nephew, a lengthy series of courtship letters with Margaret Fox Van Cleve, whom he married in 1842, and additional letters on the birth of their children (1843-1849). Two friends who figure in the personal correspondence are Thomas A. Thacher and Louis Janin. Among his notable professional correspondents are: Ethan Allen Andrews, Theodore Frelinghuysen, Isaac Ferris, Elias Loomis, Taylor Lewis, and George S. Parker. On matters concerning Yale University, he corresponded with George E. Day, Edward C. Herrick, and James Luce Kingsley. The major part of the collection is made up of correspondence among various branches of the family and contains the letters of Johnson's two wives and his children with intimate details of family life and relationships in the 19th century. Three members of the family who travelled to Europe (1866-1869) recorded their impressions in family letters. There is also a series of letters from Europe (1877-1879) by Alfred V. C. Johnson.

The papers consist of correspondence, writings, research notes, teaching materials, clippings and other printed material, photographs, and memorabilia which document the personal life and professional career of Sherman Kent. The papers highlight Kent's student years and teaching career at Yale and his lifelong research in French history. Kent's career in intelligence is also represented in these papers, though they contain no official records from the O.S.S. or the C.I.A..

The papers include correspondence, diaries, notebooks, writings, wills, scrapbooks, albums, genealogical records and memorabilia of several generations of the Schwab family. Principal figures are Gustav Friedrich Schwab; his wife, Eliza Catherine Von Post Schwab; and their son, John Christopher Schwab. The papers of Gustav Friedrich Schwab include business correspondence during his presidency of the firm of Oelrichs & Co. in New York and travel diaries (1843-1846). An additional diary (1883) records his travels during the opening excursion of the Northern Pacific Railroad. The papers of his wife contain an autograph album and diaries (1847-1877). The papers also include material of the German poet Gustav Benjamin Schwab, who was the grandfather of John C. Schwab. The papers of John C. Schwab include his student notebooks both in the United States and in Germany, with half of one notebook (1887-1888) devoted to the lectures of the historian Heinrich von Treitschke.

Papers of John Maudgridge Snowden Allison, author and professor of history at Yale University. The papers contain correspondence, teaching materials, and research files, including original letters and documents by French political figures of the 18th and 19th century. Among these are François Guizot, Alphonse Larmartine, King Louis Philippe, Chrétien Malesherbes, and Adolphe Thiers. Also included is a promissory note by Talleyrand and documents signed by Louis XVI. Among his personal correspondents are Léon Allégret, Henri Focillon, Henri Malo, Richard L. Tighe, Chauncey Brewster Tinker, Gilbert M. Troxell, and Henri Peyre. Two-thirds of the papers are made up of teaching materials and include lectures and lecture notes, student papers, card files and essays, articles and reviews on French history. Also included are papers relating to Allison's army service during World War I and extensive correspondence with his mother from his school days through World War I.

The papers consist of correspondence, diaries, legal and financial records, writings, memorabilia, and pictorial material which document the activities of four generations of Bunnell and Sterling family members living primarily in Connecticut and New York. Correspondence, diaries, writings, and memorabilia document the Yale academic careers of Sterling Haight and Frank Scott Bunnell and John W. Sterling, the Civil War service of Rufus W. Bunnell and Henry T. Plant, and the travels of family members to destinations including the Southern and Western United States, Europe, and Hawaii. Correspondence, legal and financial records, diaries, and pictorial material document the respective architectural, engineering, and teaching careers of Rufus W., Sterling Haight, and Frank Scott Bunnell. The activities of female members of the Bunnell and Sterling families as mothers, wives, and daughters are documented by material thoughout the papers.

Schoolmaster, postmaster and town clerk in Newtown, Connecticut. The papers relate to Baldwin's various occupations and consist largely of account books, legal documents and miscellaneous items recording, among others, the cost of education, charges for lots in the Burying Ground and aid to the poor. Of particular interest are two documents concerning slaves and one concerning an illegitimate child.

The papers consist of John Quincy Bradish's family correspondence and papers, student papers and other writings, Yale and other memorabilia, photographs and printed matter. Much of the collection consists of records, correspondence, charts and research notes concerning Bradish family genealogy.

Papers of Edward Washburn Hopkins (1857-1932), professor of Sanskrit and comparative philology at Yale; and Clark Hopkins, member of the classics department and director of the Dura-Europos expeditions with smaller amounts of material on Allen Hopkins, Edward Lewis Hopkins (1898-), Francis Washburn Hopkins, (1896-), Samuel Hopkins (1756-1782), and Edward Allen Low (d.1880). The Edward Washburn Hopkins papers contain writings on religion in India and classical Greece and the Clark Hopkins papers have an essay and photographs on excavations in Syria.

The papers consist of correspondence, journals and diaries, writings, legal and financial papers, and miscellanea of the William Dwight Whitney family, including William Dwight Whitney (1827-1894), his wife Elizabeth Wooster Baldwin Whitney (1824-1912), his brother Josiah Dwight Whitney (1819-1896), and his father Josiah Dwight Whitney (1786-1869). William Dwight Whitney material includes several hundred letters with his wife, journals and diaries (1843-1893), and a small quanity of professional papers. Material of his brother Josiah includes a geological survey of the Upper Mississippi (1862), and correspondence relating to the first systematic exploration and mapping of the American West. Information relating to Benjamin Silliman and the National Academy of Sciences is also documented. His family correspondence includes several hundred letters with William Dwight Whitney and their father, Josiah.

The principal figures in this collection are Jedidiah Morse (1761-1826) and his sons Samuel Finley Breese Morse (1791-1872) and Richard Cary Morse (1795-1868). More than half of the collection is made up of correspondence (1779-1868) among members of the family. Also included are legal and financial papers, sermons by Jedidiah and Richard Cary Morse, travel journals, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, printed matter, and photographs.

The papers consist of correspondence, articles, reports, notes, lectures, memorabilia, and other papers of Charles Templeman Loram, educator and professor of education in South Africa and at Yale. Included are papers both from his work at Yale and his earlier work as an educational administrator in South Africa. There is also one box of records from the South Africa Native Affairs Commission.

Correspondence (primarily letters received) and other papers of David Daggett, Connecticut lawyer, jurist, politician, teacher, and author. The papers relate primarily to Daggett's legal and political activities and to Federalist Party politics. Important correspondents include Simeon Baldwin, Abraham Bishop, Isaac Bronson, John C. Calhoun, Henry Clay, Charles Denison, Elizur Goodrich, Gideon Granger, Roger Griswold, Rufus King, William Leffingwell, Josiah Meigs, Timothy Pickering, Benjamin Rush, John Cotton Smith, Daniel Webster, William Wirt, and Oliver Wolcott.

Correspondence, notes, sermons, lectures, teaching materials, and memorabilia of Noah Porter. The major part of the correspondence, as well as of the other papers, deals with Porter's responsibilities as professor and president at Yale College. The few family letters are from his father, Rev. Noah Porter of Farmington, and from his wife, Mary Taylor Porter. His writings include lectures and sermons delivered at Yale College, 1871-1886. Also documenting his academic career are grade books, reports of Yale College committees, including one on the location of college buildings (1866), and papers relating to the American Education Society (1874-1889).

The papers consist almost entirely of family correspondence among Johnson, his wife, children, and parents, including letters from Johnson as a student at Yale University. Among the family correspondents is Theodore Dwight Woolsey, an uncle of Johnson's. Also in the papers are account books (1877-1894) and a small amount of correspondence with friends and professional associates.

The papers contain correspondence, family papers, diaries, sermons, photoprints, and other materials documenting the personal lives and professional careers of Joseph Dresser Wickham, Elizabeth Cooke Merwin Wickham and several Wickham, Merwin, Porter, and Roe relatives. The Wickham family papers have extensive material on such family subjects as relationships between brothers and sisters and parents and children, courtship, death, marriage, and the difficulties endured by stepmothers and clergymen's wives and on secondary education in the mid-nineteenth century, missionary work, religious conditions in Vermont, and Connecticut social life and customs.

Personal and professional papers of Samuel Clark Harvey.

The papers contain family correspondence, missionary correspondence, family papers, diaries, sermons, printed works, photoprints, and other materials documenting the lives and careers of Alfred Cox Roe, Emma Wickham Roe, Mary Abigail Roe, Walter Clark Roe, Mary Wickham Roe, Joseph Wickham Roe, Henry Roe Cloud, and several other Roe relatives. The Roe family papers have extensive material on family life, specifically concerning such subjects as relations between brothers and sisters and parents and children, courtship, marriage, stepmothering, health and illness, old age, death, and finances. The papers also document the educational, missionary, and pastoral careers of several members of the Roe family and the Indian mission work of the Women's Board of Domestic Missions of the Reformed Church in America.

The papers consist of correspondence, writings, printed material, lectures, notebooks, and miscellanea documenting the personal lives and professional careers of members of the Dana family. James Dwight Dana, a prominent American scientist, and his son, Edward Salisbury Dana are two primary figures in the papers.

Manuscripts and typewritten copies of newspaper articles, ships' logs and letterbooks in the Library of Congress relating to the slave trade after 1806, especially during the years 1810-1811, 1816-1821 and 1860-1863. These were collected but not used in connection with her Documents Illustrative of the Slave Trade, published 1930-1934.

The papers consist of correspondence, a diary, household accounts, and professional documents relating to William Terry; his wife, Maria Roxana Slocomb Terry; his sister, Esther Asenath Terry; and their family and friends in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and Minnesota.

The papers include correspondence (comprising over half of the collection), manuscripts of Samuel Wells Williams's Syllabic Dictionary of the Chinese Language, themes and lecture notes by Frederick Wells Williams, diaries, newspaper clippings, articles on China, maps, and pictures. The bulk of the correspondence relates to S. W. Williams, missionary, diplomat, and sinologue. The period between 1845 and 1855 has extensive correspondence with missionaries and with James Dwight Dana and Matthew C. Perry, whom Williams accompanied on his mission to open Japan and on his return visit in 1854. Williams's letters to friends and family comment on progress made and their reception in Japan. In 1856 Williams became secretary and interpreter to the American Legation in China and many of the letters refer to Chinese problems of the following 20 years. His correspondents include, in addition to Dana and Perry, Anson Burlingame, Hamilton Fish, Asa Gray, Frederick Low, William Bradford Reed, and William Henry Seward. Correspondence, diaries, record books, school essays, lectures, and other papers of James Darrach, 1806-1889, who established an academy in Fishkill, NY, and from 1855 to 1864 served as superintendent of the New York Hospital. Correspondents include Darrach's wife, Helena White Darrach, and his sons Bartow and William. Additional correspondence is from Mary Darrach Craig, James Darrach, Thomas Raftery, and members of the Craig family. Bartow Darrach is represented by 125 letters to members of his family concerning his medical career in private practice and as a Union Army surgeon during the Civil War. The papers contain material relating to the social history of Quincy, Illinois where he resided from 1859 to 1861; medical procedures used in the army; and the Vicksburg campaign.

The papers include correspondence, photographs, and writings which document the daily lives of the immediate family of John Rice and the activities of various members of the Blake and Seely families. Extensive correspondence concerns the construction and furnishing of the family home in Tarrytown, New York; of residences, travel, and schooling in California and Europe; and student life and teaching at the Sedgwick School, Yale University, Williams College, Acadia University, and Smith College.

The papers consist of correspondence relating to the founding of the American School for the Deaf and Dumb in Hartford, Connecticut in 1817 by Laurent Clerc at the invitation of Thomas H. Gallaudet. Included also is a diary in English kept by Clerc during his voyage to the United States from France (1816) together with transcriptions of newspaper accounts of his first address in the United States, newspaper clippings, legal and financial documents, student papers, and memorabilia. There are a few family and personal papers and autobiographical notes by Clerc (1857-1869). Principal correspondents are John Louis Cheverus, Thomas H. Gallaudet, Abbé Sicard, and Roberts Vaux.

Half of the papers consist of a diary (1815-1816) and notes kept while Garfield was a student at Yale University. Later material documents his activities as a teacher and as a clergyman. Included are notes on sermons, on classical literature, account books, a record of baptism, marriages and funerals (1826-1872), and papers on the New Haven Female Seminary and the Albany Female Seminary. Also included is the account book (1821-1825) of his wife, Ann Lyon Garfield.

An artificial collection of papers of Yale faculty members and students active in the academic fields of fine arts, literature, history, linguistics, classics, music, and architecture. Correspondence, writings, clippings, notes, photographs, and miscellanea are included.

Correspondence and papers of Alexander Stewart Webb which detail his personal, military, and academic activities. Webb's military service at Fort Pickens, Florida; as a member of the Army of the Potomac, and with General George Meade during the Civil War is documented, as is his tenure as president of the College of the City of New York.

A journal, short essays and notes, and fourteen letters written by Harvey Harris Bloom to members of his family and friends. The letters describe his life while he was teaching at an academy in Millington, New Jersey and his student years at Yale College (1859-1861) before he enlisted in the Union army. Bloom's journal as well as his writings are largely devoted to religious meditations, but also included are stories, poems, and disputes written while at Yale College.

The papers consist of correspondence, subject files, diaries, speeches and writings, and memorabilia chiefly relating to George Henry Nettleton's career as professor of English at Yale, his activities with the Yale Bureau in Paris and the American University Union, and his scholarly research and writings.

Missionary and teacher in Singapore, 1835-1844. Correspondence, a journal covering his years in Singapore, genealogical notes, a Malay lexicon and a Chinese-English vocabulary. Principal correspondents are Lyman Beecher, Horace Dickinson, Mercy Amelia Dickinson, Horace Greeley, Edward Everett Hale, Mary Ann Moseley Dickinson Perkins, and Lebbeus B. Ward.

Personal papers, research materials, and autographs collected by Feuillerat in connection with his literary studies. A major portion of the papers consists of material on Paul Bourget, novelist and critic, as well as the brother-in-law of Feuillerat. Included are manuscripts by Bourget and correspondence by and about him. Among the writers of the holograph letters collected by Feuillerat are Jean François Victor Aicard, Paul Claudel, Alfred Stanislaus Langlois Des Essarts, Octave Feuillet, Alexandre Dumas, Ernest Aimée Feydeau, Paul Hervieu, Jean A. A. Jusserand, and Francis Steegmuller.

The papers include correspondence, writings, lecture notes, student notebooks, research notes, memorabilia, and scrapbooks of clippings documenting William Lyon Phelps's career as a professor of English and popularizer of literature. Phelps's lecture notes and annotated volumes on English literature comprise half of the papers. The papers also include a small quantity of family papers relating to Phelps's father and wife.

The papers largely reflect William A. Larned's post as Professor of Rhetoric and English literature (1839-1862) at Yale College. Included are lecture notes, notebooks with freshman prize compositions, grade books, and a student resolution requesting that his portrait be painted (1847). In the small amount of correspondence are five letters from Larned to his aunt, Mrs. John Mason. One is from Salisbury, North Carolina where he taught, and the remainder are from Yale College on his teaching and religious ideas.

The principal figures in the papers are T. Lawrason Riggs and his grandfather, George Washington Riggs. The papers of T. Lawrason Riggs, a Catholic priest, consist of correspondence, research materials and manuscripts for two works: "Joan of Arc and the Church" and "Readings in Church Latin." Also included are a notebook, photographs and memorabilia. His principal correspondents are Clarence J. McCabe and Alfred Purcell who wrote on Joan of Arc. Also letters from John LaFarge, Hamilton Holt and others. The papers of George Washington Riggs consist of three bound volumes: an autograph album and commonplace book from his Yale College days (1828-1829) and a catalogue of the books in his library.

The papers consist of correspondence, diaries, writings, research, notes, scrapbooks, and other materials documenting Lounsbury's personal life and professional career as an author and educator of English literature at Yale University. Correspondence with Yale colleagues, students, authors, and officials details his academic and literary interests, and activity in the areas of international language and simplified spelling. Personal materials include letters relating to Lounsbury's Civil War experiences and diaries containing brief entries from 1856-1915.

Correspondence, diaries, notebooks, lectures, articles, essays, genealogical materials, photographs and other papers of William Henry Brewer, scientist, teacher, and writer.The collection spans Brewer's entire career including his student days at the Yale Analytical Laboratory, his work with the California State Geological Survey, his various teaching positions in California, New York and at Yale and all his other many and varied activities. Of special and specific interest are Brewer's letters to members of his family which chronicle his many trips and scientific expeditions, his correspondence with his colleagues, and the methodical and voluminous notes and diaries he kept on virtually everything he did or encountered.

The papers consist almost entirely of research materials and a Ph.D. thesis on Percy Bysshe Shelley together with typescript and galley-proofs of books about Shelley written by Walter Edwin Peck and published in 1926 and 1927. Among the small amount of personal papers are a diary for 1907, photographs, correspondence and memorabilia. Two account books from Ashtabula, Ohio (1830-1847) are also included.

Private journals, ledgers and scrapbooks kept by William H. Potter of Groton, Conn. and Brandon, Mississippi (1851-1955). The journals contain descriptions of his activities and discourses on religion and politics. A commonplace book (1837-1848) gives some information on his brief attendance at Yale and his stay at Bacon School. The papers contain an unidentified 1933 judicial diary and a Norwich, Conn. account book. The papers also contain a diary (1859-1861) and other materials of Kittie Potter.

The papers consist of letters written to Packer from fellow teachers, family, and business associates, plus financial, legal, and miscellaneous papers. The correspondence covers the years 1851-1858, when Packer was teaching school in West Mystic, Connecticut; Brandon, Mississippi; and Mystic Bridge, Connecticut. The letters contain news about teaching, discussions of spiritual and intellectual concerns, and remarks about places visited.

The family correspondence contains a long series of letters (1890-1894) from Marion Isabel Watrous before her marriage to Angell in 1894. Prominent among his professional correspondents are Charles Bakewell, John Dewey, William James, A.H. Pierce and George Dudley Seymour. Also included are papers relating to Angell's inauguration as president of Yale University and his term of office. Additional papers include minutes and reports of the Rockefeller Foundation and of the General Education Board (also endowed by Rockefeller funds) on both of which James R. Angell served as member and trustee. The minutes and reports of the General Education Board document its support for various programs to reorganize general education in the United States and to improve education for women, blacks and children. The minutes of the Rockefeller Foundation detail its support for research projects in the natural sciences and the humanities.

Correspondence, writings, lectures, notes, printed material, and other papers, principally of George Jarvis Brush (1831-1912), mineralogist, geologist, and educator; and of his son-in-law, Louis Valentine Pirsson (1860-1919), also a geologist. There are also papers of Brush's wife, Harriet Silliman Trumbull Brush and of other family members. A good deal of the papers are scientific in nature, with some relating to the early history of the Yale Sheffield Scientific School. Important correspondents include William H. Brewer, Charles F. Chandler, Josiah P. Cooke, Whitman Cross, James Dwight Dana, Timothy Dwight, Charles W. Eliot, Joseph Henry, Lyman Trumbull, Joseph Wharton, and Josiah Dwight Whitney.

Essentially a collection of over 200 letters written between 1837 and 1852 by Ethan Allen Andrews and his wife, Lucy Cowles Andrews, to their son, Horace. Ethan Allen Andrews (1787-1858) was an educatior who wrote a successful series of Latin textbooks, was active in Connecticut politics and public affairs, and also managed a farm in New Britain. The letters begin upon Horace's entrance to Yale College and in addition to parental advice contain progress reports from Ethan Allen Andrews on his scholarly activity and accounts of his publishing negotiations. Also in the papers are miscellaneous items relating to his interest in education and the classics, family photographs and a reminiscence by Ethan Allen Andrews II about and photographs of York Square, now the site of Payne Whitney Gymnasium.

Correspondence, addresses and writings, papers relating to the Yale School of the Fine Arts, and other papers of John F. Weir, artist, painter and first director of the Yale School of the Fine Arts, serving from 1869-1913. Correspondents include many persons prominent in the art world between 1870 and 1920. There is also much material on the origins and development of art education in this country and at Yale.

Correspondence, writings, lectures, and other papers of Daniel Coit Gilman, educator, university president, and author. Included are papers regarding Gilman's career at Yale, the University of California, and Johns Hopkins University. Important correspondents include Charles M. Andrews, James Dwight Dana, William Henry Brewer, Timothy Dwight, Benjamin Silliman, Theodore Dwight Woolsey, and Andrew Dickson White.

The principal figure is Francis Wayland (1826-1904) whose early career as a lawyer and justice of the peace in Worcester, Massachusetts is reflected in miscellaneous legal and financial papers (1850-1859). Four poems (1897-1898) by Francis Wayland for various Bar Committee meetings are in the papers. Also included are a few letters from David Josiah Brewer and Benjamin D. Silliman, and household bills and receipts. His father, Francis Wayland, is represented by a notebook, kept by George Park Fisher, recording Wayland's lectures at Brown University on "Mental Philosophy and the Evidences of Christianity".

Correspondence and memorabilia documenting the personal and professional life of Robert Porter Keep, a teacher of Greek and a school administrator. The papers also document the life and work of other members of the Keep, Porter, and Haines families including: Samuel Porter, Sarah Porter, and Margaret Haines Keep. The papers document, especially through correspondence with his parents, Keep's student days at Yale College, his religious training, his early teaching duties, his travels and studies in Europe, and his scholarly work and later teaching. Keep's father John, a teacher at the American Asylum for the Deaf and Dumb in Hartford, Connecticut and his mother Rebecca write of their own work and of religion, health, and other family news from Hartford and Farmington, Connecticut. The papers include letters from Yale classmates, notably William Scranton, and from family members prominent in educational circles; Samuel Porter, a teacher of the deaf; Sarah Porter, founder of Miss Porter's School; and Noah Porter, president of Yale University. The papers also include many business letters to Samuel Porter concerning his land holdings in Missouri and correspondence of Margaret Haines Keep, the wife of Robert Porter Keep, prior to her marriage. These include letters concerning family life in Elizabeth, New Jersey and Brooklyn, New York and student life at Miss Porter's School.

The papers consist chiefly of notes, manuscripts, documents, minutes of parliamentary committees, pamphlets and other materials collected by Hajo Holborn in connection with research on the drafting of the Weimar constitution. The pamphlets include works on related subjects, such as the German revolution of 1918, the Workers' and Soldiers' Councils, constitutional history and federalism in Germany, territorial questions concerning Silesia and the Saar, and materials on German political parties, including minutes of meetings, leaflets and printed matter from the Deutsche Demokratische Partei (DDP). Some of the DDP material is particularly addressed to women. Also in the papers are essays and reviews by Holborn, teaching materials from his tenure at the Hochschule für Politik in Berlin and Yale University. There is only a small amount of correspondence, largely on professional matters. Important correspondents are Friedrich Meinecke and Alfred Vagts, who also contributed a memoir on Holborn.

Correspondence, minutes of meetings, essays, and printed matter chiefly related to Kimball's experiences as a member of the Yale College Class of 1858. Among the groups with which Kimball was associated are the Linonian Society, as its president, the Society of Inquiry, the Wooden Spoon, and the DeForest Prize Orations. Letters to his family after his graduation describe his experiences as a teacher in Massachusetts, Kentucky, and Chicago, Illinois. Letters from Kentucky in 1860 describe the consequence of his pro-Lincoln position. His major correspondent is Miriam Sherman, another teacher, writing from Chicago, Illinois.

Correspondence, notebooks, diplomas, and membership certificates largely relating to Newton's position as professor of mathematics at Yale University (1855-1896) and related Yale activities. In the correspondence is a letter from Noah Porter describing Thorstein B. Veblen and pleading for his admission as a candidate for the Ph.D. degree despite his "limited means." Also included in the papers is a notebook of mortality statistics of Yale graduates compiled in connection with Newton's publication: Length of life of the Yale graduates in the years [1707]-1762.

The papers consist of addresses, manuscripts, notes, printed material and articles of John Heyl Vincent and his son, George Edgar Vincent concerning Sunday-school classes, biblical history, sociology, education and public health.

Correspondence, printed matter, and memorabilia of Atherton Noyes (1862-1938) and his brother Edward Parish Noyes (1857-1913). Material concerns the undergraduate years of his brothers at Yale, classes of 1880 and 1885, Atherton Noyes' life in Colorado, and his trip to Europe in 1894-1895.

The records consist of two letters signed by Theodore Dwight Woolsey as president of Yale College.

Correspondence, writings, research notes, teaching materials, printed matter, a diary, a scrapbook, and photographs (1922-1952) comprise the papers. The teaching materials and the research notes reflect French's interest in Chaucer. A portion of the correspondence concerns Memorial Quadrangle at Yale, about which he published a book in 1929. There is also a substantial number of letters from students at Jonathan Edwards College, of which he was master from 1930 to 1953. Other correspondents are Robert Bates, John Philip Marchant and Emerson Tuttle.

The papers contain correspondence related to Roswell Parish's attendance at Yale College (Class of 1864), Civil War letters consisting of letters of introduction obtained by Parish in conveying his brother home from the Battle of Antietam and miscellaneous correspondence, autographs, and printed matter. Included in the letters is one from Maxfield Parrish on family genealogy. Among the signatures are those of E. E. Hale, Alvan G. Clark, John T. Morse, N. R. Huntington, Francis A. Walker, Edward H. Hall, Timothy Dwight and E. C. Williams. The Yale letters are chiefly from college officials about Parish's academic standing, but also included are five letters from Walter Camp concerning football.

Correspondence, reviews of books, financial records, photographs and memorabilia. The correspondence largely concerns his search for jobs and discussion of early English poetry and Chaucer. Among his correspondents are William Lyon Phelps and William Howard Taft. Included also are transcripts of nine letters from Henry Rose Hinckley, father of Henry B. Hinckley, to his parents written from Yale College. The earliest letter (February 1858) contains an account of a town and gown riot.

Correspondence, writings, records of astronomical expeditions, diaries, notebooks and scrapbooks of David Peck Todd, astronomer and teacher at Amherst College from 1881 to 1917. Between 1882 and 1914 Todd conducted nine expeditions to various parts of the world to study solar eclipses. The notes, photographs, drawings and memorabilia of these expeditions make up a significant portion of the papers. He was also a fertile inventor, and plans and drawings for many devices, some related to solving technical problems encountered on his expeditions are included in the papers.

The papers consist of correspondence, writings, notes and research materials, clippings, memorabilia, photographs and financial records of William Graham Sumner, a sociologist, professor at Yale University, and advocate of free trade and the gold standard. The correspondence (over 13,000 items) documents many of Sumner's interests including the Yale College curriculum and economic and political issues. It also includes substantive accounts from friends in the South about Reconstruction, the Freedmen's Bureau, and the Tilden-Hayes election. Family correspondence spans the years 1863-1908. There are over 100 letters written by Sumner during the last years of his life to Albert Galloway Keller.

Correspondence, research material, writings and biographical material collected by C.-E.A. Winslow for a biography of Sedgwick, published in 1924. The correspondence (1879-1921) is with students and colleagues on professional matters, and the fragmentary research material concerns bacteriological studies of milk. For additional Sedgwick correspondence, see the C.-E.A. Winslow papers, MS749. The writings include articles, lecture notes, reports and essays. Also in the papers is a lengthy tribute to Sedgwick by George C. Whipple. These papers form part of the Contemporary Medical Care and Health Policy Collection.

An artificial collection of notes, lectures, student papers, scrapbooks, and writings relating to the study and teaching of the academic disciplines in the social sciences including economics, education, psychology, political science, philosophy, and sociology, 1866-1967. The papers of Charles Andrews Armstrong Bennett, Albert Bushnell Hart, Wilmon Henry Sheldon, Wilbur Marshall Urban, and Alfred North Whitehead are included.

Correspondence, engineering notebooks, lectures, and manuscripts on engineering, poems, plays, newspaper clippings, and other printed matter. The correspondence is chiefly on engineering, but also contains three notes from Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. discussing science and religion. All of DuBois' poems and plays also deal with the topics of science and religion. Also included is his unpublished manuscript: Mechanics of Engineering.

The papers emphasize Moore's teaching, writing, and involvement with Columbia Law School, Yale Law School, and the Institute of Human Relations at Yale University from 1924 to 1943. The papers also contain materials relating to Dr. William O. Moore and the Abraham Underhill estate.

Correspondence, writings, and research files reflecting Kirby's interest in the history of engineering. Much of the material was gathered in connection with his book, Engineering in History, published in 1956. Important correspondents are Ludlow S. Bull, an Egyptologist, and his co-autors, Arthur B. Darling, Frederick G. Kilgour, and Sidney Withington.

Diary, diplomas, and miscellaneous papers, chiefly documenting Hervey D. Leland's periods of service as a teacher in Japan. The diary (1909) was written while he was teaching English in Iwakuni, Japan.

Miscellaneous letters by William Howard Taft, two speeches (one on strikes, the other on liberty under the law) and a colored pen and ink drawing by Sir Francis Carruthers Gould, entitled "Ex-President Taft in Retirement." Among the letters the most important was written to Colonel J.C. Hemphill from the White House, July 28, 1911 and discusses Senator Robert M. La Follette's attempt to introduce protectionist legislation on wool. In a number of letters in 1917 Taft writes to classmates of his Yale College class of 1878 to raise money for a special fund for their fortieth reunion. Also included are copies of notebooks of lectures and other teaching materials (1913-1916) kept while he was Kent Professor at the Yale Law School. A student essay, "The Third Term Question," circa 1874-1875 is included in the papers.

Fox's investments in Florida orange groves in the 1880s and a series of drafts of letters to various newspapers on Irish and English politics (1917-1925). The diary records his travels in England and Europe in 1921 and 1923.

Winslow, a prominent figure in the public health movement. Correspondence focuses on health and social welfare issues with several notable educators, doctors, and social policy advocates. Organization files include material relating to the United States Public Health Service and the American Public Health Association. Records of the Association's Committee on the Cost of Medical Care are also included, as are teaching files from Yale University, writings and lectures, reprints of articles, and family papers. Anne Rogers Winslow's photographic journals of her husband's American Red Cross mission to the Soviet Union in 1917 is an example of family material. These papers form part of the Contemporary Medical Care and Health Policy Collection.

Student notes on lectures in literature and the classics Perrin attended in Berlin (1876-1878), notes for lectures at Adelbert College and Yale University, corrected proofs for a volume of Plutarch's Lives, and miscellaneous personal papers, largely relating to Perrin's office as writer of the presentations for the honorary degrees at Yale University commencements (1902-1911). Included also is a small amount of correspondence about his publications and five volumes of diaries (1896-1913).

The papers are Cross's personal files and do not include administrative records from Yale or from the governor's office. The papers highlight Cross's research on the development of the English novel; public reaction to his books, public appearances, proclamations, and political campaigns; Cross's participation in numerous academic and civic organizations; and his autobiographical research and writing for Connecticut Yankee.
