Biographical / Historical
Hudiakoff was born in Trubchevsk, a small town in western Russia.
The youngest child in a large peasant and worker's family, Andrei was a child when he reportedly found an old tin can with some white oil paint in it which he used to make different colors using brick dust, laundry blueing, stove soot in order to paint his first picture. The child artist attracted the attention of a Russian nobleman who sent
him to art school in Moscow. He was earning his way through the Moscow School of Fine Arts when the Revolution broke out, and he left Russia.
After a long series of adventures, he became a designer of scenery and costumes in Berlin, and in the early twenties, a Broadway producer, Morris Gest, brought him to the United States. Upon moving to the U.S., Houdiakoff married an American, Doris Geile, and established his home in New York.
Hudiakoff continued his theater work, and designed and painted innumerable murals. For a year he attended the National Academy of Design in New York and won a silver medal for life studies.
He and his wife established themselves in Newtown, CT and became patrons of the Booth Library. Hudiakoff's work was at times exhibited at the Booth Library in Newtown.
