One of the major figures in the papers is Edward Hooker (1822-1903), commander in the United States Navy. Two volumes document his command of the Potomac Flotilla (1863) and of the U.S.S. Commodore (1864-1865), both during the Civil War. Maps and charts collected by Edward Hooker relate to the Civil War and eight are connected with his command of the U.S.S. Idaho during its voyage around the world (1867-1868).

The papers consist of photostatic copies of John Davenport letters collected by Isabel M. Calder and published in her Letters of John Davenport, Puritan Divine (1937).

Correspondence, diaries, financial and legal papers, inventories, deeds, and accounts of members of the Pierpont family of North Haven, Connecticut. The principal figure is Daniel Pierpont, business man and town clerk of North Haven whose papers include an account book kept while building a house (1846), fourteen deeds for land in North Haven and a description of a churn invented by him. His diary (1824) contains an account of a murder trial in New Haven interrupted by the arrival of General Lafayette, and a description of a journey through southern New York state where he observed preparations for the reception of LaFayette. There is also an estate inventory for Hezekiah Pierpont (1792), financial papers of Rufus Pierpont and a resolution (Aug 1, 1855) of St. John's Church on his death.

The bulk of the collection relates to Edward Whiting Gilman (1823-1900), his family and his work as a clergyman and foreign secretary of the American Bible Society.

Material relating to the American Revolution and the colonial period includes the correspondence, legal papers, and financial records of Charles Chauncey (1747-1823). The legal papers of Charles Chauncey (1777-1849) document his work in Philadelphia. The European travel diaries for Nathaniel Chauncey (1824-1826) and Durham, Connecticut town records relating to Worthington Gallup Chauncey's municipal duties are also included in the papers.

The papers consist of correspondence, writings, photographs, research files, printed material, and miscellanea of George Dudley Seymour, a lawyer, antiquarian, historian, author and city planner in New Haven, Connecticut. Seymour's personal papers and collected manuscripts document the history of the Seymour family, the patriot Nathan Hale, the city planning movement in New Haven, Connecticut, and local history, 1684-1944. General correspondence files contain the bulk of personal correspondence, with many figures from the fields of art, education, politics, and sculpture represented, including William Howard Taft, a close friend of Seymour's. Family genealogy files include extensive correspondence, papers, and photographs Seymour accumulated in the course of his research on The Seymour Family (1939). Seymour also collected information and manuscripts relating to Nathan Hale, the Connecticut hero.

Correspondence, diaries, legal and financial records and memorabilia by and about the descendants of Lieutenant Thomas Leffingwell, one of the founders of Norwich, Connecticut. The major groups of papers are those of Christopher Leffingwell (1734-1810), a merchant in Norwich and William Leffingwell (1765-1834), a stockbroker in New York and later a resident of New Haven. These groups contain papers on legal, financial and business transactions. Family correspondence during the Revolutionary War describes civilian life and medical treatment of the period. National politics are discussed all through the nineteenth century. Also of interest are travel diaries kept by Caroline Augusta Foote in Savannah in 1834 and by Frederica Russell Street during a grand tour of Europe, 1843-1847.

Papers of several branches of the Peck family in Connecticut. Half of the collection is made up of the papers of the Ambrose Peck family (1691-1911) including correspondence, diaries, account books, legal papers, photographs, and memorabilia. Noteworthy are letters on the Battle of Bunker Hill and the War of 1812, as well as diaries by Abby Ann Hyde Peck from her school days, 1824-1832, and her old age, 1874-1883. Another member of the family represented is Tracy Peck (1785-1862) an important public figure in Bristol, Connecticut, and active in the Congregational Church. The papers of Epaphroditus Peck contain lecture notes taken while he was attending Yale Law School (1903-1908) and family correspondence. Miscellaneous papers (1812-1907) of other members of the family make up the remainder of the collection.

Correspondence and legal papers of Josiah Rogers who was a blacksmith, miller and farmer in Branford. The papers document his extensive land transactions, largely in Branford, but also involving property in Milford, Stratford, New London, Killingworth, New Haven and Waterbury. Signatories to the documents include Joseph Talcott, Gurdon Saltonstall, John Russell and Edward Barker.

Correspondence, financial records, and memorabilia of this Stamford, Connecticut family. The principal figure is David Waterbury (1722-1801), who served as a colonel in the French and Indian War and again in the American Revolution. Included in the papers are military records relating to these events and a letter to him from Roger Sherman (1776 Apr 30) about a Continental Commission. Also two travel journals kept by his son, William Waterbury IV, one for a trip throught New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Kentucky, Maryland and Delaware in 1799-1800 and another for a trip through New York State in 1812-1813.

The papers relate principally to Henry Ward Beecher (1813-1887), popular 19th century clergyman and orator, and members of his family. Among those represented are his father, the Reverend Lyman Beecher (1775-1863), clergyman; his brothers, Edward Beecher (1803-1895), educator and antislavery leader, and Thomas Kinnicut Beecher (1824-1900) and Charles Beecher (1815-1900), both clergyman and antislavery activist; and his sisters, Harriett Elizabeth (Beecher) Stowe (1811-1896), author, Catherine Esther Beecher (1800-1878), pioneer educator and writer on 'domestic economy,' and Isabella Homes (Beecher) Hooker (1822-1907), well-known suffragist. Also included are papers relating to the Scoville family (mainly Annie Beecher Scoville, 1866-1953, teacher and lecturer), as well as other related families. The papers cover an extremely wide range of cultural, political, social, and religious issues and topics of 19th and early 20th century America and include correspondence from a large number of well-known men and women. The papers were previously known as the Beecher-Scoville Family Papers.

The papers consist of family correspondence of the Whiting family as well as the personal correspondence of Nathan Whiting, military and legal documents and miscellaneous family papers, including an address by Polly Whiting on the importance of education for women (undated), an essay by Samuel Whiting on his marriage (pre-1725) and a plan of the Township of Cumberland showing land belonging to Colonel Nathan Whiting and others..

Chiefly deeds, estate papers and financial records of the Blackstone family of Branford, Connecticut. Included also are two farm account books for the years 1772-1839 and that of David Welles, Jr. for the years 1773-1786. Among the Branford papers is a Grand Jury presentment against two men for disloyal acts during the Revolution.

Correspondence (1806-1870), deeds (1707-1857) to property in Connecticut, and miscellaneous papers. The bulk of the correspondence is that of William Chauncey Fowler (1793-1881), an educator. Principal correspondents include George Sewall Boutwell, Lewis Cass, Salmon Portland Chase, Rufus Choate, Schuyler Colfax, Horace Mann, Gideon Algernon Mantell, and Truman Smith. Also in the papers is an account book (1854-1866) of Crampton and Fowler, manufacturers and farmers of Northford, Connecticut and a collection of autographs, including one of John Quincy Adams.

Chiefly legal papers of various members of the Bushnell family of Saybrook, Conn. relating to the purchase of land and other financial transactions. The compositions of Lydia O. Dibble, a cousin of Ida Bushnell, include an essay on the death of a friend (1848).

Correspondence, Pond and Norton family deeds, and financial papers of the Pond family of Connecticut together with records pertaining to the town of Wolcott. The papers also contain a partial autobiography of Peter Pond (1740-1807) describing his experiences in the French and Indian War and as a fur trader in the northwest.

Diaries of Jacob Eliot with marginal notes relating to people in Boston, Massachusetts, and Lebanon, Connecticut, 18th century preachers, books, sermons, a meeting of the General Association of Connecticut, the Great Awakening, and the Trumbull and Williams families. Includes papers of Ellsworth Eliot (1864-1945), physician, of New York City, with material he collected in writing books; letters from Fitz Greene Halleck, S. F. B. Morse, Robert Sherman, and Eli Whitney; and legal documents relating to Nathan and Sarah Camp.

The papers consist of account books, letterbooks, and papers of the Sanford family of New Haven, Connecticut. The merchant activities of Nelson D. Sanford and David P. Calhoun are detailed. Also included is a microfilm of Samuel Simons Sanford's album which documents his career as a professor of applied music, and his association with Yale.

Norton, who was living in Troy, New York and then in Georgia. The letters discuss slavery, religion, family finances, and also describe the death of a daughter of the family in 1839. Also mentioned in the papers are the Hooker, Cowles and Brownson families.

Correspondence, diaries, letterbooks, financial papers, writings, scrapbooks, and memorabilia of the Farnam family of New Haven, Connecticut, 1721-1929. The papers of Henry Farnam (1803-1883), and two of his sons, Henry Walcott Farnam (1853-1933) and William Whitman Farnam (1844-1929) form this collection. The papers of Henry Farnam include personal and professional correspondence concerning his family, life in New Haven, and the building of several canals and railroads in Connecticut and the Midwest. Materials documenting the New Haven and Northampton Company, Chicago and Rock Island Railroad, Mississippi and Missouri Valley Railroad, Northern Indiana Railroad, and Peoria and Bureau Valley Railroad is arranged here. The papers of Henry Walcott Farnam include personal and professional correspondence, financial papers, writings, subject files and scrapbooks relating to his family, life in New Haven, student and teaching experiences at Yale, membership in local, state, and national academic and reform organizations, and philanthropic activities on behalf of educational and charitable institutions. The papers of William Whitman Farnam include correspondence and topical files relating to family matters, Yale University, and New Haven Park Commission activities.

The papers consist of personal and professional correspondence, genealogical and professional research material and writings, and financial records of Elias Loomis and his sons Henry Bradford and Francis Engelsby Loomis. The papers record Elias Loomis' scientific studies, particularly in astronomy and meteorology. Genealogical notes and writings document the family history through the descendants of Joseph Loomis. Correspondence concerning Elias Loomis' father, sisters, and brothers, who were pioneer settlers of Alton, Illinois, details the family's interest in developments in American politics, education, travel, and social conditions from the 1830s through the 1870s.

The papers consist of autographs and collected letters, sermons, teaching materials, research notes and documents, and the typescript of Kenneth Cameron's master's thesis on Othello (1931). A large part of the papers relates to the Church of the Holy Trinity in Hartford, Connecticut and contains a substantial collection of the sermons, writings and speeches of the Reverend Ernest Fremery Miel, manuscripts of Sir Arthur Gorges, sermons of Joseph G. H. Barry and papers relating to the construction of the church, 1870-1874. Also in the papers are a number of Civil War documents, including papers of P. P. Pitkin and letters to the U. S. Treasury from officers of the U. S. Colored Regiments. Another group of letters, written between 1885 and 1917, to Samuel Hart, concerns the American Book of Common Prayer. Also included are research materials on the Concord School of Philosophy and Literature.

Several generations of family members are represented in the papers including: Joseph Wright Alsop (1772-1844), Joseph Wright Alsop (1804-1878), Joseph Wright Alsop (1838-1891), Joseph Wright Alsop (1876-1953), Mary Alsop Oliver Alsop (1815-1893), Richard Alsop (1726-1776), Richard Alsop (1789-1842), Charles Richard Alsop (1802-1865), and John De Koven Alsop (1879-1926). Family mercantile interests in Connecticut and related operations in Bolivia, Chile, and Peru are documented. Files relating to a legal case involving the firm of Alsop & Company, the United States government, and the governments of Bolivia and Chile (1865-1914) are included. The personal papers of several family members are also arranged in the papers.

The Albert Mathewson Papers consist of correspondence, financial, business and legal records and genealogical material of the Lanman, Trumbull and Huntington families, ancestors of Mathewson. His own personal papers (1888-1941) are largely related to his professional activities, with the Connecticut State Shellfish Commission, among others.

Diary, account book, financial and legal papers, and photocopies of material relating to the Towner and Tyler families of Branford, Connecticut. Solomon and Isaac Tyler's shipping interests and John Edwin Towner's Civil War diary are significant materials in the collection.

Chiefly correspondence of the Wadsworth, Silliman, and Trumbull families. Of note in the eighteenth century correspondence is the exchange between Joseph Trumbull and Jeremiah Wadsworth concerning the business of the Commissary General during the American Revolution. Major correspondents in the later period are Faith Trumbull Wadsworth, Benjamin and Harriet Trumbull Silliman and their children. There is a long series of ninety-one letters (1806-1846) to Eliza Winthrop Sebor from Faith Trumbull Wadsworth and also a diary kept by her between 1803 and 1846. Another by John Noyes Wadsworth from 1790 to 1815 is largely made up of his financial accounts from Durham, Conn. and Genesee, New York. This volume was continued (1815-1835) by John's son, Wedworth. Also in the papers are miscellaneous legal and financial papers, clippings and memorabilia.

The collection consists of correspondence, poems, estate papers, notebooks, account books, logbooks, legal books, and miscellaneous papers of the Lay, Parker, Pratt, Shaler, Smith, Stark, Tyler, and Williams families of eastern Connecticut.

The papers consist of correspondence, pamphlets, printed material, scrapbooks, sermons, and other papers relating to members of the Carrington family. Henry Beebee Carrington (1824-1912) and his grandfather, David Lewis Beebe (1763-1803), are two central figures in the papers. Material relating to David Lewis Beebe, including essays and sermons, documents his religious duties in Connecticut and family concerns in Ohio. Henry Beebee Carrington material includes correspondence, a diary, a letterbook, maps, pamphlets, scrapbooks, and other items documenting his experiences as a student at Yale University, as a lawyer practicing in Ohio, and as a commanding officer for Union forces during the Civil War. Carrington's role in military campaigns and treaty negotiations with Indians of the American West is also documented. His design of Fort Philip Kearney, the site of a famous massacre, and treaty negotiations with the Flathead Indians of Montana are detailed in pamphlets, scrapbooks and other papers.

The papers consist of correspondence, legal and financial records, and writings which document the artistic career, business ventures, and personal life of John Trumbull. The papers also include correspondence, diaries, and financial and legal records of other Trumbull family members and of related Huntington, Lanman, Silliman, and Wadsworth family members. Files of Theodore Sizer containing his research material and writings on John Trumbull are also in the papers.

Correspondence and other papers of several members of the Sergeant family of Massachusetts and Connecticut. Major correspondents include George Sergeant (1822-), of Northampton, Massachusetts; his sister, Catharine Sedgwick Sergeant De Forest, married to Dr. Henry A. De Forest; and his daughter, Catharine De Forest Sergeant (1848-). The collection contains correspondence on female education in Syria and education of women in the United States. Later letters, mainly in the 1870s, describe the experiences of women as students and as teachers in Princeton, New Jersey, Chicago, West Haven, Connecticut and elsewhere. Also includes family photographs and daguerreotypes.

Correspondence, legal and financial papers, a diary and miscellaneous items of the Bronson family of Washington, Connecticut. The largest part of the papers are those of Moseley Virgil Bronson (1806-1890), documenting his career as an officer of the Connecticut militia and as a teacher in New York and Connecticut. Of particular interest are the letters of Edna Moseley Todd, who moved to Virginia in 1821, and whose letters to various members of the family describe her life as a mother and school teacher, as well as offering comments on slavery and abolitionism. Also in the papers is the diary of Maria N. Fowler Ford, recording her experience as a physician's wife in Hawaii (1854-1858) and in New York and Connecticut (1858-1861). There are also miscellaneous papers of the Hollister family.

The principal figures in these papers are Peter Verstille of Wethersfield and Hartford, Connecticut, his wife Naomi Ridgway Verstille, their children and grandchildren. Most of the papers consist of correspondence, but also included are financial and legal papers, among them accounts of the estate of Peter Verstille and lists of house furnishings. The largest part of the correspondence is the exchange of letters between Nancy and Charlotte Verstille, grandaughters of Peter Verstille. Both were teachers and discuss their experiences at schools in various parts of New England and the South. The letters of Nancy Verstille also include an account of an operation performed in 1817. The Dabney family of Massachusetts were major correspondents and their letters contain a description of the bankruptcy of the family in 1818.

The papers include correspondence, sermons, and legal and financial papers of Alfred, Ebenezeer, Henry (1741-1830), Henry (1758-1843), Horace, Naphtali, and William Daggett. Naphtali Daggett was president of Yale College from 1766 to 1777. Deeds (quit claims) of William Daggett form the bulk of the collection.

The papers represent four generations of the Nehemiah Waterman family of Norwich, Connecticut. The principal figures are Elijah Waterman and his son Thomas Tileston Waterman, both Congregational ministers. The papers of Elijah Waterman consist of correspondence with other ministers, approximately 125 sermons, and histories of Woodstock, Pomfret, Lebanon and Hampton, Connecticut. The papers of Thomas Tileston Waterman also contain professional correspondence, sermons and religious publications. His wife, Delia Storrs Waterman's journals for the years ca.1848-1880, as well as essays, poetry and financial papers are included. There is also a series a scrapbooks kept by their son, Thomas Storrs Waterman with clippings and notes on politics, religion and history. General family correspondence, chiefly for the period 1795-1876, genealogical papers, photographs, financial documents, printed matter and memorabilia complete the collection.

Sermons of Peter Starr, together with the sermons of his predecessor in Kent (now Warren), Connecticut, Sylvanus Osborn, and of two relatives by marriage, John Keep and John Stevens. Three-fourths of the papers are by Peter Starr. During the Revolutionary War Starr shifted his loyalty, and the sermons provide biblical justification on both sides. John Keep was a chaplain during the war and a number of his camp sermons are in the collection.

Peyton R. Gilbert is the central figure in these family papers which begin with his father Samuel Gilbert, a judge in Tolland County, Connecticut. The family was based in Gilead and Hebron, Connecticut. The largest part of the papers contains legal and financial papers from the law practices of both Peyton R. and Samuel Gilbert. Also included is family correspondence, with a number of Civil War letters from David J. Gilbert as well as letters from members of the family in the West. Also in the papers are the diaries (1878-1884) of Ralph P. Gilbert and the papers of the Gilead Ecclesiastical Society, including letters from Albert W. and Nellie P. Clark who were living as missionaries in Bohemia in 1872.

Correspondence, diaries, and financial and legal papers of three generations of the Selden Huntington family of Old Lyme and Middlesex County, Connecticut. The papers document Selden Huntington's business fortunes in East Coast shipping and land speculation in Maine, his relationship with his son Joseph Selden, breaking up of his marriage to his second wife Jeanette Stewart, and social and religious activities in the community. Joseph Selden Huntington's letters record his years at school in Kents Hill, Maine, his attempts to establish himself in business in New York City and Springfield, Massachusetts, and his travels in the South. Also included in the papers are Joseph Selden Huntington's diary, notebook, scrapbook, and love letters from his freshman to his junior year at Yale College.

Correspondence and financial papers of Shadrach Osborn, a general merchant of Southbury, Connecticut, who was also active as a commissary during the Revolutionary War. Also included are the records of his business associate, Truman Hinman and his son, Erastus Osborn, who was sheriff of New Haven County. An account book for purchases from wholesale suppliers covers the period 1783-1792. The three letters in the papers are from Erastus Osborn. One dated 1812 describes a town-gown riot in New Haven, Connecticut and two written to his father in January 1824 report the discovery of a body stolen by Yale medical students from the West Haven, Connecticut burying ground.

Correspondence, financial records, diaries, scrapbooks, account books and memorabilia of the Bristol family of New Haven and New London, Connecticut. The major figures in the collection are the descendants of Simeon Bristol (1739-1805); his son, William Bristol, and his grandsons, William Brooks Bristol, and Louis Bristol, all prominent lawyers, judges and members of the state legislature in Connecticut.Nearly a third of the papers is made up of land deeds for New Haven and New London counties (1765-1854). The voluminous correspondence (2,569 letters) extends over several generations from 1798 to 1879. Of particular interest are the fifty-one letters by Louis Bristol written from Paris to family members and to Timothy Dwight Edwards describing the Revolution of 1830. Between 1829 and 1857 William Brooks Bristol wrote 581 letters to his brother Louis, chiefly on the question of buying and selling railroad stocks. Additional papers of the brothers include records of their law practice, account books and business corrspondence. Also a diary (1834-1844) kept by Louis Bristol recording his life as a student at Yale College, his surveying experience and his courtship, together with twenty-nine compositions written while at Yale. Eugene Stuart Bristol, son of William Brooks Bristol, is represented by letter books and extensive financial records (1869-1873) documenting his mining operations at Bingham Canyon, Utah.

Correspondence, diaries, account books, daybooks, legal papers, deeds, and land books of the Boardman family of New Haven and New Milford, Conn., which had extensive real estate holdings in Connecticut and the Western Reserve. Family members include William Whiting Boardman, (1794-1871) lawyer and probate judge of New Haven, Conn.; his father Elijah Boardman, (1760-1823) U.S. Senator from Connecticut who had holdings in the Connecticut Land Company and the three Ohio townships of Palmyra, Boardman, and Medina; his brother, George Sherman Boardman, (1799-1825) and his son, William Jarvis Boardman, (b.1832) attorney for the Valley Railroad Company, and holder of real estate in Cleveland, Ohio, New Haven, Conn., and Chattanooga, Tenn.

Records of the Fabrique family on their emigration from Languedoc, France to Newtown, Conn. Included are account books, diaries, military records, genealogies and architectural plans for meeting houses at Southbury, Roxbury and Oxford, Conn. Also the papers of Charles Fabrique (1817-1889) containing his correspondence while at Yale College, diaries and account books.

Correspondence, diaries, writings, and memorabilia document the Yale academic careers of Sterling Haight and Frank Scott Bunnell and John W. Sterling, the Civil War service of Rufus W. Bunnell and Henry T. Plant, and the travels of family members to destinations including the Southern and Western United States, Europe, and Hawaii. Several generations of family members are represented in the papers, including Eli Whitney, Eli Whitney Blake (1795-1886), Eli Whitney Blake (1836-1895), Henry Taylor Blake (1828-1922), and William Phipps Blake (1826-). Additional family members represented in the papers include: Charles Thompson Blake, Edward Foster Blake, James Pierrepont Blake, Dotha Bushnell, George Bushnell, George Ensign Bushnell, Mary Elizabeth Bushnell, and members of the Hazard, MacWhorter, Osborne, and Rice families.

Account books and autograph albums kept by various members of the Makepeace family of Connecticut. One, kept by Orlando Porter, relates to the clock manufacturing company of Samuel Harrison and Company. Another, kept by Ward Peck betweeen 1818 and 1842, records his farming activities in Waterbury. The four autograph albums (1827-1885) contain the signatures of such notables as John Burroughs, Leonard Bacon, Timothy Dwight, James A. Garfield, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Wendell Phillips, Henry Ward Beecher, Catherine Beecher, and Horace Greeley. Also in the collection is an account book kept successively by two members of the Burtch family of Stonington, Connecticut. The first part (1773-1787) was kept by Thomas Burtch, a cooper and the second by his grandson, also Thomas Burtch, a day laborer. Their accounts deal largely with work on ships. Diplomas and certificates of Walter D. Makepeace and genealogical material make up the remainder of the collection.

Schoolmaster, postmaster and town clerk in Newtown, Connecticut. The papers relate to Baldwin's various occupations and consist largely of account books, legal documents and miscellaneous items recording, among others, the cost of education, charges for lots in the Burying Ground and aid to the poor. Of particular interest are two documents concerning slaves and one concerning an illegitimate child.

This artificial collection is composed of correspondence, journals, account books, manuscripts, scrapbooks, and printed material relating to the study and practice of medicine, primarily in Connecticut and New York, primarily in the nineteenth century.

The papers also document his personal life, including his marriage to Anne Morrow Lindbergh, the loss of his son, and his interest in his family history. Forty-four manuscript sermons of Matthew Noyes, Yale 1785, who preached in various Connecticut churches.

The principal figures in the papers are Captain Thomas Bartram, a shipmaster of Black Rock, Connecticut, and his two sons, Joseph and Thomas Burr Bartram. The papers consist chiefly of records connected with the operation of their schooner, Live Oak (1823-1851) and financial and legal papers relating to land transactions in Fairfield, Connecticut (1800-1846). Also included are a small amount of family correspondence, genealogical materials, financial records of the First Congregational Society of Black Rock, earning and expense records of the Danbury and Norwalk Railroads, and accounts for a farm in Black Rock (1836-1885).

Correspondence, journals, and legal and financial papers of the Hillard family of Preston, Connecticut. Moses Hillard, 1780-1837, a sailor, ship's captain, farmer, and tax collector, and his son, Elias Brewster Hillard, 1825-1895, a minister, are represented in the papers.

The papers consist of real estate and legal papers from Bridgeport, West Haven, Orange, Woodbridge, and Fairfield, Connecticut. Deeds and papers from the Burritt-Sherman family, the Smith family, and Walter A. Main are included.

Contents of two scrapbooks kept by Punderson containing samples of his drawings and engravings, photographs, trade and calling cards, and a large collection of engravings by others as well as newspaper and magazine clippings, chiefly portraits of notable persons. A large part of Punderson's work includes engravings of members of the Yale College faculty, views of the college building, seals of various societies, and views of Connecticut.

Chiefly financial and legal records, including inventories and prices for shipments of merchandise, on the sloop Clarissa, sailing out of Naugatuck and Guilford under Captain Isaac Meigs. Also papers for other business transactions carried on by Samuel C. Johnson.

Principal figure in the papers is Zalman Wildman, lawyer and congressman who, with his brother, Seymour, were proprietors of Z. & S. Wildman, Hat Manufacturers, and the first manufacturers from Danbury to establish outlets in the South for Danbury hats. The papers consist almost entirely of business records including correspondence, financial and legal papers, and a receipt book. This latter volume (1803-1821) records the commodities shipped from Danbury by the firm to its Charleston, South Carolina store. Included also is a single family letter (1847) from Lucy S. Wildman to her brother, Horatio.

Diaries, a farm ledger, poems, hymns and correspondence. The diary entries cover the years 1828-1853 and are interspersed with copies of Gilyard family letters from England (1808-1818) together with fifty-five pages of recipes for dyes. Many of the diary entries concern the Methodist Church of which Gilyard was a trustee for some thirty years. The farm ledger (1835-1845) records farm activities and the sale of farm produce.

The papers consist of correspondence, a diary, household accounts, and professional documents relating to William Terry; his wife, Maria Roxana Slocomb Terry; his sister, Esther Asenath Terry; and their family and friends in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and Minnesota.

Chiefly the letters of William Cowper Wood to his parents written from Washington, D.C. and Joliet, Illinois. Also included is a ledger (1809-1837) kept by his father, Joseph Wood, a judge in New Haven, Connecticut, miscellaneous family letters, and genealogical materials.

The principal figure in these papers is Addin Lewis, who was the first Collector of the District of Mobile and later mayor of the city. The outgoing correspondence is made up of his official letters as Collector and contain several on the smuggling of slaves. The incoming correspondence contains both business and family letters. Notable correspondents include David Daggett and Jeremiah Day. Also included are financial and legal papers concerning Addin Lewis's real estate transactions in Mobile as well as papers kept by the executors of his estate. Other items in the collection are an autograph album of 1823-1826 belonging to Hannah Maria Lewis Bishop and an inventory of the estates of Isaac Chauncey and Harriet Pomeroy Lewis of Meriden, Connecticut.

The papers consist of correspondence, diaries, journals, manuscripts, notebooks, sermons, writings, two books with manuscript notes, legal and financial records, photographs, printed material and miscellanea documenting the personal lives and professional careers of four generations of the Bingham family. The papers include material documenting Hiram Bingham (1789-1869) and his missionary work in Hawaii; Hiram Bingham (1831-1908) and his missionary work in the Gilbert Islands, his literary efforts, and family matters; and Hiram Bingham (1875-1956) and his academic career, his South American explorations, including the discovery of the ruins of Machu Picchu in 1911, and his political career as lieutenant governor, governor, and United States senator from Connecticut. Papers relating to several other family members are also included in the papers.

The papers also contain records of several textile and mining companies and those of Connecticut Canal Railroad and other companies. Also included are 161 loose papers: 13 of these were removed from the account books; the remaining 148, Sept. 1854-Sept. 1857, are mainly authorizations by various doctors for sale by Pierpont's Store of liquor for medicinal uses.

The papers consist of eleven volumes of a journal kept by Wright from his first years at Yale College in 1828. While there he reports on a lecture by Elias Boudinot on behalf of the Cherokee nation and various temperance and abolition activities. The journals are chiefly devoted to religious meditations and describe the various revival movements of his era and his evangelical work with black residents of New Haven. He also records various aspects of his personal life including five mental breakdowns between 1828 and 1853, his family's health, and gives an account of the birth of his fourth child. The journals also include transcriptions of his sermons as well as those by others. With the papers is a letter from James Heyden Wright to Marion Wright Messimer on the journal.

Notebooks, financial records, and miscellanea of Amos L. Williams, a physician in Brookfield, Connecticut. Includes notes on lectures of Eli Ives, William Tully, and others.

Correspondence, diaries, notebooks, lectures, articles, essays, genealogical materials, photographs and other papers of William Henry Brewer, scientist, teacher, and writer.The collection spans Brewer's entire career including his student days at the Yale Analytical Laboratory, his work with the California State Geological Survey, his various teaching positions in California, New York and at Yale and all his other many and varied activities. Of special and specific interest are Brewer's letters to members of his family which chronicle his many trips and scientific expeditions, his correspondence with his colleagues, and the methodical and voluminous notes and diaries he kept on virtually everything he did or encountered.

The papers consist of letters written to Packer from fellow teachers, family, and business associates, plus financial, legal, and miscellaneous papers. The correspondence covers the years 1851-1858, when Packer was teaching school in West Mystic, Connecticut; Brandon, Mississippi; and Mystic Bridge, Connecticut. The letters contain news about teaching, discussions of spiritual and intellectual concerns, and remarks about places visited.

The family correspondence contains a long series of letters (1890-1894) from Marion Isabel Watrous before her marriage to Angell in 1894. Prominent among his professional correspondents are Charles Bakewell, John Dewey, William James, A.H. Pierce and George Dudley Seymour. Also included are papers relating to Angell's inauguration as president of Yale University and his term of office. Additional papers include minutes and reports of the Rockefeller Foundation and of the General Education Board (also endowed by Rockefeller funds) on both of which James R. Angell served as member and trustee. The minutes and reports of the General Education Board document its support for various programs to reorganize general education in the United States and to improve education for women, blacks and children. The minutes of the Rockefeller Foundation detail its support for research projects in the natural sciences and the humanities.

Essentially a collection of over 200 letters written between 1837 and 1852 by Ethan Allen Andrews and his wife, Lucy Cowles Andrews, to their son, Horace. Ethan Allen Andrews (1787-1858) was an educatior who wrote a successful series of Latin textbooks, was active in Connecticut politics and public affairs, and also managed a farm in New Britain. The letters begin upon Horace's entrance to Yale College and in addition to parental advice contain progress reports from Ethan Allen Andrews on his scholarly activity and accounts of his publishing negotiations. Also in the papers are miscellaneous items relating to his interest in education and the classics, family photographs and a reminiscence by Ethan Allen Andrews II about and photographs of York Square, now the site of Payne Whitney Gymnasium.

The papers consist of diaries, lectures, and writings on various aspects of European culture, and a notebook on "Medieval Asia" kept by Morris Franklin Tyler's son, Leonard S. Tyler. The diaries (1875-1907) are largely devoted to family life in New Haven and Woodbridge, Connecticut, but also comment on current political issues, particularly the presidential elections of 1876 and 1884. Also in the papers are letters from John James Audubon to Andrew Bigelow, and from William A. Buckingham to Daniel Tyler.

The papers consist of a typed transcript of a diary kept by Hannah Maria Catlin Phelps between 1849 and 1859. She was the daughter of Julius Catlin, lieutenant governor of Connecticut, 1858-1861. It depicts the social life of a young woman in Hartford, Connecticut, and her visits to New York, Washington, D.C., and Niagara Falls. The last two years of the diary include accounts of her wedding and the birth of her daughter in October, 1858.

Mainly family correspondence between William H. Bennett, his wife, and father containing news of Hampton, Conn., student life at Yale College (ca. 1860s), and family news from the Bennetts in the Mid-West. There are also photographs and essays on the New York Produce Exchange, as well as photographs of tea cultivation in India and China and of a survey party at the Nicaragua canal.

The records consist of abstracts of title, atlases, maps, indices, index card locator files, probate extracts, and ownership files from the Clark, Hall, and Peck and White Brothers, and its predecessors, the most active New Haven law firms in real property law between the 1860s and 1982.

The papers consist of nine volumes, six of which contain records of claims for pensions made by Civil War veterans from Connecticut. The remaining volumes contain accounts related to John Graves Chapman's insurance business, a letterbook (ca. 1866-1879), and a collection of mounted postmarks.

The geographic range of the reports is global, but is focused mainly on Southeastern Connecticut and New Haven, though many smaller towns and cities in Connecticut are also represented. More general reports about the New York region and other states, socioeconomic data about the United States, and scattered documentation about urban planning in other countries are also part of this collection.

Correspondence, speeches, writings, scrapbooks, printed matter, clippings and memorabilia of Charles Parsons, bibliophile and conservative polemicist and ideologist. Also included are some papers of Parsons' wife, Mary Elizabeth Curry Parsons, and speeches and writings of friends and associates of Parsons. Most of the papers are related to Parsons' advocacy and support of various conservative and anti-communist causes and issues, with the bulk of the material covering the period 1934-1965. Important correspondents include Lawrence Dennis, Gerald L. K. Smith, Dan Smoot, Harry Elmer Barnes, William F. Buckley, Jr., Booth Tarkington, Robert Welch, Hamilton Fish, Martin Dies, Joseph McCarthy, Richard Nixon, Robert A. Taft, and Harold Velde. Also included is correspondence with many other members of Congress.

The papers consist of correspondence, diaries, manuscripts, photographs, and newspaper clippings, which document Austin Hawes's student life, his career as state forester of Connecticut, his controversial retirement from that position, and his travels in Central and South America. Also included are papers concerning his European travels, his job as state forester of Vermont, and as professor of history at the University of Vermont. Correspondents include Henry Graves and Gifford Pinchot.

Chiefly account books kept by Addie W. Hale, wife of Charles Reverdy Hale, of Meriden, Connecticut recording her household expenses. Also in the accounts is her income from mending and from giving music and arithmetic lessons, together with notes on her allocation of time and on her arithmetic assignments. Her husband is frequently mentioned in the accounts as is a sister-in-law, Ida Hale Whitlock. An account book kept by Bryant Burwell Glenny, Jr. and a diary by L. S. Stocking are also in the papers.

The papers consist of correspondence, business records, maps and records of various forest conservation organizations in Connecticut and North Carolina, where James Goodwin carried on his lumbering operations. His activities in the conservation associations and as field secretary of the Connecticut State Park Forest Commission is documented in correspondence, reports, minutes of meetings and records of plantings carried on by the organizations. The maps show Goodwin's holdings in various parts of Connecticut and Carthage, North Carolina.

The papers are made up almost entirely of diaries and account books that record Bannihr's business career, both as the owner of a trimming business in New York, and as an engraver and die sinker. Bannihr's early diaries (1883-1891) describe his life as a young working man in Cheshire, Connecticut, where he was active in Democratic politics and the district school committee. Included in the diaries are descriptions of his mechanical inventions. His wife also kept a diary for a portion of this period (1890-1893), which takes in the years of their courtship and early married life. Samples of Bannihr's work in the form of plaster casts, master molds, and metal dies are also in the collection.

The papers consist of philosophical writings, lecture notes, and teaching materials documenting Charles Bakewell's career as professor of philosophy at Yale University. His role as a political and civic leader in Connecticut, and his continuing relationship with New Haven's Italian community, can also be traced in political addresses, and in miscellaneous notes. Also included are documents, research materials, and sixteen volumes of photographs depicting the work of the American Red Cross in Italy during World War I, supporting his 1920 publication The Story of the American Red Cross in Italy.

The two principal figures in these papers are David French Pierce, a Congregational minister of Southbury, Conn. and his daughter, Anna Harriet Pierce. Included are manuscripts by David F. Pierce, recounting his visions. The papers of Anna H. Pierce, who was an artist, contain her reminiscences as an art student as well as programs of exhibitions and photographs of her paintings. Also included are memoirs of another daughter, Mary Elizabeth, of her life on a New England farm together with family photographs and other papers.
