The route provides access, directly or en-route, to many of the regional parks in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. Locations depicted in the photographs are arranged sequentially from west to east. Identified communities include Beverly Glen, Calabasas Highlands, and Universal City, as well as a view above the Hollywood Bowl. Images of canyons or their vicinity include Laurel Canyon, Fryman Canyon, and Runyon Canyon. Images of reservoirs include Encino Reservoir, Stone Canyon Reservoir, and Hollywood Reservoir. Many of the photographs show the scenic road near or at intersections with other roads.
