Topics discussed : (side A): Beginning at WestConn; 1968, during the height of Vietnam; part of the English Department then; later CTA became own department; Haas Library; was not here yet when he arrived; White Hall; still being renovated at time he arrived; WestConn and late 1960s; FBI came around to take pictures of students activities; WestConn just changed name to Western CT State College; favored students attitudes in this era (probably due to his young age); "Nature of Man" program; required course; eventually phased out; Dr. Haas; supported the theater arts as did Dr Gertrude Braun; 1st major production; occurred his first year in 1968; had a small cast; Sports; basketball was a good program when he got here; baseball was fairly good; football came later on in the 1970s; hard to recruit players to come here in the beginning; Clubs; Echo, WXCI, PAC were all here; WXCI started in a closet in the student union; Westside campus; purchase of the land same time he came; Ives Center first thing on that campus; politics played role in delay; WestConn changes; Higgins annex; parking better when fewer students/faculty were here; library in Old Main when he began; Student Union was fairly new; Dorms/housing; men lived off campus back then, only women lived on campus; Women's sports; University presidents; worked under Dr. Haas, Dr. Bersi, Dr, Feldman; left as Dr. Roach was coming in (side B): Faculty; more men than women over the years; most departments, w/ exception of English department, are like that; few minority faculty members over the years; Background; married w/ two sons (one is a teacher, other a student at UConn); played 3 sports in college; studied for his Ph. D at NYU; coached both high school basketball and baseball; has worked professionally as an actor doing small roles on the theater, TV and in the movies; Retirement; loves teaching, but loves retirement more
