The New Haven women's liberation activist group with 858 plaintiffs' on March 2, 1971 filed a lawsuit against the state of Connecticut challenging the anti-abortion law. The case was heard by a three-judge District Court panel. On April 18, 1972 the court ruled 2-1 that Connecticut's anti-abortion law was unconstitutional. Governor Thomas J. Meskill in May 1972 by proclamation called the Connecticut General Assembly into special session to pass a new law against legal abortions. The three-judge panel on April 26, 1973 ruled 2-1 the new law was unconstitutional. The Connecticut General Assembly's Regulations Review Committee did not vote for or against Department of Health regulations governing legal abortions. In taking no action the regulations took effect by default on February 25, 1974.

The club was formed on November 27, 1879, composed of any soldier or sailor honorably discharged and sponsored by a member, and seems to have limited itself to Civil War veterans. Annual dinner meetings were held, usually in Hartford. It disbanded in 1936.

The Club was organized prior to 1909 with the purpose "to associate those actively or otherwise interested in the various branches of the arts and crafts for mutual benefit; to foster and promote interest in the handicrafts. . . and to encourage and stimulate. . . wider participation in and appreciation of good craftwork in all its branches."

Benjamin Warren Levalley was a 2nd Lieutenant in Company H of the 22nd Regiment Connecticut Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. In 1895-1896 he spent time with his cousin Joanna Remington recording gravestones of the Fenner family at the Remington farm in Rhode Island. The collection includes appointment letters, discharge from service paper, correspondence, and a printout of photographs.

In 1981, the General Assembly created this bipartisan commission to "conduct a study and undertake an analysis of state tax revenue, state tax laws, administration of state tax laws, and state fiscal policy in relation to tax revenue."

The Connecticut Board of Examiners of Embalmers was established in 1903. Its function is to examine and license embalmers and to make and enforce regulations for the practice of that profession. In 1941 the act was amended to include provisions for licensing funeral directors. Now known as the Connecticut Board of Examiners of Embalmers and Funeral Directors, the Board works closely with the Department of Public Health.

In 1895 the Fish Commissioners became the Commissioners of Fisheries and Game charged with "the supervision of hatcheries and retaining ponds, the introduction and distribution of such food fish and game as are adapted to the waters or lands of this State, and the enforcement of all laws relating to fish and game." The Commission became the State Board of Fisheries and Game in 1913.

The Board of Pardons had jurisdiction over the granting of and authority to grant, commutations of punishment or releases, conditional or absolute, commutations from the penalty of death, and pardons, conditional or absolute.

The Board of Parole made release decisions based upon the likelihood that released prisoners would remain at liberty without violating the terms and conditions of their parole agreement and supervised those who are granted parole.

The Board of Railroad Commissioners came into existence on July 1, 1853. On September 9, 1911 it was succeeded by the Public Utilities Commission.

This record group includes materials deposited at various times by persons who served as Connecticut's agents on the bi-state commissions which established and maintained the boundary lines between Connecticut and her neighbor states.

The letters and sermons consist of materials pertaining to Nathaniel Bouton, John Benedict Bouton, Harriet A. Bouton, and other Bouton family members. Nathaniel Bouton was pastor of the First Congregational Church in Concord, New Hampshire; a historian; and a member of numerous organizations. John Benedict Bouton was a hatter and volunteer soldier in Company H of the 8th Regiment Connecticut Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. Included in the letters and sermons are correspondence, sermons, a diary entry, and photographs.

The Civil Service Commission made rules, created classified job titles and tests, administered the tests and perepared eligibility lists, answered correspondence, and sought information about exempted or unclassified employees in State departments.

In 1959, the General Assembly created the Civil War Centennial Commission to promote and publicize the history of Connecticut's participation in the Civil War. The Commission consisted of twenty-five appointed members and had an office in the State Library.

The club was organized at a "mass meeting and rally of college women," in Hartford on February 11, 1905, with its object "mainly social, philanthropic, or literary." Among its activities, the Club took a leading role in the establishment of the Spruce Street Settlement, later known as Mitchell House.

The Commerce Committee has cognizance of all matters relating to the Department of Economic and Community Development, the Connecticut Development Authority and Connecticut Innovations, Incorporated. Consists of meeting documents including notices, agendas, minutes, attendance, and roll calls; bill books, and correspondence.

The Commissioners of Steamship Terminals were empowered, in addition to general liaison assistance in the promotion of water transportation and port development throughout the state, specifically to acquire, own, construct, maintain and operate docks, piers, terminals, equipment, warehouses, etc. "or any other appropriate harbor facilities" in New London, Waterford, Groton, Stonington, Ledyard, Preston, Montville and Norwich.

The Jamestown Tercentennial Exposition was held in Hampton Roads, Virginia, April 29 to November 30, 1907, to celebrate the three hundredth anniversary of the first English-speaking colony.

The Commission was appointed under a 1903 special act to plan and direct Connecticut's participation in the Exposition in St. Louis.

Established in 1949 and abolished in 1975, the Commission on Forfeited Rights was charged with the responsibility of reviewing and acting upon petitions to restore forfeited electoral rights for those who had been released from prison.

The Commission was established by Special Act 81-72 to address the ongoing concerns of cities and towns regarding state mandated programs and regulations. The legislature charged the Commission with identifying and cataloguing existing state mandates as well as studying the fiscal impact on local governments. The Interim Study Committee on State Mandates was established by Public Act 83-12. The records consist of memorandums, correspondence, notices of meetings, meeting minutes of both the full Commission and the subcommittees, reports, surveys, hearing transcripts, lists of mandates, lists of Commission members, text of legislation, notes, fiscal notes and impact statements, newspaper clippings, consultants reports, and research reference materials.

The Commission used nineteen survey units to study various aspects of state government and make organizational recommendations.

The Commission was responsible for encouraging "participation in, and promotion, development, acceptance and appreciation of" the cultural resources of the state. Its work fell generally into five categories: Programs, Program Development, Information Services, Technical Assistance and Grants. The seven main areas of work are in: Community Development, Dance, Education, Literature, Music, Theatre and Visual Arts.

The Commission made recommendations and proposed legislation to streamline State government that at the time consisted of 160 agencies among the three branches.

In 1939, the General Assembly enacted House Bill 1650 that established a five-member commission appointed by the Governor to study the problems associated with physical and mental diseases in Connecticut, delivery of services by state facilities and expenditures made by them and those that the state should make. Originally called the Commission on the Treatment and Care of People Afflicted with Physical or Mental Disabilities and sometimes known as the Barker Commission, the group was better known as the Commission on the Prevention and Care of Sickness.

The Commission studied ways to reorganize state government into fewer cabinet level agencies and emphasized implementation rather than investigation.

The Commission was created in 1919 "to investigate and report on a civil administration code." It collected data on state government organization and expenditures, took testimony from government officials and others, held public hearings between April and May 1920, and drafted its final report.

The Commission studied the reorganization and consolidation of boards and commissions and revision of the public health laws.

The Commission was established by the General Assembly in 1903 to make repairs to the State Capitol and to "investigate and ascertain the necessity of erecting an additional building."

The 1973 session of the Connecticut General Assembly created this Commission to draft legislation to be presented to the 1974 session of the General Assembly.

The Commission studied the State's judicial system with regards to methods of appointment of judges and their tenure in office and salaries.

The Commission conducted a comprehensive study of state government and made cost cutting and revenue enhancement recommendations for agencies.

Governor John Dempsey appointed a nine-member committee in December 1963 to recommend action to improve library services to the state of Connecticut.

The Committee studied the overall functions of state government and its agencies as well as their relationships with commissions and committees.

The Company K Veterans Corps of Hartford was founded in 1879 "to promote the interests and welfare of the active Company and preserve and continue the recollection of the service in the National Guard." All past members of Company K, First Regiment Infantry, Connecticut National Guard who had received an honorable discharge were eligible for election into this corps.

The 375 Commission was established by Executive Order 37 signed by Governor M. Jodi Rell on January 20, 2010. The Commission raised funds and developed events and festivities during the year long anniversary.

The Connecticut Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission was created to commemorate the bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln's birth by encouraging educational, historical and other organizations to develop Lincoln-related programs and events throughout the state from 2008 to February 12, 2010.

In 1943, the General Assembly created the first state race relations board in the nation, known as the Interracial Commission. Over the years, the agency's name has changed, and today it is called the Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities. CHRO seeks to eliminate discrimination based on race, sexual preference, gender, age, or religion in Connecticut by enforcing statutes, monitoring state agencies' affirmative action plans and reports, and engaging in advocacy and public education. The Connecticut Council of Churches and Religious Education was formed "to promote and extend the Christian religion in Connecticut by furnishing an interdenominational agency for cooperation in Christian education, comity, and social relations".
