These papers relate primarily to the life and work of Henry Knox Sherrill and his son Henry Williams Sherrill. The papers document Henry Knox Sherrill's career as an Episcopal rector, Bishop of Massachusetts, and Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, his wartime chaplaincy work (in France during World War I and as Chairman of the United States General Commission on Chaplains during World War II), his ecumenical leadership as President of the National Council of Churches and the World Council of Churches, and his service to institutions such as Yale University and Massachusetts General Hospital. Henry Williams Sherrill was a graduate of Yale College, Union Theological Seminary and Virginia Theological Seminary. He was an Episcopal priest who served parishes in Michigan and Ohio and for many years was chairman of the Cheswick Center, a research and education trust for study and improvement in nonprofit governance.

This record group includes pamphlets, reports, and ephemera that were part of the library of the Himalayan Archives Association, a group was formed to coordinate care for the archives of four organizations that had been deposited at the University of Edinburgh in the early 1990s.The Himalayan Mission Archive Collection at the Yale Divinity School Library was formed in 2008 when the archives of the four organizations and their umbrella association were transferred to Yale from the Centre for the Study of World Christianity at the University of Edinburgh.

The collection includes five diaries containing valuable biographical information and documenting Bushnell's trip abroad, 1845-1846, and manuscript sermons, 1832-1875, which give insight into the less formal aspects of Bushnell's thought. The material written about Bushnell during his lifetime pertains to the controversy associated with his theological beliefs. Horace Bushnell was born in Bantam, Connecticut on April 14, 1802. He was educated at Yale (B.A., 1827; M.A., 1830; B.D., 1833), and received degrees from Wesleyan University, Harvard, and Yale. He served as pastor of North Church, Hartford, CT from 1833-1859. He was the author ofGod in Christ (1849) and Christ in Theology (1851), as well as other works uncongenial to the orthodox theology of his times.

The papers supplement and provide supporting detail for the major collection of Waller papers located at Rhodes House Library in Oxford, England. These papers document the Zambezi expedition of David Livingstone (1813-1873) and the early history of the Universities' Mission to Central Africa. Waller's friendship with Livingstone is apparent in their correspondence. Waller's deep interest in Africa and the problem of slavery continued throughout his life and is reflected in the diaries dated 1875-1876 during his rectorate at Twywell. Horace Waller was born in London in 1833. He went to Africa in 1861 as Lay Superintendent of the Universities' Mission to Central Africa. He resigned from the Mission in 1863 following a disagreement related to liberated slaves under the care of the Mission. In 1864, Waller returned to England. He became a member of the committee of the Anti-Slavery Society. He edited David Livingstone's journals for publication. He served as rector of Twywell, Thrapston, Northamptonshire from 1874 to 1895. Horace Waller died at East Liss, Hampshire in 1896.

The Olsons were Lutheran missionaries and educators in Tanzania from 1946 to 1988. This collection documents the work of Southern Presbyterian missionaries Waddy Hampton Hudson, his wife Maude Chapin Hudson, and their son George A. Hudson, primarily in Jiaxing (Kashing), Zhejiang Province, China from 1894 to 1940. Waddy Hudson was in charge of mission accounts, trained ministers, and preached in neighboring villages, traveling from Jiaxing (Kashing) in a house boat. George Hudson worked initially in Jiaxing (Kashing) and then in Taiwan following World War II, including a tent evangelism ministry.
