Born and raised in Portland, Maine, Richard Hamilton became involved in World War II following the infamous bombing of Pearl Harbor. He enlisted in the Navy before he could be drafted into the army, but was originally denied by the former due to a defective nose. He then served the army in the 27th infantry of the 25th Division as a Medic. He received training at Camp Polk, Louisiana.
