The papers include correspondence, reports and minutes, printed material, and financial material. They constitute the official archive of the organization from its formation in 1967. The papers contain information about the local Christian ministries' programs of various colleges and universities in New England and document issues that were of concern to college students during the turbulent late 1960s and 1970s. These papers fit into a line of documentation at YDSL of religious work among college and university students, including the archives of the YMCA-Student Division, Student Christian Movement in New England, New England Commission for United Ministries in Higher Education, National Campus Ministry Association, and United Ministries in Higher Education. The University Christian Movement in New England is a non-denominational campus ministry organization formed in 1967 to continue the work of the Student Christian Movement in New England. The Student Christian Movement was formed in 1934 by the YMCA, YWCA, and various Protestant denominations to promote cooperative religious work among college and university students.

This addendum to the main collection of the University Christian Movement in New England Records (see Record Group 88) contains all the remaining material belonging to the organization that was not submitted to Yale University in 1998. This collection, composed of historical documents, correspondence, reports, minutes of meetings, printed material, financial invoices, photographs, slides, an audio tape, as well as other artifacts, spans the entire history of the organization. It provides insight into college campus ministry in New England at the turn of the 20th century, and in the years between the two World Wars. This small added collection also fills in many of the details of the former collection that dealt with the turbulent 1960s and 1970s, and expands its coverage of the UCMNE through the more placid 1980s and 1990s until the organization's dissolution. The University Christian Movement in New England was a non-denominational inclusive campus ministry organization headquartered for the most part in Cambridge, MA. Officially formed anew with a name change in 1967, it was a continuation of the Student Christian Movement in New England, which had been formed by the YWCA, YMCA, and various other groups as an umbrella organization to promote religious co-operation on the campuses of the six states of New England.

The University Christian Movement was an ecumenical student Christian organization in the USA that existed between the years 1966-1969. The UCM was the successor to the National Student Christian Federation. It was the U.S.A. member of the World Student Christian Federation and a related movement of the National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA. UCM sought to be a student movement that would unite the academic community through social action. The organization dissolved in 1969 due to a lack of program direction and an inability to define itself.

Correspondence, writings, and collected material document the life and work of Arthur Paul Wakefield and family, including information regarding medical work in China and interactions with Chinese colleagues, among them Francis C. M. Wei. Arthur Paul Wakefield was a medical missionary serving in China under the Disciples of Christ and Episcopal mission agencies from 1905 to 1927. He served at Luchowfu Hospital in Anhui (Anhwei) province from 1912 to 1919 and at Boone College, Central ChristianUniversity in Wuchang from 1919 to 1927. Following his return from China, Wakefield was involved in public health and tuberculosis treatment in Maine and Massachusetts.

Correspondence, writings, diaries, and photographs document Heinrichs career with the YMCA and his service with the U.S. Air Force. Letters and diaries of Waldo Heinrichs' sister Margaret shed additional light on the period of time that the Heinrichs spent in India 1930-1931. Waldo Heinrichs served as a YMCA secretary in Hawaii, India, and Jerusalem. from 1913 to 1934. He then became Professor of Contemporary Civilization at Middlebury College. He was a pilot for the U.S. Air Force during World War I, and a Combat Intelligence Officer during World War II.

Detailed correspondence and reports document American missionary work in the Philippines and Taiwan. Walter and Margaret Tong were missionaries serving under the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions in Davao, Mindanao, Philippine Islands from 1931 to 1947. Following World War II Walter served as Candidate Secretary of the ABCFM and later they worked with Church World Service in Taiwan.

Letters, writings, and photographs document the life and work of Walter Taylor as an Episcopal missionary architect based in Wuhan, Central China from 1923 to 1927. Taylor's long distance courtship of his future wife Ruth Marie Smith, her eventual voyage to China to marry him in 1926, and their life in China during a politically turbulent time are well documented.

The records document the effect of war time emergency measures on student religious work on college and university campuses throughout the United States during the years 1942 to 1944. The War Emergency Council on Student Christian Work was established in 1942 to deal with the readjustments made necessary by the impact of World War II on college and university campuses. The Council collected and disseminated information, arranged regional consultative conferences, and worked as an intermediary between the United States military establishment and student religious movements.

Publications, correspondence, reports, statements, and collected material document the work of the Washington Office on Africa and the issues addressed by its work. The Washington Office on Africa was founded in 1972 to support the movement for freedom from white-minority rule in southern Africa. Its activities have included the monitoring of Congressional legislation and executive policies and actions, as well as the publication of action alerts and other documentation designed to advance progressive legislation and policy on southern Africa. Supported by church bodies and unions, the WOA has worked in partnership with colleagues in Africa, the Africa advocacy community in the United States, and grassroots organizations concerned with various aspects of African affairs.
