Samuel Mather Mansfield of the 24th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry was the son of Major General Joseph Mansfield (kia at Antietam) from Middletown, CT. The 24th saw action at Port Hudson and the Red River Campaign. This testimonial letter is in support of Frederick E. Camp, who had been a lieutenant in the 24th CT. Camp went on to command the 29th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry - one of CT's Black regiments in the Civil War.
