Papers of the Goodyear family of Connecticut of whom the principal figures are Edward Bassett Goodyear of Naugatuck, Ellsworth D. S. Goodyear, a Civil War general, and Watson Andrews Goodyear, a geologist.The papers of Edward B. Goodyear contain extensive family correspondence including forty-three letters written between 1855 and 1872 by his mother, Esther M. Bassett Goodyear. His papers also contain autobiographical notes and financial documents. Ellsworth D.S. Goodyear, who was a Civil War general is represented by diaries, including one (1863-1865) in the Civil War period and reminiscences. There is also a diary kept by F. Wilbur Goodyear while he was imprisoned in Andersonville. The papers of Watson Andrews Goodyear contain geological reports on various sites in the West (1865-1873) and an account of a series of earthquakes in El Salvador (1879-1880).

The papers contain correspondence, financial and legal records, genealogical material, account books, maps, autograph albums, scrapbooks, ships' logs, and memorabilia from several generations of the Hooker family of Farmington, Connecticut. Early family records contain correspondence and documents relating to the American Revolution. Eighteenth-century legal and financial records in the papers include deeds and leases on land in Farmington, Connecticut; indentures (1760-1763); wills; and inventories of estates. One of the major figures in the papers is Edward Hooker (1822-1903), commander in the United States Navy. Two volumes document his command of the Potomac Flotilla (1863) and of the U.S.S. Commodore (1864-1865), both during the Civil War. Maps and charts collected by Edward Hooker relate to the Civil War and eight are connected with his command of the U.S.S. Idaho during its voyage around the world (1867-1868).

The correspondence of William Livingston (1723-1790) and Noah Welles (1718-1776) is also arranged in the papers. In addition to extensive correspondence between Johnson family members, the papers contain material relating to Connecticut and New York politics in the colonial and Revolutionary War periods, and religion, land development, and Indian affairs in the nineteenth century. Also included are correspondence, largely on church matters, other church papers, a notebook kept by Forward while at Yale College (1752-1753), and nine diaries (1759-1814) mostly with brief entries. There is one description of the military developments in the French-Indian War for the month of July, 1759. Of particular interest in the correspondence is an exchange with Dr. Martin Phelps, later excommunicated from the church, on the question of communion.

The major groups of papers are those of Christopher Leffingwell (1734-1810), a merchant in Norwich and William Leffingwell (1765-1834), a stockbroker in New York and later a resident of New Haven. These groups contain papers on legal, financial and business transactions. Family correspondence during the Revolutionary War describes civilian life and medical treatment of the period. National politics are discussed all through the nineteenth century. Also of interest are travel diaries kept by Caroline Augusta Foote in Savannah in 1834 and by Frederica Russell Street during a grand tour of Europe, 1843-1847.
