General note
Portrait appears to be oil paint on canvass. The canvass is mounted in a wooden frame with gold painted highlights. The boy pictured is wearing a sailor's cap which has on its band "Bridgeport." The USS Bridgeport was a German built ship that was seized by the US Navy in 1917 and used as a destroyer in World War I. On the reverse side of the canvass "Richard" is written in pencil in large letters.
