Topics discussed : (side A): Background; birth name Mary Martha Stacel; went by Stacy after being called that as a camp consoler; married to Dr. John Wahl; taught in the math department from 1959; 1986; was forced to retire in 1986 because of CT law requiring those who reach 70 must retire; taught entirely in Higgins Hall, but had office at Westside later; Class size; varied: low as 6 and as many as 65; the 65 was a grad class that was eventually split in half; Office at Higgins Hall; referred to as "Blackhole of Calcutta"; it was always hot because of the heating pipes; tunnel connecting Fairfield to Higgins concerned her because of safety; The Echo; her niece was an editor for it; not as many wrote for it then as they do now; Teaching style; hands on approach; created models for students to use to better understand the problems; was taught this at the University of Iowa by Dr. Ruth Lane; Money from the State of CT; Old library in Old Main; thought woodwork was beautiful; promoted learning; Dr. Haas; Faculty/Administration relationship; beginning they usually all sat together; later usually sat according to title; student relationships w/ faculty probably better in other departments; remembers only one student coming to her to talk for a personal matter; Her book; wrote history of her family; contains photographs of 6 generations; contains her 1949 teaching contract in which it states she can be terminated if she gets married; Campus streaking; Campus crime; Teaching philosophy; hands on person; Honors; University of Iowa asked for her materials for the archives; gave them to them, but asked for it to be dedicated to Dr. Ruth Lane; Students relating to faculty; students decided to take it upon themselves to evaluate the faculty; they published it w/ all the names; she took a look and saw Dr. Janick's name on top; Teaching at WestConn; began as an "extension teacher" (adjunct); taught modern math basics; Retirement; tells everyone they kicked her out
