Collections

The papers consist of correspondence, a diary, memoranda, and printed material largely relating to Gordon Auchincloss's position as assistant counselor in the State Department, 1917, and to his position as secretary to Colonel E. M. House at the armistice negotiations and the Paris Peace Conference, with some material on personal affairs. The diary lists his daily activities between 1914 and 1920, including many summaries of conversations, and with a retrospective entry on his first meeting with Colonel House in 1909. The subject files include memoranda and printed matter on the Peace Conference, American foreign policy and other political matters.

The records consist of correspondence, reports, schedules, printed material and audio cassettes documenting the Gordon Grand Fellowship at Yale University.

The collection consists of three photograph albums: photographs of game animals taken in South Africa and/or Namibia, 1900; souvenir album of the Otavi Mining Expedition, German S.W. Africa, 1901; and photographs of Namaqualand, Cape Province, South Africa, 1905.

The Gordy Collection of Circus Photographs featured a wide array of images from mostly the 1900s to the 1940s, documenting circus life. It focuses primarily on the Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus, and shows not only animal and human performers, but features behind the scenes images that give a greater view into what life was like for those who traveled with the group every year.

The Gorham Fuller papers consists of documents (and copies) from 1794 to 1861, including seven deeds for land transfers in East Windsor, Wilbraham, MA; two commissions as sargeant in 1813 and 1815 in East Windsor; a petition letter from Gorham Fuller dated 1832 to East Windsor selectmen requesting a new highway; and probate will of Gorham Fuller dated 1861 in Ellington, CT.

Social Credit has been an economic theory, a social philosophy, an ideology, and a political party in England, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the United States since it was first advanced in 1920 by Major C. H. Douglas. He believed finance capitalism deprived individuals of sufficient purchasing power to buy otherwise available products. To overcome this Douglas proposed offering to every citizen dividend payments based on the community's real wealth. As monetary reform and as social theory Social Credit attracted intellectual support in England and the United States especially during the 1930s. Gorham Munson (Wesleyan class of 1917) was the most eloquent and durable Social Credit leader in the United States. In 1932, he became American correspondent for The New English Weekly, defended Social Credit in The Nation and helped form a key Social Credit organization, the New Economics Group of New York. In 1933 he initiated a vital Social Credit journal of the arts and public affairs, New Democracy, and was its chief editor during its three-year life.
