This book contains the first draft of the second section of "Three Relations," which appeared in Erika.

This book contains drafts of sections of what became "Losing Season," a poem which appeared inCincinnati Review and was then abbreviated for The Rope (2003). The back inside cover also contains a poem titled, "The Device."

This book contains the first drafts of approximately 15 to 20 poems, including "Hot Battle Cold Shower Custer," "The Keeping," "The Bear," "The American Civil War," "The Animal," "General Sherman to Libbie," "Custer Declines to Sit for a Marble Bust," and "Letter from the Black Hills."

Volume I contains "Jewish Doctors, Berlin Story, 1938" and "Mutilation, 1934," both of which appear in Shoah Train: Poems. The untitled poem on pp. 146-147 remains unpublished. Volume II contains, among others, drafts of "Decrees," "Track," "Star Song," and "Schnapps," all of which appear in Shoah Train.
