Topics discussed : (side A): Background; came to WestConn in 1960s; came from Greenwich High School; taught several sports in high school and got job because of it; Campus in 1960s; only three buildings and called Danbury State College; Administration; got along w/ administration well for most part; one president he didn't get along well with; Student Body/Athletics; been fantastic; push of athletics brought in students not college ready; Position(s) at WestConn; didn't recruit himself; did go to Danbury high school and told them about WestConn; primary responsibility was to promote WestConn; Coaches at WestConn; only Jody Racjula and Bob Campbell have tenure; History of the P.E. program; it was required 4 credits when he first came; students had to take: Intro to Physical Education, a team sport, an individual sport, and something else they wanted to learn; its gotten better w/ the various options available; P.E. classes should be pass/fail and not graded; Hostility on campus (then and now); angry students years back; now very quiet; feels important to have people w/ different viewpoints; Presidents of WestConn; Dr. Roach is a great president; faculty has had better relationship w/ Dr. Roach than w/ Dr. Feldman; Change in students; some students seem to not care; smaller campus in past lead to more academic minded students; everybody should leave college w/ more skills than they had coming in; O'Neill Center; only problem is it is run by outside group; Student Advocates; Father Bob and Ray McGhee; both have been great to student needs; Dr. Al Thomas; baseball coach and taught P.E. education; going to be honored; died from prostate cancer; Faculty relationships; never had problems; kind of stayed to himself; Progression of his job; denied promotion after 10 years on the job; Problems w/ Steven Feldman; he denied promotion of Hines, but after meeting w/ him he got it next year; told Hines he would never be promoted to full professor because no doctorate, but school later did anyway; Love of students; Salaries; took $2,000 loss to come to WestConn from Greenwich High School; did other work to compensate loss; WestConn benefits to Danbury; many have gone on to become judges, mayors, etc.; University status; occurred in 1983; most of it was political; most students/faculty didn't really care; Side jobs; Recreations program; Ray McGhee runs it; past hired people to be recreation leader, like football coaches; Development of WestConn; Rumors of retirement standards change; five year incentive; Improvement of athletic facilities; weight room (on both campuses); weight room in past was awful and only benefited football players; Retirement; got 12 semester hours to teach while retired; Feelings about WestConn
