Biographical / Historical

Abubaker Saad was born in Libya and as a young man followed Moammar Gadhafi who rose to power in Libya in a bloodless coup in 1969. He worked with Gadhafi as a diplomat and and interpreter. At one point in Gadhafi's service, Saad was translating Gadhafi's words into Italian for a dignitary, and endurred his wrath because he had not translated a "cuss word" into the communication. By 1976, Saad decided that he was finished hoping that Gadhafi would be a positive force for Libya and participated in an aborted coup attempt. Afterwards, Saad fled Libya to the U.S., and enrolled at Portland State University in Oregon, receiving a master's degree and then a PhD from University of Washington in history. His dissertation (part of the Haas Library's collection) is on the History of Iraq in the years just preceding the Shah.

Dr. Saad joined the history faculty at WCSU in 1996 and became an integral voice in the department.

Dr. Saad passed away in 2020.
