Biographical / Historical

WXCI (91.7 FM) is a student radio station broadcasting at 3,000 watts with a stereo transmitter. Studios are located at WCSU's Midtown Campus and the transmitter is located at the Westside campus. It also streams its broadcasts on the Web. The radio station obtained its FCC license to operate on 28 February 1973. Student Rob Abbett nickname Rabbett was the first DJ to broadcast at 10 Watts of power. Prior to the formation of WXCI, a student club operated an AM carrier current system in dorms and campus buildings under the call letters: WCST. WCST was launched by Bob Wilson in 1968. WXCI was, as of 2008, the second largest college radio station in CT at 3000 watts. The station is primarily funded through student activity fees but also derives support from the WCSU Alumni Association and grants. WXCI was an early platform for alternative music in the 1980s.
