Barry Moser had already established a reputation for himself as the premier American engraver of woodcuts in the 20th century before he turned to working primarily on designing and illustrating children's books. Moser has worked on over 200 books. He is the winner of an American Book Award. Barry Moser takes an active role in the design of any book that he illustrates, often contributing to type choice, layout, and cover design.

Born in Yonkers in 1930, Joel Oppenheimer was a student of Charles Olson's at Black Mountain College from 1950-1953. He published over a dozen books of poetry, a play, a book on baseball, and was a columnist for the Village Voice from 1968 to 1984. Oppenheimer was the first director of the St. Mark's Poetry Project in Greenwich Village (from 1966 to 1968) and was an active teacher of poetry throughout his life. He died of complications from cancer in 1988. The collection contains only a small amount of Oppenheimer's writing and correspondence prior to his time at Black Mountain College. The Black Mountain period itself is also represented somewhat poorly, although there are a few items of ephemera. The content of the collection becomes more comprehensive in the late 1950s and into the 1960s, with a substantial number of poetry manuscripts and a wider range of correspondence. While most of Oppenheimer's published poems are represented in the collection, it is often difficult to discern between first drafts and later copies.

Children's illustrator residing in Woodmere, N.Y., has illustrated over 300 books.

Archives & Special Collections, located at the Thomas J. Dodd Research Center, was created by the merger of Special Collections and Historical Manuscripts and Archives in 1995. The new area moved into the Thomas J. Dodd Research Center upon its opening. President William Clinton officiated at the dedication of the Center and kicked off the "Dodd Year", a year long series of lectures, exhibitions and events. Although the Center houses several entities, the vast majority of the information in the collection pertains to Archives & Special Collections.

The Nirenstein National Realty Map Company of Springfield, Massachusetts, produced high quality atlases of urban and suburban businesses and shopping centers. Nathan Nirenstein founded the company in 1925.

The collection consists of a switchyard layout diagram, published materials, photographs, and a signalman's hand lamp belonging to New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad signal superintendent Clinton C. Hurlbut, who worked for the railroad from 1912 to 1961.

The principal members of the Hoffman family present in the collection are John and Florence Hoffman; Abbie, Jack, and Phyllis, their children; Rose Shanberg, Florence's sister; and Anita Hoffman, Abbie's second wife. Other family members that appear in the collection include Joan Hoffman, Jack's wife; Sheila, Andrew, and Ilya "Amy" Hoffman, Abbie's first wife and children; america, Abbie and Anita's son; and Johanna Lawrenson, Abbie's common-law wife.
